20.01.2022 The Lorinna had a distinguised service career during World War Two. Read all about it in this week's blog post by Leah Johnson. https://www.bassstraitmaritimecentre.com.au/lorinna/

16.01.2022 An easy way to contribute to ocean health is to take public transport, walk, or ride your bike to your destination! Luckily, this Wednesday there will be an extra perk: the free Commuter Cafe breakfast. See link below to book your place.

15.01.2022 A reminder that we are currently open on weekends only - Saturdays and Sundays 10am - 3pm. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions and staffing, we are unable to offer the Simulator experience at this time. The Simulator of the steamship Woniora is CLOSED.

14.01.2022 Today we continue with the wonderful Richmond Collection which is made up of beautiful, wonderful, strange, and head-scratching pieces of local printed ephemera from businesses, clubs, events, sports, and people. This month will be a focus on the Mersey Marine Board part of the Richmond Collection. This week is a set of instructions for entering into the port of Devonport. The back of the second page had a date on it but it has been cropped and the date on page 2 has been redacted: can you figure out when this might have been according to the clues within? #localhistory #devonporttas #merseyriver

12.01.2022 POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE OF THE STRAIT Who remembers Ovalteenies? From 1943 until 1991, all Ovaltine products sold in Australia were made in the factory in Devonport (Quoiba). The opening of the factory during wartime was hailed as a great achievement. They first turned their attention to dehydrated vegetables to send to troops overseas and after the war focussed on delicious drinks and malted lollies. The barley, eggs, and milk that made the products were locally sourced. #localhistory #devonporttas https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/68803128

09.01.2022 Today we continue with the wonderful Richmond Collection which is made up of beautiful, strange, and head-scratching pieces of local printed ephemera from businesses, clubs, events, sports, and people. Did you or someone you know play in the 1974-1975 season? Or did you watch any of these games? #localhistory #crickettas #NWTCA

08.01.2022 POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE OF THE STRAIT We have very few wartime postcards in the collection and we've showcased three this week. Do you have any from your family? It looks like Bob and Doris may have been having a bit of a long distance fight about Bob writing to other women. We hope they made up and met up again in the end.

02.01.2022 POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE OF THE STRAIT We take a trip along the Strait to the Table Cape Lighthouse in the early 20th century. This gorgeous image includes the signal house, used to "speak" to ships at sea. We've seen several postcards to Miss Pettigrew in the collection, so while this one is not postmarked, we think it came from around 1908! #localhistory #tablecapelighthouse
