24.01.2022 Recently the 39th Governor of New South Wales, Governor Margaret Beazley, was sworn-in on the 140 year-old bible of the second Archbishop of Sydney, the Most Reverend Roger William Bede Vaughan. 23.01.2022 Interesting Facts about the Veech Library No 11. One of the more unusual items in our special collections are these original leaves illustrating the evolution of black letter types. There are 9 mounted leaves in a portfolio that span 1450 1517 and include examples of fraktur, rotunda, and nonpareil gothic type.



23.01.2022 Study Skills Morning to be held on Saturday 17th March 9.30am - 12.30pm. All new and existing students welcome! A great opportunity for new students. Content will include how to write an essay through every step of the way. From analysing the essay question, preparing a mind map, researching the essay, planning material to use, proper documentation of sources, editing and computer use is essay writing. 17.01.2022 Interesting Facts about the Veech Libray No. 9. EGYPTIAN PAPYRUS BODMER VIII The Bibliotheca Bodmeriana in Geneva holds an extraordinary collection of Greek papyri. Martin Bodmer, the founder of the library, presented Pope Paul VI with a small bundle of papyrus sheets in 1969 when he visited Geneva. Known as the Bodmer Papyrus VIII, this is the oldest known copy of the first two letters of Saint Peter, and Paul VI housed the precious document in the Vatican Library. In 2003, when Pope John Paul II celebrated the twenty-fifth year of his pontificate, each cardinal was presented with a copy of this manuscript. Edward Bede Cardinal Clancy was one of the recipients of this limited edition of 980 copies. His Eminence generously gave his replica to the Veech Library in November, 2003.

17.01.2022 Interesting Facts about the Veech Library No. 8 A letter to the Marquise de Maignelay, Claude-Marguerite De Gondi, written around 1620 by St Vincent de Paul. This item, held in the Veech Library Collection, underwent conservation treatment by Preservation Australia as part of a Community Heritage Grant from the National Library of Australia.



16.01.2022 Staff and students participating in Supervised Pastoral Ministry Hospital at St Vincents Hospital had an opportunity to meet and have a photo taken with Cardinal Ribat who was visiting St Vincents to see where many of his M.S.C confreres from PNG have been treated over many years. 16.01.2022 Interesting Facts about the Veech Library No. 10 Octavio van Veen, also known as Otto Vaenius (c.1560-1629) was admired as an erudite painter and writer. The Veech Library holds an edition of his Vita D. Thomae Aquinatis from 1610, it comprises a pictorial history of the life of Saint Thomas Aquinas with short texts of explanation in Latin to accompany the thirty one illustrations. Plate 24 (pictured) depicts St Thomas presiding over a leg operation. He is standing in the centre of a room and a surgeon is disinfecting a knife in a flaming brazier before operating on the leg of a friar.

14.01.2022 Interesting Facts about the Veech Library No. 6 WORKS OF MARTIN LUTHER The Veech Library holds 19 volumes that contain the original sermons and writings of Martin Luther. They date from 1518-1541 and are in 19th century half-calf binding These were originally from the library of William Ullathorne, a Benedictine who arrived in Sydney as Vicar general of NSW in February, 1833. Ullathorne bought each volume for half a crown from Grant &Boltons bookshop in Dame Street, Dublin.

08.01.2022 Interesting Facts about the Veech Library No. 7 SUPPLEMENTUM CHRONICARIUM Giacomo Filippo de Bergamo (1435-1520) was an Augustinian monk of the noble family Foresti. As well as writing several significant early printed works, he attempted to reconstruct a general history of all time by fusing the narratives of historians and chroniclers of the past. The Veech Library holds the first edition of his Supplementum Chronicarum printed in Venice in 1483. It ran to numerous subsequent editions and was translated into the vernacular in 1491.
