16.01.2022 Posted @hillsonghills There were eight of us in the staff tearoom with the owners, the liquidators and the lawyers. We were told the bakery was closing, and all the staff were being made redundant, effective immediately! This was on a Monday. On the Tuesday, the business changed hands, and staff were taken back as casuals. It was short lived. COVID-19 escalated, and once again, I found myself unemployed. With a global pandemic looming, I had no prospects of work, a mortgage o...n a home my husband and I had recently purchased, as well as mounting debt. My dream of being a pastry chefa dream that had been ignited in my spirit at the Colour Conference five years earlierwas crushed. The next two weeks were hard, and I felt as though I had lost my purpose. There were some days when I couldnt even get out of bed. I became fearful, and it began to affect me physically. At night, Id play scenes in my head about getting sick as well as being unemployed. My heart would start racing and Id wake up clammy and anxious. Mentally, I began feeling numb. Thats when I knew I had to make a choiceeither give in to the fear or connect with the hope and wisdom being offered by church through its online messages and services. I needed this encouragement to shape my perspective. One morning, I saw a call-out in our leadership WhatsApp group for anyone interested in volunteering at The StoreHouse. This is a social enterprise where anyone can access or shop for food and products and give back to those in need in the community. It made sense. While I was out of work, I needed to use what was in my hand, so I started volunteering for four days a week. I packed and sorted fruit, served customers and made coffees. My time at The StoreHouse became a great opportunity to help others, and after only two weeks of volunteering, I got an unexpected phone call. It was a former co-worker who offered me a job at a place where I had previously worked. Turns out, its the perfect role for me, providing a more positive work environment, theres a great sense of family, its been a blessing financially and it was definitely an answer to prayer.
