25.01.2022 FINALLY the full restoration of Andy Meisel’s circa 1850 B.S. Fendt Maggini double bass is complete and was handed over today. It’s taken a few years to get this beast back up and running, but it has been so worth the wait to hear Andy playing it in the shop today. A smooth, rich and royal sounding instrument that can soon be heard in Opera Australia’s upcoming season of The Merry Widow. Im happy with the result, the arching shape is looking great and although there are still a bunch of areas to mend, im confident im on the right track. Ill do a few edge repairs before putting the top back in the cradle to keep the perimeter in shape. 21.01.2022 This was a fun job that went home today Starting with a 3/4 bass, shorten neck handle by 32 mm with a long splice, install carbon fiber rod, re-set neck with a 40mm overstand and dropped into the block a little, do a travel (bolt on) neck conversion, reshape the heel to achieve an E thumb stop, revarnish heel ... and bassist Mike Feghali is very happy with the resulting string length of 1010mm with no false nut or northward bridge ... . But why do all this??? ... 16.01.2022 Holiday project ... while trying to work out a way to stop this old hand-carved box lid from warping, I got rather drawn into the pattern, it’s more complex than it first seems how the hell was it made? Then after sketching up the lines I discovered that it was derived out of a fine diamond grid. But even then, not so simple as I explored the changes of direction I’m not sure that I’ll ever carve this pattern into anything but now at least I know how to do it I think! 12.01.2022 Another stylish all-black scroll makeover going out soon. The C extension stick is hand carved from solid ebony and is held in place only by string tension. Latches are handmade from delrin with rubber facing, and separately adjustable pitch, height and tension. Thanks to a special spring-washer they operate incredibly smoothly and are not affected by changes in humidiy. Note also the low-profile hatpegs to replace the original worn wooden pegs. These are a new workshop product, locally machined from delrin to retain the aesthetic of the originals while allowing much easier access to the extension as they only protrude 12mm instead of the 32mm originals. They are much harder wearing than wooden pegs and are finished to look exactly like ebony.

11.01.2022 Well, I'm very happy with the way this transformation turned out, and it was a really fun job. Take a nice-sounding Romanian bass, Gliga "French" model - cleanly made, but a bit lacking in mojo - and turn it into a 120 year old beauty. Getting the right look is an iterative process; studying many old instruments, and knowing where to start and when to stop is part of the secret! Add a few setup tweaks, and the owner is very happy!

Getting an old repaired top to ring clearly when tapped, without flutter or buzz can be tricky. The cause of the flutter can be a microscopic crack that is rarely where you think it is!! 05.01.2022 As we are a very small team, Ive decided that we will continue to stay open for the foreseeable future to look after your double bass needs. However to assist with the "squashing of the sombrero", which is in ALL our interests ... well be changing a few things as follows: > Well deal with only one customer at a time ... so please make an appointment, and stick to the agreed time.... > Youll be invited to wash your hands on arrival and departure, and well do the same. And you can wash at any time, or use hand sanitizer provided. Just ask. > We wont shake your hand, but smiles, elbow bumps and foot bumps are welcome. > When you bring your instrument in. we may mist your bag and wipe down your instrument carefully. If you leave your instrument with us, well ask you to take the bag with you. > We will keep contact surfaces and the instruments wiped and disinfected throughout the day as needed. Outside, the sun is shining, and our favourite totem crows and bin-chickens are still happily keeping the gutters and rooftops clean ... while we wash our hands yet again and watch the big silver birds roar overhead, but less often now :-/ May you stay healthy and happy. Get plenty of exercise and fresh air, practice often, spend time with your family ... hopefully we will all come through on the other side of this better than how we went in. 04.01.2022 Well, here is a nice bass. Maker unknown ... ok plenty of conjectures as to provenance, but no smoking gun yet. Most interesting to me is the pegbox and scroll with its parallel cheeks all the way up to the volute. Belly of nice spruce and plain sycamore ribs and back. 1065mm string length. 200mm ribs. The internals give no real clue to me yet of origin; the bass has had plenty of work done. Varnish is intact and beautiful. Ideas? Now available for trial in Sydney. PM for details.
