20.01.2022 From Facebook fan Brenda Nelson Jensen, on finding a good instructor ~ "The most important questions to ask yourself after training with someone are: Am I enli...ghtened or confused after sessions? Are my horse and I progressing safely and confidently? If I clinic with a nationally known good instructor do they build off of (not contradict) your regular instructors program?" Can YOU say this about *your* instructor??

19.01.2022 Rider: Sometimes I wonder if I want to even ride anymore. Mind: You should probably just quit. Rider: But i've come so far.... Mind: This is a lot of heartache and emotional and financial stress. Rider: But sometimes it's ok to not be ok. Sometimes if you want to ride the pendulum of success, you will hit some lows before swinging up even higher. Mind: But this slump is taking forever. You'll never get out of it. Rider: Just like when you are training horses, sometimes in order for the horse to learn, you just have to wait it out. Patience is powerful. Mind: But this is too painful. Rider: Pain means you have passion. That you care. And you should never give up on something that you care this deeply about. Mind: Lets keep everything comfortable and stop pushing ourselves. Comfort is easy. Pushing is more pain. Rider: I'm sorry. Mind: No need to apologize, lets just ease off for a while. Rider: No, I'm not apologizing. I'm telling you I'm sorry so you can prepare yourself for more pain. I'm going to keep on pushing harder than ever. Mind: No, you can't! Rider: Maybe I can't. But I would rather can't than won't. Mind: Noooo! Rider: Yes, so get ready to roll. Mind: Alright then. Lets go for this. Rider: Seriously? You gave up that easy? Mind: Yes. Rider: But all those years, all that self doubt, all those times you told me I couldn't. All the pity, the frustration when you said I'd never succeed. You are giving up just like that? All it took was one time to fight back? Mind: We will do whatever you want to do. You do realize you've just been talking to yourself this whole time. Sometimes the best dressage lessons have nothing to do with riding. PC to Joseph Newcomb

18.01.2022 Something to never forget, something Bill Steinkraus said years ago---(Something like this) "When you do well, people tend to praise you too lavishly. When you ...do badly, people tend to criticize you too harshly." Basically "people", generally, don't know their ass from their elbow about much of anything. If you have a good day, good round, good show or event, good. Now go home and try to get better. If you have a bad day, bad round, bad show or event, tough. Now go home and try to get better. Ignore all the yada-yada-yada from the peanut gallery. What they think has no bearing on anything. Let THEM get on horses and go prove it if they know so damn much. Do YOUR thing. It's the only thing over which you have control.

18.01.2022 Most horse owners associate the turn of autumn with perfect sunny days of riding, cool relief from the summer heat, and the business of competition season in fu...ll swing (normally)! What many don’t realise, is it’s also a crucial time to worm your horses. Read our blog here: https://loom.ly/MY1GCaM

17.01.2022 Have you ever met another horse owner at breaking point? No? Actually the answer is yes. Yes, you have. They don’t wear a t-shirt, They might not have told yo...u. In fact I’d put good money on them NOT looking rabid & crazy & bellowing ‘LOOK AT ME! I’m as close to the edge as you can get!! But I can tell you this: You have met someone who underneath their bluster & brags was secretly wondering how they are going to meet their next haylage bill You might have met someone who won 3 classes but they were physically & mentally spent. You might have met someone who has a swanky lorry & posh tack but terrified they are making an utter arse of themselves. You might have met someone who laughed, joked & acted without a care in the world who inside was riddled with self doubt & fear. You might have met someone who is just so tired of being strong when it all feels like it is going wrong for them. So just imagine if you met someone & you gave them *that* smile, you asked if they needed a hand with anything when they were struggling in a warm up, you told them ‘well done’ after their clear round. Just imagine how lighter their heart would feel if you just asked them if they were ok when they looked worried. Just imagine the joy that could be spread by sharing your moments of idiocy to make someone who’s had a bad day feel better. No horse has ever jumped better because their rider has bitched about someone else. No rosette was won because one person slated another. Making someone else feel bad won’t make your life suddenly all sparkles & free gin. Fact. In all honesty the best days can be had with poles flying like skittles, dressage tests of utter chaos & walks of shame back from eliminations on the cross country course. The days when you laugh like loons about stupid things you’ve done & cheered on your fellow competitors, they are the days when you come home a champion, no matter what the scoreboard says. People say that the horse world is ruthless, that it is bitchy. But some of the kindest things I’ve ever witnessed & the best friends I could ever hope for have been made in the horseworld. I know it’s not a bad place. Let’s be the fist bumping, cheerleading kind sport that we know we can be. A candle stays just as bright even when it lights another. Word.

12.01.2022 "With every 'no' we eat away at the heart of the sport and erode the base on which it is founded. With every 'no,' people vote with their feet. They leave disciplines. They leave horse sport. They even leave horses behind entirely."

12.01.2022 This beautiful girl is one of my favourite horses to ride. EBL WISHES owned by Lynn Jenkin competed at her first dressage competition today. I am so proud of her! She handled everything like a seasoned professional and gave me everything she could and I couldn’t have asked for more. BHM LIVING DOLL also made her debut today and took in the environment so well. She is coming along so well and I couldn’t be more proud of her. Thank you Lynn for letting me ride your beautiful girls. They did you proud today!! #tashkentfriesians #horselandraymondterrace

11.01.2022 PERSPECTIVE I think the hardest thing to teach people working with horses is having the right perspective. A dictionary definition of perspective that I found o...n google is "a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view." Answering questions on my Facebook group this morning there were two completely different posts, asking questions about their horses, and I think that the questions cannot be answered without a change in the persons "attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view." Both posts were ignoring where the horse was up to, and skipping ahead to what the human wanted, and then being concerned about the results. It was almost like a man writing into an advice column saying "There's a girl I know, she won't talk to me, she just turns away when she sees me coming, and if I follow her and trying to hold hands with her she struggles and pulls away. How do I stop her from struggling when I try to hold hands with her?" I know that sounds ridiculous, a man would have to be completely oblivious or suffer from "Social-emotional agnosia", also known as emotional agnosia or expressive agnosia, which is the inability to perceive facial expressions, body language, and voice intonation. A person like that would make you not want to be around them, and so if you put yourself in your horse's shoes, it becomes quite apparent why they would act a certain way. The principles of "work with the horse you have today", "don't go to bed angry" and "they need to know the answer before you ask the question" are a big part of STTDP and all of them rely on you reading your horse and not putting your wants in front of their needs. That last sentence is the perspective change that's needed. In order for the relationship to grow, you need to put their needs first, and your wants come a distant second. It seems like that's backward, but that is the quickest way to get your wants met. (Photo of a Barb stallion in Morocco last year. As he got relaxed enough to lay down the call to prayer came from the muezzin in the minaret of the mosque across the road, it was one of the most surreal moments of my life ).

09.01.2022 They do their best with the information you provide them. Provide them good information

05.01.2022 Today’s clinic was a whole lot of fun! I really enjoyed coaching all of you today, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did! Unfortunately we didn’t get any photos from this afternoons jumping however we did get a few courtesy of Leila’s great photography

03.01.2022 Happy New Year. Thank you for being so kind this year.

02.01.2022 Charlie is the most beautiful boy. I’ve gotten to experience many years with him and now it’s time for him to show someone else the ropes. His price is negotiable to the right rider/home combination. He’ll be a once in a lifetime horse for an ambitious junior that wants to put in the work and reap the rewards

02.01.2022 TO THE RIDERS THAT FEEL THEY ARE NEVER ENOUGH there is no such thing as a wasted horse !! yes there are talented horses yes they could go far with the right... rider yes they have paces to die for but no they don’t care if you hack over school no they don’t know they look better than the pony next to them in the field no they don’t want to be sold to a competition home because you don’t think you can get them to that level but they love that you say hi every day they love to be groomed not necessarily to ride but only to go and let them roll in the mud and ruin all your hard work they love you to see them in the field not just to catch and ride they love to give you love in whichever way they can (mine happens to be slobber) THEY LOVE YOU FOR BEING YOU See more

01.01.2022 Your competition isn’t other people. Your competition is your procrastination, the excuses you groom, the unhealthy food you eat, the routine that takes you awa...y from your goal not towards it, the training you skip, the money you waste, the knowledge you ignore and the habits you do nothing about. 01.01.2022 JUST QUICKLY SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT Unknowingly, stuck in a system of training, there are those that are totally oblivious and some just don't want to know be...cause that is the way they do it have to deal with the training of horses in without unintentional abuse. I remember watching an ex-Olympian who rode his for the entire hour as if he was doing a Grand Prix test without one rest break? In his delightful listen to me while I ride dialogue, there was his logic as that the horse did nothing for 23 hours so this he has to work for the whole hour? Unfortunately, there were many young riders there clearly getting the wrong impression of what we should be doing? I think we are at some point where we sometimes ask too much of the horses and we all forget the classical things, such as the simple and ever so important walk rest breaks: 1) The walk in the tests is not only for the judges to assess the length of the stride but also to give the horses a chance to breathe. 2) The application applies to many for the young horse 3) Many but not as many as the young horses 4) Many for the taller horse for they like the young need more energy to complete the asks simply because of their height. Many of us unwittingly, unintentionally overdo the work or exercise phases. Not as severe as the above example. nor as in in the "she'll be ok" form... It is just we all do it even when we are aware of the principle of the walk rest break do it, we get caught up in the progress moment and keep going. One of the problems is we cannot feel the lactic acid build up in the horse weakest point, the back. If our buildup coincided with the horse we definitely walk rest break. The poor horse always gives it all even when the pressure physically is on. That is the way they work and we again unintentionally cause issues for them. It is very problematic to continue, always err on the side of caution and deploy a walk rest break if you think they need it, become the mentor, not the unintended tormentor. Back to the Grand Prix tests and or schooling, then comes piaffe and passage, then walk again, the walk pirouettes, and there are two times of walk they are in place to give the horse a breather. There was the talk of taking these away from the test, I think and know it is unfair to take these away. We already have problems with horse abuse throughout the world, and then, if we take these elements away, then the development of the horse in dressage is going in the wrong direction. Always err on the side of caution, and there is an old axiom: "if in doubt leave it out," in our case leave it out of the work and walk rest break! Hope your Tuesday treats you well and please take care, have a wonderful day, talk soon... . Cheers Trevor . Just be patient. Let the game come to you. Don’t rush. Be quick, but don’t hurry. Earl Monroe

01.01.2022 Mares aren’t always well liked and for the same reasons strong women aren’t. Opinionated? Those opinions are not without good cause and maybe you can't figure ...them out or maybe you just don’t like her opinion of you. Change it and she will always be on your side. Stubborn? She just won’t let you bulldoze her. Treat her with respect and her resilience will be an asset to you. Difficult? You just can’t handle her. You don’t have what it takes. Stick with geldings then, and leave the mare for someone who understands her and appreciates the same qualities society has subtlety taught you not to like. Here’s to mares, to strong women, and to those who CAN and DO appreciate them! Special thanks to The Evolving Equestrian for this perfect piece! And to Jaime Corum, the artist of this breathtaking depiction of the Queen.
