12.01.2022 YES our tours are still running and YES, we have exciting maintenance work being undertaken at the Gaol. Building for Queensland is currently carrying out essential maintenance on the gatehouse of No.2 Division in time for its centenary in 2021. Work being undertaken includes: roof repairs, plasterwork restoration, repointing brickwork, exterior and interior repainting - including the prison gates and parapet, cleaning and repointing of perimeter walls. It is amazing to see ...the quality of the workmanship and the dedication of workers. It is a major investment in the heritage of the prison and credit should be given to the Department of Housing and Public Works who brought forward this project during COVID-19. Everyone here at the Gaol is excited at the work being undertaken.

07.01.2022 DID PRISONERS HAVE CASSETTES & RADIOS On 12/10/2020 former prisoner Wayne Weaver answered this intriguing question: Throughout most of Boggo Road’s history radios were totally prohibited in prisoners’ cells. Speakers in some cellblocks in prisoners’ cells connected to a radio - allowed them to hear programs. ... As far back as the 1930s prisoners used amateur crystal radio sets in their cells, smuggled into the prison, to get the results of races on which they betted, to hear news, music and other programs. This prohibited use led to officials at Brisbane Prison to introduce radios into the cellblocks, to try to counter these illegal radios. Following the 1988 riots reforms included allowing prisoners to purchase a small AM/FM radio for use in their cells. Prisoners had to buy the batteries for their radios, these were not provided by the Government. Prisoners were not allowed cassette players or large radios in their cells, for security reasons. Wayne recalled that at Sir David Longland and Borallon Prison in the early 1990s, prisoners were allowed larger devices including even boom-boxes. In the Brisbane Correctional Centre however these were never allowed. Do you have a question of your own? Meet Wayne, hear his story and ask him in person at our MA15+ Former Prisoner Tour @ Boggo Road Gaol (Jail) this Sunday. Tickets available at https://boggoroadgaol.com/tours/prisoner-tour/
