24.01.2022 On our tour Silver Coast & Golden River: Art, Architecture & Culture of Portugal - https://www.asatours.com.au/tours/portugal/ - we visit the vast Templar Convento de Cristo at Tomar. In 1157 Gualdim Pais, Grand Master of the Templars, was awarded the site of Roman Nabantia for his services against the Muslims. He built a fortress and church there but moved to an adjacent hill and here withstood a Muslim attack in 1190. In 1314 the Templars of Portugal were transformed int...o a new Order, the Order of Christ, thus avoiding the dissolution and persecution suffered by Templars elsewhere in Europe. Tomar became the headquarters of the Order of which Henry the Navigator became Grand Master between 1417 and 1460. In the early 16th century Joo III transformed the Order into a monastic brotherhood, necessitating further construction. The huge complex today is built around six great cloisters. At its heart is the Charola, the sixteen-sided chapel of the Templars, a typical centrally-planned Templar church which, like its counterparts everywhere, is a free imitation of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The complex has a good collection of Flemish paintings and interesting tombs and fine architectural detailing. Its treasure, however, is its very famous, highly decorated central window. Please enjoy this preview of Convento de Cristo, Tomar, courtesy of Portugal Tourism:

02.01.2022 My PORTUGAL TOP 5 - Inge Pullar, Tour Manager Last year I had the privilege to be the Tour Manager on the tour Silver Coast & Golden River: Art, Architecture & Culture of Portugal. I knew l was in for a treat, visiting the country of beautiful Azulejos, fascinating history (famous explorers like Vasco da Gama instantly came to mind), the great cities of Lisbon and Porto, charming medieval villages, breathtaking countryside, lots of fresh air and blue skies, and last, but not ...least, great food and wine. I was not disappointed! At our farewell dinner, we were all talking about our highlights. I found it hard to narrow it down to just a few! After some contemplation here is my top five: 1. Visiting MUSEU NACIONAL DE ARTE ANTIGA with our tour leader Dr Maria de Lourdes Riobom, who was head curator at this excellent museum. Maria spoke with so much knowledge and passion about the collection, it truly set the tone for the rest of the tour. 2. COIMBRA: The history is tangible in this lively University town. Visiting the University and Library were a highlight, as was the Roman site at Conimbriga. To top it off we ended the day staying at the elegant Hotel Quinta das Lgrimas. 3. PALACIO NACIONAL, SINTRA: Once the summer palace of the Portuguese Royal family, definite standout features here are two extraordinary conical chimneys, beautiful azulejos, exquisite ceilings and gorgeous views. 4. Staying in Medieval buildings converted to comfortable hotels: CONVENTO DE SAO PAULO in Redondo, POUSADA DO MARVAO and POUSADA MOSTEIRO GUIMARAES are all marvellous in their own right. The rooms are very comfortable, however exploring the buildings and surrounds make staying here a highlight. These hotels also have an abundance of nice spaces to sit and enjoy the views, have a chat, or to read a good book, making it easy to relax after busy days. 5. Driving through the DOURO VALLEY and wine tasting. The views of the Douro while driving to the winery were just breathtaking. The wines of the Douro Valley are world class and the hospitality superb. Are you inspired to explore beautiful Portugal? Maria and I would love you to join us this September! For a full itinerary please visit: https://www.asatours.com.au/tours/portugal/
