19.01.2022 Did you know ABF officers protect more than just Australia’s best interests at the border? Late last year, four ancient Mexican artefacts imported through Sydney and Melbourne caught the attention of ABF Trade Compliance officers, who requested they be held. The ABF alerted the Office for the Arts, which in turn undertook an investigation under the Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Act 1986. The objects date from the Mesoamerican Classic Period, from 800 BC to 500 AD. T...urns out they were exported from Mexico in contravention of Mexico’s cultural property laws. Following the Australian Government’s receipt of the Mexican Government’s restitution request under the Act, the objects were seized. This week they were handed over to the Embassy of Mexico in Canberra for return to their country of origin. http://spr.ly/6184HDQra See more
