20.01.2022 When we create a picture or pattern, we are using the right side of the brain - this taps into intuition and the qualities of problem solving, resourcesfulness, good communication and relationship building. We may think that doodling, even drawing and painting is simply the realm of artists; that the aim is just to do pretty pictures, but now more than ever before it is important to harmonise our brain hemispheres and even go further, looking at the heart/brain connection to find what we truly want in life. It all begins with moments of joy, such as when we create!

17.01.2022 The process of creating, doing art, whether painting, drawing or sculpture - is a journey to knowing yourself. If you set yourself creative challenge e.g. draw or paint something different like figures if you are used to doing only landscapes; then what you will learn about yourself throughout that challenge is pure growth. Art taps into our intuition - the process of creating takes us away from the head and allows us to work from the heart. It allows us to feel joy, pure ...joy and the truth about art is that it is the process of doing art which is the most important. Being attached to the outcome keeps us locked in head space. Instead of being in present time, simply enjoying the moment, from which springs the highest state of wellbeing, we are locked in future or past time. Sometimes I will simply paint wonderful colour. Yesterday I painted a series of small canvases - only the background colour. I don't know what I will paint on them yet; but just the process of painting 12 small canvases, each with a buttery gelato colour basecoat; some deep peach; others a vibrant lemon-lime; and some a clear blue - has given rise to a whole range of ideas on what may go on them. Let me know your idea! So when you have a chance; pick up a brush, mixup a colour that you are drawn to - and just paint shapes or paint a bascoat - ideas will soon flow! See more

13.01.2022 When it comes to creative fulfillment; its all a matter of trust. When we have the chance to do some art; we must do it for the joy of it; being unattached to... the outcome. When we become focused on the enjoyment of the process - using different colours; experimenting with different and expressive lines; different brushes - we then find that we are painting from our heart - from the right brain, the intuitive brain. I love to do painting with my 2 year old granddaughter - and become absorbed in the beauty of her joy at expressing herself - splashing paint over the page; different colours and little giggles of joy at the colourful page she creates. Art, like life, isn't about the destination; its not about what we have achieved, or accummulated, or have built up - its about how we responded to the journey; how we take those forward steps and how we either enjoy the view on the way or dismiss it in the focused obsession with the outcome. The mindfulness; the awareness of the journey, each step of the way, is what builds our character; heals our heart; and builds our joy of life! If you see a freshly bloomed flower; can you take one second to pause and admire; or feel gratitude by another's smile or cheery greeting to you! These are the pearls, the moments which string together to form a life well lived - achievements gained fade with time; but moments of joy; appreciating loved ones; nature etc; when captured in mindfulness - stay with us and return again and again - uplifting and moving us forward! 09.01.2022 The result of your artwork depends largely on your materials also, and the knowledge in managing/using those materials. For example, you can create emotion, movement and depth with the good use of your brush - varying brushstrokes speak volumes and serve to play as great a part in a painting as the colour and shape. Brushstrokes will add texture, lead the eye to a secondary focal point and work with the light to change the mood of the piece in different angles. However thi...s relies on your brush - and knowing the type of brush to use for which effect is as important as knowing how to put together a composition. You may wish to achieve a soft mistiness such as the mist off a waterfall - this can be achieved with a short bristled stencilling brush, a tiny amount of white or pale hued colour and a circular motion. The same effect can be achieved with a tissue or even a cotton ball in a cloth. There are no rules, no right or wrong in achieving the effect you want in your artwork, but its mostly all about the process - moreso than the result. We gain as much, if not more from the process of creating, than we do from the resulting piece. If we are going to challenge ourselves in art and do a piece which is different to what we normally paint, draw or sculpt; then much growth is achieved. We step out of our comfort zone and this takes us on a journey towards knowing ourselves. To know ourselves opens up a whole realm of wonders in our world from the balancing of relationships to the choice of a career and above all acceptance of that which we cannot change - as well as joy, gratitude and expansive increase in our current life! To create art is to use alchemy! www.girleart.com See more

08.01.2022 The art of creating - not as complicated or mysterious as you might think. To tap into your creative "right brain", all you need to do is start drawing; even doodling on paper without a fixed result in mind, will do it. Any creative activity will stimulate our intuitive, artistic side and the more we do this the better we sill become at doing art we love; as well as being more relaxed and in-tune in every area of our lives! Try it - if you have even 5 minutes, simply start drawing, doodling, sketching as if no-one is going to see it, and the focus isnt on the result, the action of drawing is what will stimulate your creative flow!

07.01.2022 When it comes to creating art, it's all about what you feel while you are doing it. If you want to capture happiness and joy in your work, then its so important that you feel this while you are drawing/painting the artpiece. In my lessons, I inspire students to first attain the feeling of what they wish to capture - if its a roaring ocean, then use the senses ; hear the thundering waves; smell the pungent seaside aroma; feel the ocean breeze on your face - really work the imagination. The stronger the image in your mind; the closer you will get to transferring that feeling to your artwork. After all, art is about emotion. What do you wish to convey in your artwork? When you look at a piece you have done, do you want the vibrant energy and emotion to take you back to that joyful, happy or peaceful feeling?

06.01.2022 Do you doubt your ability in your artistic endeavour? This is so common for those who are in the process of practicing their creativity; or finding out what part of creating they like. Artists mostly excell in one area or two areas moreso than the others e.g. you may love colour, mixing colour and using unusual colours in order to get the effect you want. You may like doing line, therefore excell at drawing but when it comes to painting, you feel you will ruin it. You ma...y stay away from figure drawing, or even drawing, thinking that you don't have the ability to do it. Like everything we do; it is understanding it, and doing it without fear that will give us the greatest benefit. A blank page or canvas is just that, a blank space for you to express your creativity on. Whatever you put on it is purely an expression of you thoughts at that moment. It isn't meant to be a judgement on your life. The aim is to enjoy the process of creating. If you do a page of squiggly lines and enjoyed the process, the childlike abandonment of doing it, and the mindfulness of being in the present; the clarity of seeing the pencil turn over the page, doing thick and thin lines, jagged or curved lines, long straight lines, or wavy lines that trail off the page - then right there, you are an artist, for to be a true artist you must be in present moment, enjoying the process of doing art and being unattached to the outcome. Art carries the energy of the emotion with which it was created. If an artist expressed sheer joy or pure sadness while creating the piece, that is carried forth and expressed to the viewer over limitless timelines. An exercise which helps you to express your emotions through your art is below: Write a list of emotions - Joy, sadness, happiness, anger etc; then choose a colour which represents the emotion to you and paint or draw whatever shape and line comes into your head representing the emotion. It choice must be made fast which gives the analytical mind no time to think about doing a correct drawing or painting etc.....do the first line that comes into your head. Let me know how you go and watch this page for further exercises. See more
