23.01.2022 How is your Saturday night going? For 1000’s of people they will have no where to sleep other than on the street, benches, in parks and under bridges. No home, no bed, no safety, no security in 2020!... On world homeless day we are shedding our bed and going Bedless to help the homeless. There are currently 13 of us undertaking a night on the concrete for the Shed your Bed challenge. It’s unfathomable to contemplate this is a way we expect people to try and survive in 2020. #worldhomelessday2020 #beddown #shedyourbed

21.01.2022 Thank you to Kim from The Wolter Consulting Group for completing her Shed your Bed challenge and sharing your experience A rough night’s sleep made for a very important wakeup call! Over the weekend, I grabbed a picnic rug and camped out on the tiles. One night away from the comfort of my own bed (in a scenario which is far better than those really sleeping rough) was enough for me to realise how fortunate I am to have a safe and comfortable place to sleep each and every n...ight. The day after the sleep out, I was driving through my suburb and tried to imagine the safest place I could sleep each night if I didn’t have a roof over my head. Needless to say, I was unable to answer this. It’s far too easy to take something you’ve always known for granted, or to ignore the facts of what is the reality for far too many people in our community. This is exactly why we need to help Beddown, help the homeless! You can support or join the challenge here - https://www.mycause.com.au/events/shedyourbed Like Kim you can participate from your own home, the rule is simple, you can't sleep in a bed.

21.01.2022 So, 2020 didn't quite go to plan! Whilst we all can't wait to wave goodbye to the year that has been, it gives us the opportunity to reflect, to learn, to be grateful and to come back stronger. Wishing you all the very best for 2021 and thank you for your support in 2020.... Here we go! #happynewyear #homeless #beddown #stronger

20.01.2022 Beddown when boiled down to its purest form is about changing people's lives and saving people's lives through firstly providing a safe place to get a great night's sleep . This is a really eye opening article focusing on Perth, what really leaps out is the death toll on the streets of Perth and to quote: "In recent years, the average number of deaths on the streets of homeless people in Perth alone has been 30. Nationally, I have estimated the death toll on the streets of ho...meless people at more than 300, and in some years, 400. To contextualise, one comparator grimly stands out. If we accept the street-present homelessness at a little more than the ABS estimate, say at 8,000, we will find that around 5 percent of street-homeless people die on the streets each year. Australia has a population of 25 million and its annual death toll is around 165,000 0.66 percent." How as a society can we accept this? #homelessness #beddown #safety #shelter #security #sleep #savelives #changelives

19.01.2022 Merry Christmas from the entire Beddown team! We are so grateful for the continued support and cannot wait for what’s instore next year.

15.01.2022 2020 did not go according to plan for all of us, as we all wait to see the continued fall out of the pandemic means throughout 2021. What we do know that homelessness will rise further especially as we see the end of JobKeeper and JobSeeker subsidies in March. At Beddown we are working hard to re-activate our Brisbane site in March for an extended 8 week trial.... If you would like to volunteer hit the link below, if you have recently registered, thank you. We will b e looking to run orientation sessions in February and March as well as dry runs at the venue. https://beddown.org.au/volunteers/

14.01.2022 It's coming!! The start of a new wave of homelessness is coming, more support will need to be funded by Governments to cope with the increase in demand on services. From January 1 Jobseeker will be reduced to $357 per week or the equivalent of $51 per day, then when Jobseeker ends in March it's back to $282.50 per week or just over $40 per day.... #homelessness #homeless #beddown

14.01.2022 Beddown provides the homeless with a safe, secure and comfortable sleeping environment. To deliver these services and help repair the quality of life for the homeless we need your help. Today, a $20 donation will help provide a clothing pack for a person in need. Donate today! https://beddown.org.au/donate/

11.01.2022 We have been saying for a while a tsunami and new wave of homelessness is coming. So many factors are converging at once which will influence an influx of homelessness. Mortgage stress... Rental eviction moratorium has ended in Qld Job keeper and Job seeker restructuring Unemployment rates at record highs In our opinion not enough is being done for what is coming and services will become overwhelmed We are so proud of year 6 student Kayli who has raised $1,300 in just a few days for the #shedyourbed challenge. You can join the challenge for a night of discomfort so we can provide comfort here - https://lnkd.in/gwBZVWD Thank you to Erin Edwards and Channel 7 news for the story. #homelessness #beddown #actnow

11.01.2022 According to Homelessness Australia, Australia has a social housing shortfall of around 433,000 properties and about 116,000 people are homeless on any given night. We don’t think this is acceptable in 2020. We believe everyone deserves a bed to sleep in! To find out more about our mission, click here: https://beddown.org.au/what-we-do/

11.01.2022 Although there is a long way to go, this is a great start with a huge investment and commitment by Victoria Hopefully we will see more States & Territories across Australia also adopt, invest and commit too! Homelessness is going to rise to a level we have never seen before, so a multi-layered approach needs to happen not just at the home level but the other support services also.... #victoria #homes #homelessness #beddown

08.01.2022 Did you know that at least 8,000 Australians won’t be sleeping safely tonight? Our core Beddown principle is that everyone deserves a bed to sleep in. We repurpose spaces, generally underground car parks, into pop-up accommodation to provide a safe, secured and sheltered good night's sleep for people in need. By donating $60 can provide a goodnight’s sleep for two people at a Beddown venue.... Donate today! https://beddown.org.au/donate/

07.01.2022 It's just over one week until we take part in the #shedyourbed challenge. Please consider supporting us or one of the other individuals, families or teams participating in the challenge. Thank you to everyone who is taking part and who is donated, so awesome You can donate or join our team by following the link below. #shedyourbed #beddown #homelessness #challenge #community #support #worldhomelessday

07.01.2022 The aim of Beddown is to take spaces that are commonly used and busy during the day but at night are left vacant or empty. Beddown then activates and repurposes the space at night into pop-up accommodation to ensure the homeless, those who are sleeping rough are then able to come and get into a bed at night. To find out how you can support Beddown visit: https://beddown.org.au/home/make-a-donation/

07.01.2022 Please take a moment to consider these two numbers. 1) 8,000 2) 33,000... The first number is the pre-pandemic approximate number of 8,000 people sleeping rough across Australia every night based on the 2016 census. The second number is the number rough sleepers and other homeless people have been booked into hotels and other temporary accommodation during the pandemic, but let's just think of that for a moment "33,000" with only a small number expected to go into longer term accommodation, where will the remainder end up? Whichever way you look at this, it is a massive number of people. This is the reality of now, then there's what going to be coming. We are simply not ready as a country for what is coming. #homeless #homelessness #beddown #notready #forwhats #coming

06.01.2022 Did you know that many people who are homeless suffer from sleep deprivation, this can lead to many serious physical and mental health conditions? These include: Depression Diabetes Hypertension Obesity... Memory Loss Impair cognitive function and lead to alcohol or drug use. 06.01.2022 Starting to look at revising what the next three years looks like strategically for Beddown on the back of what has been a pretty messed up year for everyone (t...o put it lightly). What we do know is we are going to see homelessness rise to a level never seen before here in Australia. So looking at what the destination for a guest is to end their homelessness, then how and where Beddown becomes the departure lounge on their journey. We will look to do this through a possible expanded range of value added services to potentially pilot and trial which will need to get board support and approval. It absolutely breaks my heart what is coming, making Beddown play it's part in the solutions gives me some comfort. Let's see where we end up on this part of our journey! #homeless #homelessness #value #beddown

04.01.2022 It is estimated that up to 33,000 homeless people have been provided temporary accommodation throughout the pandemic, with only a small % expected to go into a longer term solution. So, the question becomes, where do all those 1000's of other people go? This is sadly what we will now see more of across the country and before we see the effects of the end of both JobSeeker and JobKeeper in March. #homeless #beddown #tsunami

03.01.2022 Hard to believe it's been one year since we done something that had never been done before and showed the world how to look at space differently to help the Homeless. Such a hard and challenging year since in many respects but lots of exciting opportunities coming up! As we all try and make sense of the year that has been so far, homelessness will significantly increase as a result. More needs to be done to support our homeless which includes encouraging innovative ideas with...in Government rather than trying to lose them in the red tape and bureaucracy. It's very hard to do good! We will continue to fight for good. #homelessness #beddown #safety #shelter #security #services #sleep

03.01.2022 A saddening start to the New Year. Just to remind everyone, we now live in the year 2021, and people have to resort to seeking shelter in a bin and lighting fires to keep warm, really? It's just not good enough. #homelessness #beddown #safety #shelter #security #sleep #services

03.01.2022 Beddown is always looking for volunteers to help us transform the lives of Australia’s most vulnerable. As we begin to reactivate our Brisbane venue, there are several volunteer roles available including: - Set up & Check In - Overnight ... - Pack up & Check Out - Services scheduling If you are interested in helping out in any capacity, please complete our online form. We would love to hear from you! Become a Beddown Hero today: https://beddown.org.au/volunteers

03.01.2022 Mission Australia’s Young People’s Experiences of Homelessness 2017 Report found that 1 in 6 young people had experienced some form of homelessness. Those who experienced homelessness were much more likely to indicate that they experience barriers to education, employment and were more concerned about mental health with a higher likelihood of meeting the criteria for probable mental health issues. We believe everyone deserves a bed to sleep in and repair their quality of life. To help us support this mission, please visit our website here: https://beddown.org.au/get-involved/

03.01.2022 My thinking of late is that Beddown can play a bigger role towards ending a person's vulnerability through a more refined and expanded pathway. It would possibl...y consist of first and immediate response venues, transitional venues and home venues. I think there is a real opportunity to innovate and make an impact in changing people's lives towards ending rough sleeping. Collaboration is key, vital and at the heart of what we do and will remain strong throughout our / potential service offerings moving forward as it is embedded into our DNA. #homelessness #beddown #endhomelessness #pathways #collaboration
