21.01.2022 Today we remember the combatants and civilians who have fallen in wars. On 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous brutal warfare. Joseph Nolan was 29 years old, 5 feet 7 inches tall with grey eyes and a fresh complexion in 1916 when he signed up for service at a recruitment meeting at the Melton Mechanics Institute with his brother. His two other brothers were already at the front. A fact not lost in an article in the... Melton Express which noted "the inequality of sacrifice in connection with the war". Joe had the rank of Private and he fought on the Western Front. Like many, he suffered from trench fever. And he was docked pay a few times for overstaying his leave. He was awarded the British War Medal 1914-20 and also the Victory Medal. Victory had come at a heavy cost. More than 330,000 Australians served overseas, and more than 60,000 died. The social effects of these losses cast a long shadow over the postwar decades. But Joseph was one of the lucky ones. He returned home. He died in 1966 at Melton and he is buried in Melton Cemetery. Joseph is remembered in the online honour roll 'Just Another Pair of Socks' created by the Melton Family History Group Inc http://meltondistrictanzacs.org.au His name, along with his brothers is also on the cenotaph outside the Mechanics Institute in Melton - right outside where he signed up. If you're interested in finding out what resources the library has to help with researching your family history, including military history join our Family History Online workshop Monday 16 November, 10am https://bit.ly/FamilyHistoryOnline
