24.01.2022 ***NEW BLACK PETE SWORDFISH WIND-ON LEADERS*** Here is one of the new wind-on leaders we have designed for specifically targeting swordfish. The wind-on pictured is 30 long and is made using Momoi 400lb XH leader. All swordfish wind-ons come with a heavy duty ball bearing swivel which is crimped to the end of the leader, below a light sleeve to stop the crimp getting stuck in your rod tip. We have also whipped 2 small spaced loops starting approximately 80mm below the end of... the dacron on the leader. You will see in photo #2 the Black Pete swordfish light attached to the leader with 2 rubber bands. The reason for using bands opposed to shark clips is to assure an easy break away system when the leader comes into grabbing distance, and also to reduce the incidence of any damage to your line. When you deploy the swordfish bait and sinker it stretches the trace and rubber bands taught, pulling the light in tight to the leader; making the rig streamlined when dropping down into the abyss. This particular rig is obviously NOT IGFA legal due to length, at the same time saying that IGFA compatible rigs can easily be made to order in varying lines classes on request. Please ask your nearest Black Pete stockist about our latest swordfish rigs. See more

23.01.2022 Just got back from the 30th Lizard Island Black Marlin classic which I fished on the mighty Askari. Askari had another great tournament after their win in the Cairns 50th. We ended up coming second with 8 fish, 1 fish behind Bob Jones on Ice Man who took out the tournament. Well done Bob, well deserved! I took out champion angler with 8 fish. Most of the fish we caught where between 100 and 250lb, except for one big girl which was over the magic 1000lb mark. Super stoked to s...ay the least!! A big thanks to Shane Sipthorp owner of Askari who invited me to fish the tournament. I would also like to thank Corey, Rhys, Junior and Scotty Thorington for a great trip. Many good times and laughs where had. Also top effort Corey not leaving the wheel and pushing through your sickness which you had for half the tournament, your one tuff cookie!! I would also like to congratulate Daniel Climb Dog Klien for his top effort on his first season as a captain up in Cairns after being on the deck of Askari for many years and various other boats. Climb Dog came third on Port Hacking boat Cookie, stoked for you buddy!! Im sure you will be a captain we will be hearing heaps of over the years. Well done to all the Port Hacking boats that traveled to Cairns this year, especially Outlaw who didnt dissapoint the fleet as they do in Sydney. They took out their 25th tournament in a row as the #1 party boat. They also got a 850lb for their efforts, yewww!!! Anyone wanting to fish Cairns 2017 should contact Hardcore gamefishing or Askari for a trip of a lifetime. Askari is a serious weapon of a boat and has to be as far as Im concerned the best game boat ever produced in Australia. Scad Man

23.01.2022 Finally I had the chance to go fishing for swordfish after all the hype and talk over the past month or so- I must say all the calls and stories were doing my head in! Last week Sean Tracey (who is currently sattelite-tagging swordfish down in Tasmania) called me to say there was a good weather window and I should get down there ASAP. Myself and great mate Daniel Klien booked our tickets within about 2 minutes. To cut a long story short the 1st day was pretty quiet. On the s...econd day Leo Miller joined us on his boat as well to sattelite tag a swordfish. Leo nailed one straight away which unfortunatly couldnt be revived after the fight, despite an hour-long effort to do so. His crew member Simon then hooked up again about an hour later. Leo had a bit going on as he had a second line out so the decision was made for Simon to jump on our boat. Not long after we tagged a 50kg model. A couple of ours later we got out turn. We got a 50-odd kg fish to the boat in about 25 minutes. This was the perfect fish to tag as it was nice and healthy. Very stoked I must say to get my first swordfish. Later Kleiny mentioned that that it was my 6 species of billfish caught in 2016. Happy as!!! I have been gathering heaps of information on swordfish over the last month or so, so I can put together a range of swordfish related products for Black Pete Marine and our retail partners. I would personally like to thank the following people for sharing their knowledge and helping me out. I had NO idea about targeting these species so getting info from the following people helped me a heap. Anyone on the NSW South Coast and Sydney should check out Richard Abela, who is doing talks next week at various stores. Go to them if they are not already booked out as the info shared is 100% worthwhile!! Im sure he will do other talks in the very near future. Richard Abela. George Lirantzis, Lee Rayner, Leo Miller, Sean Tracey, Locki Nicholas, Daniel Klien have all been legends and their imput is much appreciated. Over the next week or so I will post some photos and info on the new rigs I have been working on which will be available in your fravourite tackle store early next week. This is an amazing new fishery and I look forward to seeing Seans data and how many different ports around Australia have grounds off them to chase the pinnacle of the gamefishing world the Broadbill. 22.01.2022 Here are some sweet shots of some blue marlin encountered while fly fishing in Exmouth with Eddie Lawler from Peak Sportfishing. Gordon Dunlop, Neal Sheppard and Ray did a 7 day fly fishing charter last week. The blue in the photo was estimated at 200kg and was lost after 5 hours just out of tag range when the hooks straightened. Over the 7 days the boys got 2 x blues up to 150kg and also caught 2 x stripe marlin and lost another 2 blues. If you look close up on the first pho...to you will see the SL-12 has penetrated deep into the fish. Fly fishing for any marlin, especially blues is next level fishing so well done to all on board! Gordon could not speak highly enough of Eddies fishing abilities and marlin fishing expertise. Exmouth is a place Im sure is at the top of every ones bucket list, I know its at the top of mine. One other thing Gordon mentioned was how happy he was with the New MoMoi Shockleader. He was using 150lb Shockleader on all his fish including the 200kg blue he had on for 5 hours. He also said Shockleader will be his new line of choice with its extra stretch, abrasion resistance and amazing knot tying abilities and knot strength. Check it out at you local tackle store. Is available from 12lb to 200lb and suits many fishing applications and is gaining popularity very quickly through the fishing community. MoMoi has also won many awards around the world over the last year or so as the best new leader to hit the market, so check it out!! See more

21.01.2022 $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Well done to Marlin Parker and the Quitena team for their win in the world famous Bisbees Black and Blue Tournament. Marlin designer of the Marlin Magic range of lures and the team walked away with their first place win with a staggering US$2.186 MILLION DOLLARS!! The fish that earnt them the $$$$ was a 534lb blue marlin and was caught on a Marlin Magic Large Pear. This is the second time Marlin has won the Bisbee so well done! The large ...pear is definitely a lure worth adding to your spread especially when chasing blues. I was lucky enough to fish with Marlin in the HIBT on Marlin Magic 2 in 2008 where we got a 976lb blue on 24kg. This fish was also caught on a large pear. Lets hope Australia one day has large tournament jackpots like this. Even winnings at 10% of that what the Bisbee offers would be well welcomed!! See more

19.01.2022 Momoi, the #1 monofilament in the World! It's Momoi's main claim, and has rung true the world over. It is then no surprise that the top 10 finishers from the Tag and Release division in this years 2018 Interclub tournament were running Momoi IGFA main line or Momoi NEO Fluorocarbon leader. As were the top two boats in the Capture division.... (Congratulations to Born Free and Workhorse once again!) Momoi NEO Pink Fluorocarbon has been steadily gaining in popularity, and easily converting all newcomers who try it. It's no surprise that with such incredible Marlin fishing along the entire East Coast that 80lb, 100lb, 130lb, and 150lb sizes have been walking off the shelves. If you want to give yourself the best chance at connecting with your first, or your hundredth Marlin this season, get some MOMOI between you and that next fish!!!

18.01.2022 Well Done to Mike Bonnici on this awesome catch in Vanuatu this week on Ocean Blue Charters. The dogtooth tuna in the picture went over the magical 100kg mark, pushing the scales down to 101kg. Mike has been chasing dogtooth for a longtime and was more than happy to get one over 50kg. He has definitely smashed his goal. Good luck getting a bigger one Mike, fish of a lifetime!! The fish was caught on a Shimano Stella 20,000 outfit on a knife jig and MoMoi 150lb NEO fluorocarbon leader.

18.01.2022 Swordfish Slayer! Here's a sleek deep drop rod made by Tom Bamforth from TBC Rod Co. for one of our gun local anglers to use in the coming weeks, months and years up and down the coast. Configured with a wicked Winthrop Termintor Adjusta-Butt that goes from straight to bent at a button's click, titanium Winthrop tip and Fuji SiC guides. The grip is durable heatshrink over firm EVA to withstand some grubby bait fishing. This rod has a forgiving soft tip and a lovely smooth load curve, designed to fish 12-20kg drag pressure. We will be selling some of these so if anyone is interested please message us!

16.01.2022 Tuna time off Sydney Finally got to go for a tuna fish off Sydney yesterday after all the crap weather we have encountered. Brett on Entourage called me the other day saying it looked like some good water on the charts, so we headed out yesterday morning. Marked plenty of fish from Browns to off the back of the southern canyons. Caught a Mahi and marked a couple of marlin as well as the water was up to 21.7. Decided to put a cube trail down east of the southern canyons in ab...out 1500 fathoms just prior to the tide change where the temp dropped down to 20.5. It didnt take Adam Polly long to get this nice 65-70kg fin on the cube. Marked more fish but only got the one as the sharks moved in as soon as it got dark. Definitely worth getting out there I think at the moment. Make sure you read your maps and fish the temperature breaks were the water is as slack as possible. Also wouldnt be suprised if the bluefin show up over the next week or so as colder water moves in. Both Ulladulla and Bermagui have both produced decent bluefin over the past couple of days which is a good sign. Thanks for a great day Brett, Ando and Adam!! See more

15.01.2022 A quiver of hand-picked blue marlin sized snacks all rigged up and on their way out the door to one of our Sydney customers. As this blue marlin bite continues it shouldnt be too long until these lures are doing what they were designed to do!

15.01.2022 Happy Easter to everyone out there. Lets hope the weather is good and there are plenty of fish to be caught! Whos chasing there dream catch this Easter?

15.01.2022 Live action update >>> The Marlin Magic "Ruckus" in "Evil Pink" colour combo has just taken an approximately 250kg blue marlin for angler Rob Lang onboard "Black & Blue" off Coffs Harbour this afternoon! Top fish!

14.01.2022 More bluefin and yellowfin caught yesterday. Good friend Brendon Brooks ventured out yesterday afternoon to do an all nighter, They left Sydney heads and headed down to the marks I gave him from where we caught the fish the previous day. The yellowfin in the photo was caught yesterday afternoon on a Billmark jumbo bluefin candy and the bluefin was caught last night on the cube. Both fish where caught in the same area we caught fish the previous day. They also had a few other... bites on the cube throughout the night. I also heard another boat that went down there yesterday and caught 2 x shortbill spearfish in the same area. This doesnt surprise me as the water was 21.1, similar to the temp the previous day. It will be interesting to see what the water does after the wind we are about to get. Lets hope the water pushes in and we get a decent run on the yellowfin and bluefin. Dont forget to go to your local tackle store and load up on all your favourite Black Pete products such as MoMoi, Billmark and Marlin Magic lures to give yourself the best chance of catching the fish of a lifetime!! 13.01.2022 Black Pete Marine's James Thackeray is currently sitting in 3rd place winding marlin in aboard Askari in the Lizard Island Tournament. Some bigger fish turning up some hoping for some gold colour over the next two days!

13.01.2022 There has been a lot spoken about these proposed Sydney Marine Parks in recent months, and the reality is that they are a very real possibility within the coming year. Of course the big question on all of our minds is, "How will this effect us rec fishos?". While, the organisations that are pushing for this marine "sanctuary" are constantly saying that we will not be affected by a small amount of areas being locked out to recreational fishing, what they fail to realise is tha...t in Australias largest city, that by taking away areas (which also happen to be some of the most productive and popular grounds in the greater Sydney area), they will place much more pressure on those remaining and surrounding areas. North Sydney Harbour, North Head and Long Reef are three proposed areas which would be wrapped up under a complete fishing ban, which I would personally find as a major threat to my Sydney fishing career. I am yet to see any significant scientific research or findings that would suggest to me that these areas require complete environmental protection... Surely, we can work on fixing more pressing issues that are harming our marine environment, such as pollution, rain run off and the ever present climate change, rather than slamming rec fishos and giving us a blanket ban. More info can be found on the Fishing World website and feel free to contact our powers that be (see on Fisho website) and ask them to answer you questions, as to why they dont want you, your children or their children from enjoying the outdoors in some of the Worlds greatest and well managed fisheries found around any large city! http://www.fishingworld.com.au//sydney-s-long-reef-and-nor

13.01.2022 Marlin Magic and Aloha Lures Victoria bound with and without wings, rigged ready to go. Most of the lures in the photo are Marlin Magic baby hard heads which have been a stand out lure this year on the bluefin down in Vic, Tas and SA waters. These 10" lures also double as a great marlin lure and are well worth adding to your spread over the Christmas New Year holidays and encountered for many marlin on the NSW south coast earlier this year. They will also make a great Christmas present and any fishermen happy.

12.01.2022 Your passion for fishing normally starts through your parents when your young. Here is an article from Modern Fishing back in 1980 that my dad Peter Black Pete Thackeray wrote. I was only 7 at the time when the old man introduced me to fishing, a overnight trip that is one of my earliest memories in life! My passion turned into my career so Im pretty stoked with that. Im sure heaps of other people out there can thank their parents for introducing them to fishing. Cheers Black Pete. James

11.01.2022 BULA!!! As all of you I am sure have heard, Fiji has just recently been struck by a catastrophic Tropical Cyclone event that has damaged, destroyed and sadly even killed in the past week. Im sure that if you are like me, when you think of Fiji, you think simply of a postcard perfect tropical paradise (with great fishing!)and smiling local faces.... Black Pete in conjunction with several other great businesses and individuals are working to provide much need aid and assistance to this lovely island nation. Firstly, we have organised with the people involved with the Port Stephens INTERCLUB tournament kicking off this weekend, that there will be a large clothing bin placed at the top of the ramp at the weigh station. Anyone who is in the area, or heading to the area and has any unwanted clothing items they wish to donate to Fiji is welcomed to drop it off in the bin provided. It can be something for kids, adults, large, small, it will all help and all be very much appreciated. In conjunction to this, anyone who is unable to get to the Port Stephens drop off station mentioned above, we at Black Pete Marine, will be taking clothing donations at our warehouse (during Monday-Friday work hours) as well. So if you have any clothing items you wish to donate, please either drop them off to us at work or send them to us (pm us for address details). Secondly, we are also organising a large fundraising event to be auctioned at the Port Stephens Interclub Tournament Presentation dinner on Sunday the 6th of March. Bob Baldwin will be presenting the night which will involve an Auction with all proceeds going to a yet to be determined aid group working in Fiji at the moment. We have already had some fantastic and very generous items placed up for auction on the night such as: -Tim Dean has offered a full days charter onboard CALYPSO. -Scott Thorrington has offered a charter onboard FREEDOM -Phil Webster has offered a $4000 harbour charter onboard LITTLE AUDREY. -Bennett Surfboards have donated a brand new SUP BOARD with paddle. -We at Black Pete are offering large FISHING TACKLE package worth over $1000 -Newcastle Port Stephens GFC have donated $3000 -Andrew Stubbs at Onboard Engineering has offered $1000 worth of services -A good friend who wishes to stay anonymous has also donated a full 20 container of clothing to assist in Fiji as well! And this is only after 3 days of instigating this event along with good mate George Trinkler (who is working on offering a Fiji fishing package that will include 3 day charter at the Denarau tournament, entry fee, and accommodation!!!) which I suggest you all stay tuned for. If anyone out there has a product or service they wish to auction off at the presentation dinner, please contact us through [email protected] So, please, get involved and for those involved in the Interclub this year, please buy yourselves a ticket to the presentation dinner and have a bid for a good cause! CHEERS and VINAKA!!!!

10.01.2022 Well all the talk in Sydney Gamefishing circles has been of Blue Marlin lately, and rightly so! In a very rare, yet welcomed change, these blue water speedsters have proven to be one of the most consistent targets for those willing to go wide and get stretched. Vic Levett from Oceanhunter Charters has been doing the miles in his days off and has not been disappointed. Having landed a handful of lovely blues over the past couple of weeks, including going 3 from 5 on Monday!... One of his best producing lures has been the ever faithful BILLMARK 12" APOLLO in the equally faithful "Evil" colour scheme. He now always carries a backup on board after losing one to a good 200+kg fish on the trace after 3 hours. Another boat that has been harassing these Sydney Blue Marlin is Entourage, skippered by Daniel "Kleiny" Klein. Over the past 5 days fishing on Entourage he has landed 12 from 13 blues, between 80-220kg! Many of you who have been up to do a Cairns season over the past decade have probably heard of him, having fished with one of the best in the business in Corey Hard on ASKARI for the past 6 years. He is definitely making a name for himself and one to watch out for in coming years.

08.01.2022 Well done to Corey and the crew of Askari that have just taken out the Cairns 50th Anniversary with 4 fish, great effort!! Fishing was pretty slow for most boats, saying that there was still some great catches. Bill Billson got this slob of a black marlin on Viking 2 which he put at over 1000lb pounds. What a great shot of it on the leader with the tag going in solid. Tim Dean also got this nice 800lb blue marlin (see photo). As far as I know Althado, Viking 2 and Calypso all got 3 fish each with few boats getting 2 fish. Daniel climb dog Klien did well on his first season behind the wheel in Cairns releasing 2 fish on Cookie. Well done buddy! Im currently counting down the hours to the Lizard Island tournament which starts next weekend. Lets hope there are plenty of fish around.

08.01.2022 I must say it's very sad news today to hear about the passing of Brett Thomas yesterday. Black Pete Marine would like to pass on their condolences to Brett's wife Sarah, daughter Emily and son Henry. Our thoughts are with you all. What can I say...... Brett was an absolute legend! He was a great mate to many of us and would always go out of his way to help you out. So many people out there would of shared some of the best moments in their life with Brett, whether it was at se...a or on land. Brett and Leon caught me my first ever marlin on the Sheriff, a moment that is sketched into my mind forever. I'm sure many of you had similar memories with Brett, Please feel free to share them as we all celebrate his life. I'm sure Brett would want us to have a beer or Vodka while remembering the moments we have shared with him. As Brett's great mate Hoggy said today. He's gone fishing with his dad Leon. R.I.P buddy you will be missed greatly. See more

06.01.2022 Whos going out this weekend chasing Tuna?? Looks like great water down the South Coast from the border to Jervis Bay. Water has moved in a bit so it looks like boats heading out from the Sydney region are in with a chance to find good water. I have added a photo of the Marlin Magic baby blue series which are worth putting in your spread. I have found this my number #1 tuna lure 5 years in a row now, The bluefin in this post was taken on one just earlier this week. They come ...in 3 different sizes, baby, infant and tiny. Not only are these lures awesome on tuna, they are absolutely dynamite on marlin too, especially blues and are a lure the Kona fleet have had as their #1 producer year after year on both blues and tuna. Best of luck to everyone fishing this weekend!! Please feel free to send your photos to us of your captures and releases. See more

06.01.2022 The unstoppable duo of Hayley and Mike Bonnici have been at it again over the past two weekends. Fishing out of Sydney in their 21 trailer boat with good mates, they have released and landed some cracking fish in the warm blue waters running down the coast of late. Mike has had some his success on both Billmark and Marlin Magic lures, catching several Blue Marlin, a lovely 45+kg yellowfin as well as numerous large Mahi Mahi. The Billmark 12" Apollo, and the 12" Destroyer hav...e both taken fish, as has one of his new favourites, a Marlin Magic Baby Hard Head. It sounds as though their are REALLY good numbers of Blue Marlin along the coast between Coffs Harbour and Sydney at the moment with quite a few boats encountering these speedsters!

06.01.2022 Best of luck to all our game-fishers nationwide heading out tuna and marlin fishing! Lets hope the runs of fish we keep hearing about keep going. Heres Fridays batch of Marlin Magic and Moldcraft blue marlin lures ready to ship this afternoon to one of our Gold Coast customers!

05.01.2022 Swordfish Slayer! Heres a sleek deep drop rod made by Tom Bamforth from TBC Rod Co. for one of our gun local anglers to use in the coming weeks, months and years up and down the coast. This will surely be some elite level stuff if they can pull off the win!! All fish getting taken on Momoi line and le...ader of course! 04.01.2022 The founder of Moldcraft Lures Frank Johnson has passed away in Florida. Black Pete would like to pass on their condolences to his family. Franks son Frank jnr (pictured) with his dad will keep the Moldcraft name and lures going for many years to come. Im sure nearly every boat who game fishes has some kind of Moldcraft Lures in their lure bag. Moldcraft Lures have caught more world records than any other lure in the world so Frank jnr and family should be super proud of their dads innovative contributions to the game fishing world. Next time your out there trolling around throw a Moldcraft out in your spread in respect to Frank Johnson creator of the world famous Soft Head lure. R.I.P Frank!!

04.01.2022 Good luck to everyone fishing the Sydney Mako Tournament this weekend. Who out there would have the courage to leader or throw a gaff into this monster mako??

03.01.2022 A big thank you to Scotty, Junior, Ben and Pip for a great weekend on the mighty Freedom over the weekend fishing the 2018 Interclub, it was a pleasure fishing with you all. If your keen on a VERY experienced charter operation give Scott Thorington a call on 0419440869. Even if you have your own boat its well worth chartering someone like Freedom out as it could help you give the edge you need for catching good numbers of fish in the Port Stephens area or anywhere on the East Coast. They are having a great season at Port with many good weeks still to come so book your charter ASAP.

03.01.2022 Momoi, the #1 monofilament in the World! Its Momois main claim, and has rung true the world over. 02.01.2022 How nice do these Marlin Magic and Aloha Lures look with wings? Black Pete can now add wings to all lures in our range whether they are Marlin Magic, Aloha or Billmark lures. Our new wings also come in various colours. Ask for them at your local tackle store or contact us and we can tell you where to get them.

02.01.2022 Another cracker day on the Entourage!! The blue fin have moved in in reach for Sydney anglers. We fished yesterday (Sunday) out of Sydney and headed to the temp break down south. The fish we caught where in about 1300 fathoms of water off Port Kembla, which was about 50 miles from Sydney heads. Anyway we caught 3 fish off a triple hook up after marking them on the sounder and around the temp break. We only weighed the one fish for Jack Doyle which went 125kg on 24kg. The two ...other fish went around the 120kg and 85kg approximately. Brett Corn Dog Cornish also landed a nice 50kg bluefin around 1130pm just to top things off. All fish where caught using Marlin Magic baby blues and also baby hard heads. MoMoi once again let us put maximum pressure on these fish so our longest fight was about 30 minutes. Thanks Again to Brett, Klieny and the rest of the Entourage crew, yet another sick day at sea with great friends. Get your arses out there ASAP!!!!!!! See more
