21.01.2022 Hurrah. To be published in the upcoming "Zodiac" magazine, only my third US publication. The mag is subtitled "Non-Binary Publication" oddly enough, with the theme, "Prohibition". How do I fit? Wrote a short story of my usual 500 or so words, "Rudd's Beer", an Australia story if ever there was. Happily, they'll read it in California. Issue 25, 2021, and get a laugh or three. 19.01.2022 Viewpoint. How do you write 'from the sea's viewpoint'? It's a problem I set myself, and it's proving to have more dimensions than expected. The-sea knows its world, and how it works, and resorts to the metaphors and facts of its existence. It compares and contrasts, as we do, and finds meanings unexpected, most of which sink into the past. The surprising new elements are 1. it has imperfect knowledge of what lies beyond its shores, and often make comic errors about other's b...ehaviours and ideas. 2. The other surprise is the sea manifests itself in mood swings, in contradictory sensibilities, paralleling turbulent depths, the shallows of bays and reefs, and the glimmering surface of its waters, ie, in the tone and pace of the writing. I'm astounded at the breadth applied to a single, significant incident (the book's subject) in the world's most massive, murderous war, WW2, where 3% of the world's population died, 4% made homeless, and another 7% injured or wounded. I listen to Mahler while writing, so apt for the scale of events. Not yet sure why Ravel is also, but it might also be time to dip into Rimsky-Korsakov and Stravinski. Love and beauty ease the pain.
