18.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? #Coops4ClimateAction The concentration of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere as of 2018, is the highest it has been in 3 million years. Since 1990, global emissions of CO2 have increased by almost 50%.... Eleven percent of all global greenhouse gas emissions caused by humans are caused by deforestation comparable to the emissions from all of the cars and trucks on the planet. 800 million people, or 11% of the worlds population are currently vulnerable to climate change impacts such as droughts, floods, heat waves, extreme weather events and sea-level rise. UIREVI, a cooperative union in Cote dIvoire made up of 42 co-ops, is creating community forests with the people living in rural areas to help restore a third of its lost forest cover. Rede CataSampa, a network of 22 cooperatives and associations of workers in Brazil who collect recyclable waste, reduce the volume of waste in landfills by 500,000 kg per month by turning these materials into biodiesel and other usable products. The Swedish Cooperative Union, a federation of 48 consumer cooperatives that accounts for 21.4 percent of the entire Swedish grocery retail sector, reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 52 percent between 2008-2012. How? They prioritized the improvement of energy efficiency and reduction of energy consumption in the groups operations. Cooperatives are already leading the way to battle climate change. Read more about cooperatives contributions to SDG 13 goals in "Transforming Our World: A Cooperative 2030" a brief produced by the Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC). 09.01.2022 "Worker ownership challenges inequality by creating democratic businesses. Fifteen workers of Berry Insulation became worker-owners this winter when they purchased the company from founder Martin Berry through a partnership with the Cleveland-based Fund for Employee Ownership. Compared to firms with traditional ownership, worker-ownership is associated with higher productivity, wages, and profitability. Todays movement to think outside the boss builds on a long history of ...multi-racial labor organizing for fair wages and workplace protections and worker ownership. Similarly, community ownership promotes equality by empowering neighbors to do the hard work of making collective investments and sharing important decisions, such as what to do with profits. Cleveland Owns, the nonprofit on whose board we serve, is working with residents across the region to build community-owned solar and food enterprises. In the time of covid-19, one Zoom call at a time, neighbors are acting with even more urgency to take control of economic decisions that affect them, and build together what they cant build alone." https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10158266146672442&id=43384502441

06.01.2022 Great learning from the US.....

06.01.2022 Earthworker Cooperative is holding an online webinar that we believe has never been more relevant than in the time of covid-19, and you're invited! Cooperatives and a vastly different, worker owned, democratic economic structure is one that we believe can help to build a better world post pandemic, rather than returning to 'business-as-usual'. This pandemic has painfully demonstrated just how capitalism cannot deal with complex problems like climate change, social inequality ...and innumerable others. We have three great panellists for the evening: Eleanor Coffey Co-founder and worker-member of Redgum Cleaning Co-operative. Redgum launched in early 2018 with 5 founding members to clean homes and offices around Melbourne using eco-friendly methods. It has since doubled in size, and its members are continuously learning about cooperatively running a business. Eleanor is active in encouraging and supporting others to start their own worker cooperatives in ethical industries. Dr Tim Thornton Director of the School of Political Economy and is employed as a Senior Researcher Fellow at the Economics in Context Initiative at Boston University. Tim is also a Research Fellow at the Global Development and Environment Institute at Tufts University in Boston. Third Speaker TBA (unfortunately Natasha Heenan has had to pull out as a speaker, we will keep you updated on a replacement!) Where: Online via zoom link When: Friday the 5th of June, 6:30-8pm Who: co-hosted by Earthworker Cooperative and Friends of the Earth Melbourne Get tickets: see link below Facebook event: see link below This event will be ticketed by suggested donation as a fundraiser for Earthworker Cooperative, so that we can continue to facilitate and further expand Cooperatives locally and further afield. This event is free for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who can email [email protected] to book a place. You can also contact the email above if for any reason you need a free ticket, no one turned away for lack of funds. Once you have booked your place you will receive a confirmation email with the link to the Zoom meeting in it. Earthworker acknowledges the Sovereign lands of the Woiwurrung and Boonwurrung people of the Kulin Nations whose land that we live and work and that this event will be broadcast on. Hope to (virtually) see you there, Earthworker Cooperative https://facebook.com/events/s/disaster-cooperativism-webinar/342318123413203/?ti=as

03.01.2022 When you own it, you can't be sacked for who you are. 'Economic oppression is an everyday reality for trans women. Even despite major cultural and legal victories, trans folks are still at higher risk of unemployment, poverty, and houselessness than their cis counterparts. According to the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey, which polled more than 27,700 trans, gender-queer, and nonbinary people, almost 20% of respondents reported having been fired from their jobs because of their gender identity or expression.'
