21.01.2022 "Its about identity, about belonging." Today marks 26 years since Australian South Sea Islanders were officially recognised by the Commonwealth. The Australi...an South Sea Islander United Council held a special morning tea in Rockhampton where elders and community members gathered to mark the anniversary. Both sides of Aunty Ros Wallaces family were taken from their homes and brought to Australia during the blackbirding era. "For years we grew up not thinking that we did belong here, even though I was born here," she said. "I remember the emotion. I felt good for me and my generation and the generations to come but I really felt sadness for my parents, those that have gone before, that never got this. "Most of my early years, we had to tick the other box when it came to identifying who we were. We didnt identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait or any other, so it was always the other box. "Now weve got a box we can tick."

20.01.2022 Spur of the moment times... At North Rockhampton Cemetery today with Harbins, Warkills & Vea Veas Locating unmarked South Sea Islander graves & placing crosses here with their details The stories we learnt, shared & gathered here today about our ancestors were sad, happy & funny And today our generations should not stop sharing their families stories ... These times are so good for your soul... to be a part of their history, our today & for our generations after us Its important to be one who listens, shares & gathers their stories whenever the opportunity arises It turned out to be an even relaxing time...no need at all to be scared sitting in a cemetery amongst our warriors Any family is welcome to join us next time. 20.01.2022 From the President Kerry and Family! Thank you to all organisers and everyone who participated in this beautiful project Lovely to see and to read and discuss... our past history ! This sculpture honouring the history between Australian South Sea Islanders (ASSI), the Mununjali community and Veresdale landholders . The six metre high two-tonne sculpture was hand-crafted from a fallen 200 year-old iron bark log, that was found at Mt Lindesay, by artist Kakae Pakoa who lovingly worked on the project for three Mr Pakoa said his design reflected the past, the present and the future of the area. The footprints symbolise the walk the South Sea Islanders did from Redbank Plains to Beaudesert in 1863, when it took them two days to get here to start work, he said. They also symbolise the future-moving forward and moving together. Kakaes wife Natalie said the unveiling of the sculpture reinforced the love and healing she felt after her communitys history with the area was accepted and acknowledged by the Mununjali people.

13.01.2022 To our members and community I would like to take this time to reflect on our year up till now, the year has seen us go through a change in the way live due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic has had a major effect our economy and employment worldwide. In saying that I would to take the opportunity to congratulate our ancestral country Vanuatu on their 40 years of Independence. ... This country was once voted the most happiest country in the world and all the photos posted on Facebook show the enjoyment and vibrant souls of the people. I would like applaud the spirit of the people in the way they celebrated in this difficult time as loss of tourism would be effecting them economically. So congratulations to all our families and the people of Vanuatu in 40 years of Independence I would also like to invite members and community to help us celebrate this wonderful achievement President Kerry Warkill

07.01.2022 President’s Report This year will always be remembered for how our way of living changed. With the development of COVID-19 it really put restrictions on how we as a country, state and communities operated and existed in our daily way of life. When restrictions were introduced earlier in the year, it placed a burden on our community and organisation but through the vision and effort of some of our hard working committee and members I believe ASSIUC as an organisation has devel...oped into a new business and will continue to develop in the future. The development of the organisation’s website is the big one and it will be a vital part on how we operate in the future, although we are still in the early stages, but hopefully the future looks promising and we can build great partnerships with community organisations, local, state and federal governments and build links with communities worldwide. Through all this we were still able to celebrate, and some important events we held were our Flag Raising, Elders Morning Tea and a film night with Sugar Slaves. Our hard working secretary with the help of our footy double sellers kept our fundraising efforts going and kept us going forward financially. I would also like to applaud the efforts of our KPC Sub-Committee for their effort and determination throughout the year. So the year was not good for socialising but we as the ASSIUC committee and you our members should be proud of our efforts for the year. With that all said I would like to say Merry Christmas to all committee, members and all Australian South Sea Island communities and organisations and may you all have a prosperous New Year for 2021.

01.01.2022 RANDOM FB PIC OF THE DAY Thank you to Sophia Yasso for sharing what she has been studying in the good ole WORD ... GOD ISN’T AN EDITOR, HE’S A CREATOR. HE’S NOT LOOKING FOR TYPOS IN OUR LIVES. HE’S LOOKING FOR THE BEAUTY IN THEM. He’s pointing toward the horizon with a gleam in His eye and asking us to lift our eyes up toward a better story. He wants to tell a story of redemption. Of everyone He could use to tell it, He’s made you one of the main characters. He wants you to keep your eyes on Him. If there’s a typo or two on a couple of pages of your life, don’t obsess over it. Keep writing. God’s got this. He’ll help you make the changes you need to make, but His purpose for your life is much bigger than giving you a failing grade. Thank you lord for the life you've given me
