25.01.2022 Marine Care Ricketts Point would like to invite you to their online zoom speaker evening tomorrow Thursday Sep 10, 2020 at 19:30 Our Speaker: Mark Rodrigue is t...he State-Wide Leader for Marine and Coasts with Parks Victoria, who will be talking on the topic of "Opportunities and Challenges for Port Phillips Marine Protected Areas This presentation will provide an pictorial overview of the key values, threats and opportunities for Port Phillip Bays three Marine Sanctuaries and its Marine National Park." If you would like to join us, please click on the link below.

25.01.2022 If you have to wear a disposable mask, please dispose of them thoughtfully. We have been seeing alot of masks blowing around our streets.

25.01.2022 Thank you Virginia Marine for making us aware of this ! Third day in a row that these illegal poachers are inside and fishing within a protected marine sanctuary. At least 50 boats! If anyone sees this again, please take photos and call 133 474 and speak to the Fisheries Duty Officer letting them know the time and place, and registration numbers ion boats if you can see them. This this flagrant disregard for the law and the environment needs to stop. Please help us.... At the bare minimum there needs to be proper training of people who apply for a fisheries licence and each year they need to watch videos and sign that they understand fully and uphold the laws of this state or they will be prosecuted. It is not rocket science. We are happy to meet with Fisheries Management and the Minister about this flagrant disregard for the law and the environment. We have had enough. See more

24.01.2022 We have been waiting for this day for many years. Well done to all who have campaigned tirelessly for this result. 3 hectares of the site has been saved for everyone to enjoy. A lot of work will be needed before it is fully restored. The Friends of Highett Grassy Woodland will be allowed to access the site to see what needs to be done. Up until now access to the site has been restricted to a few site visits over the last 10 years. It is a very exciting day for us.

24.01.2022 It was our first working bee for the year at Ricketts Point Landside this afternoon. We thought for a change we would work in the Reserve Road end of the site. ...Connor (Citywide) dug out mango sized roots of Climbing Dock, Rumex sagittatus, Jill finished with a bag full of Panic Veldt-grass , Ehrharta erecta and other pesky weeds and I tackled a huge Black Nightshade plant, Solanum nigra that was as nearly as tall as I am. All in all, everything was looking good and growing well. Next time our holidaying volunteers will be back to help us. See more

23.01.2022 Wow Ian, my heart was beating fast just watching this! What a magical experience for you. Thankyou for sharing it

22.01.2022 Good morning everyone, just to clarify the boundaries of the Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary to protect our precious marine life. The Sanctuary boundary starts/ends opposite the Sea Scouts jetty, quite a distance (about 500m) from Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron. It then runs all the way to Fourth St Black Rock, just past Quiet Corner. Please call 133 474 immediately if you see any fisherman illegally fishing within these boundaries. Fisheries have asked that we please call them as the more substantiated calls they receive the more chance of additional resources to patrol the Marine Park. The water police were placed in the middle of the Sanctuary last night monitoring the situation. These illegal fisherman are mostly launching from the other side of the bay and St Kilda.

22.01.2022 Good Morning All, Just sharing the link to the Bayside City Councils local law Number 2, "Have your Say". https://yoursay.bayside.vic.gov.au/loca/new-local-law-ideas... One of the important items, which is the last item in the link and follows up from the successful banning of smoking on Bayside Beaches by Council. Is to expand this ban to also include the foreshore reserve and bushes. This will have an incredibly positive impact on the Marine life in the Bay and the Bird and Animal life on the foreshore. We have been a strong supporter of Sandringham Foreshore Association and ask if you would support the change? Have a lovely day ;)

22.01.2022 Great shot of a rather large Tiger Snake at Black Rock today captured by one of our members...early in the Season!

20.01.2022 A message from our member Sue Neale who is a landscape architect. There are a couple of other lines of argument that could be used to protect the tree. There ar...e strong arguments around habitat value and landscape character that are well outlined in the attachments. If the tree is in a park setting there are sound arguments around the benefits of the tree in contributing to opportunities for nature based play. The tree canopy and branches provide a natural pause point and gathering area for children to socialise, play and to make a critical connection with nature. There are many well documented mental health and wellbeing benefits for children and families who engage nature based play. Trees such as this one, provide a green prescription for anxiety and depression in young people. The branching structure of the tree also provides opportunities for the development of fine motor skill including balance and upper body strength through low climbing. Bayside Council is investing $10.3 million over 10 years to upgrade every playground in Bayside under its Playground Improvement Plan, to gain the same health and wellbeing benefits. The tree requires no upgrading but does require commitment and protection so that its green prescription and developmental benefits can continue to be offered to future children and families in Beaumaris. The tree has a large canopy and makes a significant contribution towards cooling the local environment from the heat island effect in extreme weather. Urban forestry practices are increasingly seeing Councils retain established trees on account of their cooling and shading benefits. Bayside Council undertakes an annual annual tree planting program to grow cooling and shading trees within its parks, streetscapes and path networks, with considerable planting and establishment time and costs. This tree is already making a significant contribution towards mitigating against heat island impacts and requires no planting and establishment costs or time but requires our protection as an incredibly valuable urban cooling asset. I hope this text is useful and can be used in preparing local objections. Its a very beautiful tree and is definitely worth fighting for, for a wide range of reasons. Im a landscape architect who is very passionate about trees. Kind regards Sue Neale

20.01.2022 This is a plea from local resident Margaret to the Bayside Council to save the Tea tree at the site of the new Beaumaris Community Centre sports pavilion. She asks that the pavilion be built but redesigned to save the tree.

19.01.2022 http://www.treescape.com.au//recent-root-severance-of-sign We have taken this article from a members Website www.treescape.com.au it is a very interesting yet sad article which explains how important it is to have an arborist access your trees prior to any building or ground works. If this had been done prior to this driveway being constructed and the root zone was protected this beautiful tree could have been saved.

17.01.2022 Is it an owl? Is it a tree branch? No, its the Tawny Frogmouth! Theyre a nocturnal and carnivorous species often mistaken for owls but are more closely relate...d to nightjars. A loyal species, they mate for life and can live up to 14 years in the wild. A breeding pair also often stay in the same territory for more than 10 years which is why habitat loss, whether through land clearing, forestry or intensive bushfires, is the most serious threat to the ongoing health of the species. They dont like moving to other areas if their habitats are destroyed. Image by Karen Clarkson Proud to be supporting Native ARC Inc. via a WIRES Emergency Relief Grant

17.01.2022 Good evening everyone, wow what are you thoughts on this one? A little bit of history first for those who would like to know. Long time Beaumaris residents Colin McCrae who was the 2nd President of BCS and trustee of the Gramatan Ave Heathland Sanctuary and his wife Joan bought this very special land at 2 Point Avenue Beaumaris in 1945. It was purchased from their neighbours Major Harry Shaw and his wife, who owned the adjoining property known as The Point. The Macraes bui...lt their house on their land in 1949. This special little house and its gardens was always featured in the Bayside Garden trail until recent years when Joan's health failed as she was approaching 100! She was a beautiful lady and many of our members would have very fond memories of her. After Joans death in September 2017 her property was acquired by the owner of 401 Beach Rd Beaumaris, both are now being demolished. (2 Point has already had the house demolished) but the trees and vegetation still remain. We have attached plans to show you how large this development is and the impact it will have of the natural feel of the area, the bird life, the wildlife, the loss of vegetation, the unmade roads and the feel of this very special part of Point Ave Beaumaris that will be lost forever. The planning application is currently on the council website, if you would like to peruse the application in further detail. Or if you would like to object please quote the Application number 73/2020. Objections can be sent to [email protected] [email protected] and [email protected] Thanking you for your time and passion. Please note, all images and wording have been extracted from public sites.

17.01.2022 Very sadly, our long time Friend and Environmentalist Ian Parsons has died aged 93. Ian was a lovely person and a great and valued contributor to the Sandringham/Bayside natural environment. He was one of the original volunteers at George Street Reserve before the Friends Group had been thought of, a staunch Friend of Bay Road Heathland Sanctuary, a founding member of Friends of Native Wildlife, co author of the Bayside Council produced book Local Birds of Bayside 1995 and a constant observer of the birds and vegetation particularly along the Hampton and Sandringham foreshore. He was a most gifted teacher. Well miss him and his wonderful stories and astute observations.

16.01.2022 One of our committee members spotted this very cute Superb Fairy Wren at Ricketts Point yesterday. How fabulous would it be to attract them to your garden? Try planting Lemon Bottlebrush, Lemon Scented Darwina and Hakeas. Small insect attracting flowers are great to as the Male Wren likes collecting them and offering the pretty petals to the Females they are trying to woo! How special is that

10.01.2022 We are sharing this reminder as over the past few weeks members, friends and ourselves have found at least 6 dead Tawny Frogmouths and 2 Barn Owls deceased. No Marks on them. Just tragically dead. Poison was most likely the cause. Please dont use poison or baits and spread the word to help our beautiful birds.

06.01.2022 Tree identification signs now in Beaumaris Reserve A big win for those of us in Beaumaris who cherish our native trees ... Bayside City Council has installed tree identification signs for several indigenous species at Beaumaris Reserve. What this initiative means is that residents and visitors can now learn about the types and characteristics of our valued indigenous vegetation in their natural surrounds.... According to long-time BSC member, Chris Sutton, who has helped drive the initiative, the signs (although small) will help reinforce the importance and uniqueness of our local trees and encourage respect and protection of our indigenous environment. The other big benefit of the signs is that they support the work done by the Bayside Nursery by providing local residents with a view of what specific indigenous trees look like on reaching maturity. Similarly residents applying for a VPO tree removal permit can visualise the replacement indigenous trees they ideally should select from the nursery. Chris says the signs are part of the long-term vision of the Beaumaris Reserve Masterplan which is to have a variety of identified indigenous trees and other vegetation - including ground covers, grasses and shrubs - scattered across the Beaumaris Reserve to showcase our indigenous vegetation. To ensure the signs are easily found, they are located on the trees along the Cloris Ave area of the reserve so do take some time to check them out. #beaumarisconservationsociety #trees #Beaumaris #beaumaristrees #indigiousvegitation #VPOvegitation Bayside City Council, Victoria

05.01.2022 Beaumaris Conservation Society has been working along side Bayside Council for many years when it comes to saving and preserving our Trees and Vegetation. A project we have all been involved with in more recent times is the Significant Tree Register/Management Policy. We are very proud to announce and would like to thank Bayside City Council for publishing the current list of Significant trees on their Website and for stream lining the process to register a Tree.... Residents of Bayside can now register that special tree or trees, those that are special to you, your street, the birds, wildlife etc and would like to add a heightened protection to the Tree for years to come. Please stay tuned for images of some of the beautiful Beaumaris Trees that have already been listed, and please feel free to add to the list by filling out the nomination form attached. You dont have to live in Beaumaris, you can live anywhere in Bayside. Kingston Council also provides the same opportunity. 05.01.2022 Every day protected trees are removed from blocks of land to make room for new developments in Beaumaris. This week we lost the fight to save a magnificent old Coast Tea-tree, labelled Tree 46, at the Beaumaris Memorial Community Centre. The new Sports Pavilion will be built on top of the site of this iconic tree. This tree and other trees on other blocks are supposed to be protected by Vegetation Protection Overlay 3 in Beaumaris and parts of Black Rock. I thank the two Councillors Cr James Long and Cr Sonia Castelli for voting against the motion and all those who submitted objections to the removal of tree 46.

03.01.2022 Via Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning Spotting dolphins when you’re at the beach or out on the water is a truly special experience. Unfortunately, the Conservation Regulator has received multiple reports of jet skis coming too close to dolphins in Port Phillip Bay over the weekend. Each year dolphins and seals are injured by boat props and jet skis.... As the weather heats up this week and Victorians head to the coast to cool off, we remind everyone to keep their distance from dolphins, seals, and whales. It is illegal to approach marine mammals whether on land or water. High impact vessels like jet skis must remain 300m away from whales and dolphins. These laws are to ensure not only their safety, but yours too. For more information on the regulations, visit wildlife.vic.gov.au or call 136 186. To report a wildlife offence, call 136 186. Call the Whale and Dolphin Emergency Hotline on 1300 136 017 to report a whale or dolphin that is stranded, entangled or struck by a vessel. To report other marine wildlife that is sick, injured or distressed call the Melbourne Zoo’s Marine Response Unit 1300 245 MRU (1300 245 678). For more info: http://bit.ly/39VRE8j
