25.01.2022 Wow... The Camerata Chamber Orchestra will be performing at our Linville Heritage Festival! How exciting. They have created a special performance that intertw...ines music and readings from the history of Linville and region. This is a morning event at the Linville Hall, breakfast is available from 7am with the concert starting at 9 on Sunday the 22nd November Bookings are essential and are made online https://www.trybooking.com/BMMJNA The concert titled ‘A Song With Words’ is an original work that intertwines words and music to commemorate Linville’s rich history. As a special treat, Camerata is joining forces with brilliant Australian actor, Barbara Lowing to bring residents and visitors this beautiful morning concert experience. Actress Barbara Lowing knows the area well. Her connection with the Brisbane Valley goes back to a time when her mother’s family owned a farm on Cressbrook Creek in the 1940’s. In the early 1980’s, her family moved to a farm on Fulham Road, outside of Toogoolawah and her brother still lives and works in the Valley. I am so happy to be part of the Heritage Festival. Many times my dad and I would spend time, driving and exploring The Brisbane Valley, and it’s beauty never ceases to amaze me Barbara said. For this performance a string quintet will be playing. 20.01.2022 Start of road trip from Esk to Toogoolawah, Qld - 27 April 1912 by the St. Mels church choir. Today it would take you 12 minutes by car to travel 17.5 klms north on the Brisbane Valley Highway. I wonder how long it took these folk?

19.01.2022 Township of Esk/Gallanani, Queensland. The township of Esk can be traced back to 1830 when Captain Patrick Logan surveyed the area. This led to the establishme...nt of copper mines called Eskdale and Cressbrook Creek, which also led to the formation of the town. During the 1840s settlers were moving into the region, but it wasnt until 1872 that a township was established. This town was called Gallanani, which is believed to possibly be the name for the eastern swamp hen. In 1874 a post office opened and it was called Mount Esk Post Office. In 1875 Mount Esk State School had opened and in 1876 St Andrews Presbyterian Church was constructed, then the Post Office was renamed Esk in 1881. In 1884 two sawmills were established in the area, followed by the Brisbane Valley Railway being extended from Lowood to Gallanani in 1886. While the town was named Gallanani, the station was named Esk. Also in 1886 the Anglican Parish was formed and for their first few years they operated out of the non-denominational Union Church (St Andrews). The following year in 1887 the school was renamed Esk State School. In 1889 Ellen Webb donated land to the Anglican Church for the construction of St Agnes Anglican Church. The building was designed by Brisbane diocesan architect John Hingeston Buckeridge. In 1902 a rectory and hall were added to the St Agnes grounds. By 1904 the butter factory had just opened adding more industry and jobs to the area. Also in 1904 the Brisbane Railway was extended 19km from Esk Railway Station to Toogoolawah. By 1912 Gallanani had become a primary township in the Brisbane Valley region and the Esk Station was busy transporting freight to Brisbane such as pigs, cattle, timber and condensed milk. In 1913 the town was officially renamed Esk. Sadly by the 1920s the timber industry was declining. During the 1930s Esk and the Brisbane Valley Railway were heavily used during the construction of the Stanley River Dam (named Somerset Dam in 1958 after Henry Plantagenet Somerset). In July 1941 a Lutheran church was constructed. In the 1960s the dairy industry slowed in the area. I cant be 100% certain when construction began on the Brisbane Valley Highway, but reference to it appears on QIMAGERY in 1971. I believe it was an existing track possibly dating back to the 1800s that saw slight improvements at this time by removing bends and possibly surfacing it. Being in the early 1970s it is possible that this has also come from the Wilbur Smith Freeway proposal. As a result to this there was an increased reliance to the trucking industry and the inefficient, slow and hilly rail line of the 1880s became less favourable. In March 1993 the Brisbane Valley Railway finally closed. Since then much of the line has been ripped up with some portions converted into roads. Most of the trestle bridges remain, though some were washed away in recent floods. Since the early 2000s sections of the old railway line were being converted into a Rail Trail for hikers, cyclists and horseback riders. It was hoped that it would result in tourism and breath life into these old towns that have struggled since the railway has closed and industry has disappeared. Over the years one by one each section between major towns was being completed, with the final stage opening in 2018. With this section complete the 161km Brisbane Valley Rail Trail is now the longest in the country. In 2019 it was named Public Works Project of the Year at the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia Awards for Excellence. This park pictured above (named Pipeliner Park) is where the rail yards once stood. Somerset Regional Council opened Pipeliner Park in 2010 as a result to the construction of a drought busting Toowoomba water pipeline built from Lake Cressbrook to Lake Wivenhoe. The council recently have installed one of their pedestrian and cycle counters here to help gather statistics of just how many people are using the trail. I find this rather confusing as at the northern entrance to the park there are signs instructing cyclists to dismount. This would suggest that you cant cycle through the park but can ride a horse? In 2009 the Somerset Regional Council spent $1,700,000 on a library and museum project. The Somerset Regional Council were granted $490,000 from the Queensland Governments Q150 Legacy Infrastructure Fund to assist in its construction. It was constructed next door to the Somerset Regional Council Chambers on the corner of Redbank Street and Heap Street. **The time and effort put towards compiling these articles are unpaid. 16.01.2022 In the past, before health and safety legislation, construction sites could be a risky place to be no goggles, no helmets and no harnesses. Check out these am...azing photos of early work being completed on Somerset Dam during the 1930s including images of an Albion tip truck being lowered into the dam construction site via a crane running along a wire! Construction on Somerset Dam began in 1935 but had to be suspended in 1942 when workers were diverted to the war effort. Work on the dam recommenced in 1948 and was completed in 1953. These historical photos were supplied by Colleen Fitzsimmons, whose grandfather Anthony Fitzsimmons was an auto electrician who worked at the Somerset Dam and lived nearby the site with his family during early construction.

07.01.2022 TOWARDS NINETY. 89 years ago, on 5 October, 1931, I was born at a small cottage hospital in Toowoomba. Years later, the nurse who delivered me into the world to...ld me that I made a lot of noise on the way out, a fact that my mother readily verified. I will celebrate this year’s birthday quietly with Helen while playing out time until the great day next year when I will hit the big Nine Zero. For this memorable occasion, I invite you to join me at an ‘historic event’ in the tiny town of Linville where I began school in 1936. You will find Linville by driving towards Kingaroy via Kilcoy. When you reach another village called Moore, you turn right on to a side road to Linville, My plan is to stage a walk that day to raise funds for ACTS, which is the community service arm of the Aspley Uniting Church where Helen and I are long time members. We give cash grants to people anywhere in Australia who are doing it tough and last year our grants totalled 75000 dollars. I will meet you at the Linville Railway Station which is now an historic relic. Trains on the Ipswich/Kingaroy line used to stop there every day to deliver the mail and freight and a few occasional passengers. This old railway has now been removed and the corridor is a walking track. I hope you will join me as I walk 8 kilometres back to Moore where we will have a cold drink and then walk back to Linville. If we survive that 16 kilometre exercise, there will be lunch in the old community hall. It is famous because, at age 4, I was the star turn at a concert there where I sang ‘Little Mister Baggy Britches, I love you.’ I forgot the lines but was saved by my sister, Vivienne, who ran up to join me on stage. Those of you who are not joining me on the railroad can do an historical tour of the town led by Helen. It will commence at the school where I began my hopeless academic career in 1936. I remember it vividly because the teacher used to give me the cane for writing left-handed. You will then visit the nearby creek which I fell into in 1937 fighting a bigger kid who was trying to steal my 5-year-old freckle face girlfriend. I won and she told me she was pleased. The cavalcade will move on to see my home which still stands 85 years later and is currently occupied. Back in my day, it had no bathroom and the remote toilet was 50 yards away on a famous street called Dunny Can Lane which contained 12 toilets on either side of it. The toilet paper used by all was in the form of leaflets saying ‘Vote for Theodore’. My doctor reliably informs me that the imprint remains. Then you will move on to what was once the Methodist Church where at age 6 I signed a pledge in which I solemnly promised God I would never drink any wicked booze. The upshot of this is that when I get to the pearly gates of heaven, I have a hell of a lot of smart talking to do, Finally, you will get to the timber mill where my dad worked as a labourer through the years of the Great Depression, ever grateful that he had a job, miserable though the pay was. Finally, let me make another solemn pledge to those who carry me across the finish line at the end of our 16-kilometre jaunt. You will be rewarded by a wee dram of first-class whisky from the remote western isles of Scotland that is filled with the taste of peat and seaweed and is only to be savored by true believers. See you in 12 months. Salut Everald See more
