25.01.2022 "Mommy, there's a virus coming!!!" My KIDS came home this week from school scared. I feel sad that they are scared. What did I tell them? "Yes, there is a... virus, but we have very strong bodies. We're going to eat foods that will help our bodies fight off viruses, and it will be okay." Fear = stress = decreased immune system function Let's not spread this fear & stress to our little ones Instead of worrying, let's make sure we are serving the nutrients needed for strong immune systems. There are a bunch of important nutrients for the immune system. Vitamin A is one. If it's low, our immune system can't function as well. Small children are often low in Vitamin A. It's found mostly in green leafy and orange vegetables, and animal products. Here's what kids need/day: Age 1-3: 300-600 mcg Age 4-8: 400-900 mcg Age 9-13: 600-1700 mcg Why the ranges? To explain simply, there is ready-to-go Vitamin A and Vitamin A that needs to be processed by the body. Some people don't process efficiently, so they need to eat more. Animal products have ready-to-go Vitamin A, plant products have Vitamin A that needs to be processed. Focus on serving orange or leafy green vegetable every day. If kids eat it, it's usually enough to get them enough Vitamin A, especially if they also eat animal foods. If they are picky, don't eat enough, don't eat orange or green vegetables, or don't eat meat or other foods that contain Vitamin A, then a supplement can help. I always recommend using food first to get what kids need. It can be easy for kids to take too much Vitamin A in a supplement, and that can be dangerous. But if they aren't getting what they need from their diet, then a supplement is needed. One of my kids doesn't eat enough Vitamin A. For him I supplement. 21.01.2022 If you feel grumpy when you wake up, you are normal! But resist doing the next normal thing which is to immediately go for tea or coffee. Research in circadian ...biology (bodyclock) has found that the melatonin level in the body is still high for at least an hour after waking up which makes people feel grumpy, not with it, or even slightly ‘seasick’ in the morning. They also found that having coffee or tea right away makes you feel worse later on. Their view is that melatonin protects the pancreas (this is your spleen in Chinese medicine) and it’s not ready for food yet (your body considers coffee / tea and anything except water, food) so eating or drinking will harm the pancreas. They suggest no food, coffee or tea for a minimum of one hour, but ideally two hours after waking. This is exactly what I outline in Clock On To Health. Biologists don’t know why you feel worse later on if you eat or drink as soon as you wake up, but I track the sequence of organ imbalances that sets off, and how it can ultimately roll into lifestyle disease. Basically, if you miss the energy production cycle of the morning (wake up & exercise detox / stomach & breakfast / work & spleen) the day is a drag. There are so many little lifestyle changes that can make each day an adventure, a wonder and a pleasure instead. Such as: when you get up give yourself 2 hours to breathe and move, and have your coffee after breakfast, somewhere between 9am and 12pm, and you’ve initiated the health and happiness sequence. 13.01.2022 Lets talk hydration There are two areas I want to discuss; temperature and minerals. The rate of water absorption is governed by many factors including the t...emperature of the water and its mineral content. Firstly, before our stomach is able to release the water into the small intestine, the water first needs to be at body temperature. Therefore, when drinking cold water, the stomach needs to warm the water up before absorption. The second factor (perhaps the most important) is the mineral content. To effectively absorb water, we require minerals to first open the gates and bring water into the body. Without these minerals, the rate of water absorption is significantly reduced. Here are my suggestions: WARM WATER & LEMON - Start each morning with 500ml of hot water with lime or lemon. Not only will this stimulate digestion and regulate glucose metabolism but drinking hot water will hydrate your body twice as fast. COCONUT WATER - Drink a glass of coconut water after the gym. Coconut water is excellent for hydration as it contains many electrolytes and minerals. 10.01.2022 So life....#mumlife Lately I’ve been feeling extra, extremely tried. Like I’ve actually been getting some solid blocks of 5/6hrs sleep which, in mama world is fucking fantastic!!! So I had to sit and ask myself, other than dealing with a mountain of stress at home in the past fortnight, shy was I this tired?!!! Then the penny dropped ... I am anemic again! My Intuitive voice told me clearly and then I remembered........ ~ I’ve been bruising easily ~ my cycles gone to shit ~ the corners of my mouth are cracking and not healing. ~ I’m pasty pale again too These are just a few noticeable symptoms of iron deficiency. I’ve also been downing that extra shot of glorious, ohhhh so glorious cup of liquid gold But in turn, this extra energy shot actually depleted my iron stored further. 09.01.2022 What and how we eat triggers a chain reaction of organ processes that shape our body and our life. A healthy breakfast is more than a list of nutrients, it has ...to fill our stomach but also taste good to make us feel good, and we need to be at peace while we eat it. Our stomach is ‘chi central’ (the centre of all chi pathways) and if we get breakfast right a sense of wellbeing infuses our entire being before we step out the door. This builds our blood which is the foundation for health and it has a positive influence on everything that happens in the day ahead. If you can’t face (stomach) breakfast it means you haven’t initiated the detox phase necessary for nutrient assimilation - the toxins from the previous day are lingering around and don’t ‘allow’ you to eat. That’s why the chi is in the large intestine before it enters the stomach (at breakfast time) as large intestine is about letting go, it’s the detox organ. Ideally you have a minimum of two hours between getting up and eating breakfast. The ‘hunger pain’ you may experience on waking up is your toxins screaming out for attention. They don’t want food, they want elimination.
