24.01.2022 A recent photo of a Nankeen Night Heron by Keith, thanks for sharing your photo! What a great shot! They are so often hiding right inside the bushes at the waters edge and barely noticeable. A tip for those who hope to get a glance: a favourite spot is opposite the boardwalk, scan the low branches that reach out across the water and look for any flashes of the beautiful nankeen colour!

19.01.2022 A friendly reminder that the playgrounds are still closed this week. I'm sure there are many families excited by the prospect of having access to outdoor playgrounds again from the 14th. To make sure everybody gets to enjoy their time at the Sanctuary, please be mindful of other's needs and concerns when using the equipment. It may be a great opportunity to model patience, sharing and good communication for your children!

19.01.2022 We need your help! Each spring, Mountain Pygmy-possums wake up from hibernation, hungry for nutritious Bogong Moths to eat. Bogong Moths usually fly to meet ...Mountain Pygmy-possums in the billions, but this hasn’t happened in the past three years. Our scientists want to know where the moths are. If you see a Bogong Moth at your home this spring, take a photo and upload it to Zoos Victoria's Moth Tracker: https://bit.ly/3caC9s4 Thanks for your help, Federation University Australia!

17.01.2022 Here is a free booklet of Kulin nation plants and their traditional uses. If you are planting an indigenous garden, it is best to source locally indigenous plants. Near Blackburn Lake, you can get these from Bungalook Nursery or Green Link Nursery. (Though you might have to wait until after stage 4!)

09.01.2022 As part of an awareness program about "litter in the lake", team members from the BLS Litter Action Project http://www.melbournewater.com.au/litteraction and a Council representative from the Sustainability Dept joined the Aquest team from RMIT, to find out exactly where the litter from the lake ends up once it gets into Gardiners Creek! The journey of 5 drink bottles containing GPS trackers launched into the creek just below Blackburn Lake has been tracked on the following ...video. Be surprised and amazed, and maybe disappointed too, that we, as a community, allow any litter to enter our waterways anywhere! Check out the journeys of 100 GPS-tracked bottles released in 20 creeks around Melbourne, at http://www.rmit.edu.au/littertrackers You will be amazed at where some of them end up! It may be on your favourite beach!

09.01.2022 I wonder if we will see Blackburn Lake in the calendar? Maybe it will be your photo?

03.01.2022 Whitehorse Council have created some great educational videos about our natural environment - check them out on the World Around Us page, there's 4 videos to start with, and more on the way! https://www.whitehorse.vic.gov.au//schools/world-around-us

02.01.2022 A quick reminder that with the sun out we may see lizards or snakes at the sanctuary. This is their home, they are protected and must be left alone. The best way to enjoy the sanctuary is to obey normal bushland etiquette (which you should be doing anyway!) - stick to the paths, keep your dog on a leash, watch where you tread and don't approach the wildlife. If you see a snake, observe it from a distance - they are beautiful creatures!

02.01.2022 Ian Moodie from Whitehorse Council will introduce you to local spring wildflowers - you might be able to name some on your next walk! https://youtu.be/VyY8et7EDhE

02.01.2022 Online school holiday program - bookings essential!
