25.01.2022 If you have some of these you are rich indeed.

23.01.2022 This looks awesome - will definitely be pointing my own teen in this direction.

23.01.2022 Absolutely! A good article and a link to the author’s book if you want to know more.

22.01.2022 If youre a book lover, this book sale may be of interest (heard about it on the radio this morning while walking my dogs). Textbooks in Australia are very expensive and Ive been asked many times if theres a way to get them cheaper. If you want new books I would always suggest checking the price on amazon.com.au and bookdepository.co.uk before purchasing in your Uni bookshop. For accounting books you need to make sure that you get a book covering the latest accounting standards but you might manage to get an up-to-date second hand copy via Gumtree or Uni noticeboards. For books that dont have to be the latest edition, also try abebooks.co.uk - Ive picked up psychology classics at very reasonable prices. https://www.uwa.edu.au//Support-a-great-cause-at-Save-the-

21.01.2022 Lovely piece. There are difficulties for all ages in coping with lockdown, but I do think teenagers have it particularly hard; theyre on the cusp of adulthood and should be developing their independence but instead are confined and scared.

20.01.2022 A good read about disenfranchised grief. Whats that, you say? Read the article ...

19.01.2022 Useful graphic.

19.01.2022 An important read. I read this morning that 40% of young men in a survey don’t consider punching and hitting to be domestic violence. It’s a scourge on our society and, as therapists will tell you, shockingly prevalent. https://amp.smh.com.au//incredibly-shocking-younger-men-fa

19.01.2022 This is an interesting (and concise) read.

19.01.2022 Happy International Women's Day! Here's the story of an inspiring lady who turned her illness into a way to help others.

18.01.2022 A concise but good article about grief. Be kind to yourself.

18.01.2022 This is a good read. It gives valuable insight into why people stay in abusive relationships and also reminds us that our response to real and perceived fears is the same.

18.01.2022 Looking forward to reading Maggie Dents latest book, but Im not sure why Booktopia used quite such a big envelope!

18.01.2022 Great article for parents of teenagers about the adolescent brain. Or you could just attend one of Maggie Dents seminars, but the article is useful to refer to afterwards. https://www.health.harvard.edu//the-adolescent-brain-beyon

17.01.2022 I want to shout this from the rooftops! Some people put so much pressure on young people to perform well academically. But there are multiple routes to University if that’s your thing, many other ways to have a successful career if it’s not, and young people will never perform to the best of their ability if they’re overwhelmed with stress, anxiety and depression as a result of academic pressure.

16.01.2022 Food for thought.

16.01.2022 This is just beautiful.

14.01.2022 If you're a student and wondering where to start with your tests and assignments, come along to Riverton library on Monday at 5 where I'll be giving a free seminar with lots of tips. https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/study-smart-assignments-and

14.01.2022 Here’s an inspirational story for a Friday morning.

13.01.2022 Another thought-provoking post from Mind Balance Cafe. Its all about balance (which is why the blog is called that!).

13.01.2022 Do you know anyone at university or in years 11 or 12? Ive an interesting (some would say strange) background in that I spent many years working in business education (and still do, a bit) before retraining as a counsellor. I therefore have a unique perspective on the issues which students face. The link below has links to all the blog posts Ive written and videos Ive made to help students. As we approach the start of Semester 2, and recover from the disruption which Covid...-19 caused to Semester 1, I thought itd be useful to have all these available in one place. Please contact me for individualised help in the following study-related areas: Overcoming study/exam stress and anxiety Study skills/academic writing Exam coaching (tutoring) in accounting and business areas I can, of course, also offer help with other emotional difficulties, such as anxiety, depression, grief, relationships etc. https://www.carpediemperth.com.au/navigating-semester-2/

13.01.2022 This is a long read but an important one. There are way too many people out there suffering from domestic violence and it has long term effects on victims/survivors, children and other family members. There doesn't need to be physical violence for there to be abuse.

12.01.2022 Great list of ideas here. I may need to laminate this .

12.01.2022 Here's wishing all of you a safe and happy Christmas. This Christmas will certainly be one to remember and a difficult one for many. I posted the image below last year too; it's aimed at those of us who have been bereaved but most of the points are equally applicable to those who are stressed, anxious, depressed or missing those from whom we're separated. Take care, and be kind to yourself.

11.01.2022 Some useful tips for parents of teenagers.

10.01.2022 I had to share this because of the picture, but the message is good too.

10.01.2022 This is a great read on helping our kids learn empathy. However its also worth noting the comments about parents who prioritise achievements over caring. I see many parents/schools focussing on how students can achieve good ATAR scores but with little awareness of the effect of all that pressure on their mental health. If kids are stressed they wont achieve their best.

10.01.2022 I love this. As Maggie said, a great read for those with Year 12s but also with kids at other ages.

09.01.2022 This is based on the US where theyve had a much longer battle with Covid than we lucky residents of WA. Even so, Covid has had/will have a serious impact on the mental health of many of us and we may not be aware of it at first. Reach out to a qualified mental health professional if you think you may need help. If you are in crisis call Lifeline on 131114.

09.01.2022 This is a really important issue. Domestic abuse is not just about physical violence, although what starts as coercive control often ends up that way. Have you heard of the boiling frog analogy? Put a frog in a pot of cold water and turn on the heat and it won’t know it’s boiling until it’s too late. Domestic abuse often works in the same way.

09.01.2022 Great title. And some good points.

09.01.2022 I hope this is a conversation you never need to have, but if you do then you want to know what to say. Here’s some help.

09.01.2022 Free resources on self-harm from Michelle Mitchell. Ive read her book and its excellent.

09.01.2022 As Maggie says, long but good. Especially good for parents with younger children, before that pesky anxiety takes hold.

07.01.2022 Any students interested in participating in this? (Note: always a battle to get participants for your research so if you answer this it may generate good karma for when you need it . )

07.01.2022 Good advice here.

06.01.2022 Thinking of the folks over in Victoria .

06.01.2022 In my counselling practice this month Ive been seeing quite a few Uni and Year 12 students whove been struggling with study/exam stress, exacerbated in some cases with uncertainty over the impact of Covid on exams. With my unusual background in both education and counselling, Im able to offer some useful help on dealing with this (see information below). Individual counselling is available or I can put together a workshop for groups of up to 4 or speak at your school. For further information, please get in touch.

06.01.2022 Parents! If youre concerned that your child is spending too much time on his/her X-box, arrange for an impending massive storm and then bring in all the furniture from outside to block his view of the TV . On a serious note, stay safe folks.

05.01.2022 A very useful article for parents of teenagers.

05.01.2022 Parents - please read .

04.01.2022 Brilliant. Not just neurodivergent kids but anxious kids too.

04.01.2022 Useful information.

04.01.2022 In law school they teach you never to ask a question to which you dont know the answer. Today is R U OK? Day and the link below has some great resources to help you if someone says "no" and guidance on how to help them. https://www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask

04.01.2022 A good read and a very sensible approach.

02.01.2022 A lovely hamper from an equally lovely exam coaching client who has just smashed her final exams and is going out to take the corporate world by storm. Thank you - you know who you are. Also received a Christmas gift from someone of who I am a client - it’s a good day!

02.01.2022 A very instructive read on dissociative identity disorder.

01.01.2022 An important but sad article about violence in teen relationships.
