What is interesting in this paper is that they observe all severe respiratory failure patients with COVID-19 as having either macrophage activation syndrome or very low human leukocyte antigen expression with a large depletion of CD4-lymphocytes, CD10-lymphocytes and natural killer cells (lymphopenia) and the TNF-alpha activation of IL-6 being the main driver of this immune dysregulation.
