23.01.2022 Great opportunity for CG's to apply for funding to install Biofilta wicking beds.

23.01.2022 This is what we have been patiently waiting for.

23.01.2022 Jo Dean continues her amazing work in Tassie.

22.01.2022 Another glorious day at Blackheath Community Farm last Sunday! We spent a lot of time enjoying the beauty of all the colourful patterns emerging in the beds, an...d were blown away by the rapid growth of everything over the last week. We potted up self-seeded celery plants, planted out more silverbeet and onions, and harvested radishes, rocket, red elk mizuna, lettuces, purple sprouting broccoli and black kale. Our bush regen group really made a dint in the agapanthus which have invaded the bushland around the farm and we spotted a fruiting sour currant bush (Leptomeria acida). The 'acid drops' it produces were eaten by Indigenous Australians as well as being made into jelly be early settlers. We'll be back at 10am today ... all welcome!

22.01.2022 In recent years our greenhouse has served us well to raise plants for communal areas, some individual plantings, and some experiments in raising plants out of s...eason or out of climate. Now we are producing for our stall at the Garden Market as well, we have had to start redesigning to cater for higher volumes of seed and cutting raising, both inside and in the hardening off area outside. Doubling up some tables is a first step. A bit of recycling by Keith and Rob this weekend. See more

22.01.2022 Another fabulous CG collecting food waste for compost.

21.01.2022 It's astonishing how much a group of people working together can achieve ... it's matched only by the extraordinary productivity of nature itself! Blackheath Co...mmunity Farm was stunning last weekend. The Love-in-a-mist (nigella) were in full bloom, our onions and apples are forming beautifully, our alfalfa is flowering, our self-seeded buckwheat has taken off and strawberry season has well and truly begun. We transplanted lots of celery seedlings and some ground cherries; planted 8 more bean varieties, as well as corn, sunflowers, parsnips and cucumbers; began staking our tomatoes; and did a massive weed because EVERYTHING is growing so very well. We also enjoyed another of our wonderful lunches with Geoffrey's delicious sour dough, and we harvested radish pods, broad beans, peas, strawberries, scallions, snow peas, broccoli. lettuces and stinging nettle. We'll be back at 10am today. All welcome. PS. Our annual garlic sale on Dec 13 will be massive! Save the date. See more

21.01.2022 WCG often shows groups through the Friendship Garden. The two spaces can be very complimentary to each other as well as each having their own intrinsic purpose and value. We are happy to share our experience of who is visiting and for what reason.

19.01.2022 **November 29th Working Bee** Sunday 10am We are so excited to be able to meet with you all again for our monthly working bees. Special COVID precautions will... still be in place. Unfortunately we won’t be able to have our BBQ. BYO food and drinks. We had a great harvest of Broad beans today and used the leaves as a cover crop for empty garden beds for a boost of nitrogen. It was lovely to see the beneficial insects in action. Cant wait to see everyone soon. See more

17.01.2022 A big thanks to Sue OBrien who has inspired a revegetation project at Morris Park. Local species have been planted thanks to a Community Environment Program gr...ant. 15.01.2022 Any community gardeners outside of Melb who would like to join a major tree planting project starting at Kilmore East?

13.01.2022 Did you know some vegetables prefer to be harvested mathematically? Dan Deighton teaches Monkland State School Garden Ambassadors that plants like spinach and s...ilverbeet like to have their leaves picked sequentially at the base (in order of growth) so as not to damage other stems that can rot. This ensures more shoots can sprout and you can prolong the growth of your vegetables. Follow the patterns in nature and you will find abundance! See more

08.01.2022 One of our garden members told us about RIRDC's 'Bee Friendly: A planting guide for European honeybees and Australian native pollinators'. It gives detailed inf...ormation for urban and rural areas. The planting guide is also for mammals, other insects and birds. Heres the link to find out more https://www.agrifutures.com.au//bee-friendly-a-planting-g/ The PDF can be downloaded. It's a great read! #bees #pollinators #gardening #spring

08.01.2022 Is your CG happy to share waste from local residents & turn it into compost? Maybe if you have the facilities in place & let your community know you are willing to accept appropriate organic materials they will be encouraged to contribute to your compost & save it from landfill. A win-win for you both.

07.01.2022 On the first Saturday of the month we're now fortunate to have an experienced Bushcare Officer, Karen Hsing, to work with us to learn how to care for the bushla...nd that surrounds Blackheath Community Farm. It's a great social occasion but also a way to get to know our native plants and help regenerate bushland. We're meeting again at the Farm this Saturday 6 February from 1.30pm. We'll be in the bushland below the farm after that. Bring hat, gloves, drink and snacks. 60 Thirroul Ave (turn right into Thirroul Ave before main entrance to Mountains Christian College) Ph. 07.01.2022 It doesn't have to be expensive, is what I've learned. And you don't have to be a good gardener.

Look out for Roscoes Summer Pruning workshop here on the 9 th , no charge, just your time to come and share your knowledge and learn from an old Pro!! The Produce Swap was a huge hit! 06.01.2022 What a beautiful location for a nursery.

05.01.2022 THERE are two stories about seeds in the news today. One good, one a mystery. The mystery is a repeat of what happened in the US last month when unsolicited pa...ckets of seeds turned up in peoples' letter boxes. American government authorities advised people not to plant the seeds. Most of those seeds were reported to come from China. Australian quarantine authorities have asked people not to plant the seeds turning up in their letterboxes this week. Their provenance and species is unknown. Countries of origin include China, Malaysia snd Taiwan. Why people have received the seeds is a mystery. The good news seed story comes from northern Tasmania. It involves the setting up of seed libraries, streetfront boxes where people can freely take seed, including vegetables. Once the plants grow out, gardeners return seed to the libraries. Seed libraries are helping to grow 'COVID-proof communities' http://www.abc.net.au//plant-seed-libraries-in-la/12589220 Mystery seeds arrive in post at Australian addresses, ringing biosecurity alarm bells http://www.abc.net.au//australians-warned-to-be-o/12592348
