19.01.2022 Christmas is coming! Christmas is a time to celebrate, indulge and have fun with our families, our four legged friends are a part of the family and will be in on the action too, however, the festive season presents a world of hidden dangers to our pets, from toxic foods to dangerous seasonal plants. There are many different foods which can pose a problem for our pets at Christmas time. Below is a list of things to be avoided this festive season.... Chocolate. The chemical theobromine is found in chocolate and is toxic to dogs, even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures and even death. The darker the chocolate, the more potent the theobromine. Any type of chocolate should be avoided at all costs. If your dog does get into chocolate, veterinary attention should be sought. Christmas pudding / mince pies. Grapes and sultanas/raisins are toxic to dogs, even the smallest quantity can cause severe kidney failure. Christmas puddings and mince pies are packed full of dried sultanas so ensure you keep this for the humans only. Onions, garlic, leek. Whether cooked or uncooked these vegetables can cause toxicity. Initial signs are vomiting and diarrhea but the main effect is damage to the red blood cells, resulting in anemia, however, this may not be apparent until several days after ingestion. Artificial Sweeteners. A sugar-free sweetener called Xylitol is often found in the lollies we consume over Christmas, as well as in chewing gum. Xylitol is poisonous to dogs as it can induce the release of insulin in the body, this results in a low blood sugar and sometimes liver damage. Signs of poisoning can be rapid or delayed, and can include vomiting, lethargy and convulsions. Alcohol. Just like chocolate and onions, alcohol is toxic to dogs. Even small amounts of alcohol can be dangerous. Signs of intoxication can include vomiting, disorientation, restlessness, excessive panting, muscle tremors and seizures In severe cases, or if left untreated, alcohol intoxication in dogs can cause failure of the organ systems and even death. Common plants which can be toxic to our pets are Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettia, ensure these are kept out of reach of your dog or cat or they may get a bit of a tummy upset. If you do have a pet emergency over the Christmas break please contact the Animal Emergency Services at Underwood on 3483 0463. The most important thing to remember this festive season is to have fun and surround yourself with loved ones, whether they be two legged, four legged, furry, feathered or scaly!

11.01.2022 We all know that snakes love to bask in the sun, and this beautiful summer weather means that more and more snakes will be out and about trying to find that perfect spot to soak up some rays. This can potentially be problematic for our pets, particularly if they come across a venomous snake such as an Eastern Brown or Red Belly Black! Check out the link below from our friends at Animal Emergency Services to read all about snake bites, from signs and symptoms to treating a ven...omous snake bite. Keeping your back yard tidy and free from leaf litter is a good way to prevent snakes from wanting to call your place home. https://info.animalemergencyservice.com.au/a-guide-to-snake
