15.01.2022 Snowy Mountains fishing report. It was a bit of a slow start for me for the opening of the rivers this year. A combination of tons of rain, other commitments, and exploring new areas (they don't always pay off), saw few fish hit the bank for me. When I did get out to some old haunts, I've managed to get some reasonable fish though. I've also fished the impoundments a bit recently, and well let's say, they are fishing really well! We've had a very wet spring here in the mount...Continue reading

13.01.2022 Not a bad day in the mountains at a little place I hadn't ventured into for years! I had been wanting to get up to Geehi for ages now, but just never got aroun...d to it. I'm pretty sure the last time I was up there was on a fishing trip when I was 17. I remembered it as a very visually spectacular place, and well, things haven't changed, what a magic little dam This time I would take my kayak, and explore the whole place instead of just a small section of walkable bank. Even after less than 4 hours sleep, as soon as my alarm went off, I lept out of bed, such was my enthusiasm, and excitement. Even though that's basically all I do, work, sleep, eat, and fish, it kinda amazes me how I can still get so excited about trying to catch some fish on little pieces of plastic. The weather today was perfect, partly cloudy, mild temps, and light winds. I haven't had such good, and comfortable conditions for an entire day for ages! As I set off in the yak, I almost instantly came to the realization that even if I didn't catch any fish, I would thoroughly enjoy the day. The water was clear, and deep! I had packed my tackle box in preparation for this, and brought along a bunch of small, deep diving hard bodies. Fishing water that plunges away to considerable depths right off the edge calls for fishing parallel to the bank, and close to the bottom. Well this has been my experience at Island Bend, a very similiar dam. That was my game plan though, as blind casting open water to try, and locate fish at depth is a needle, in a haystack scenario. I drifted awesome looking edges for about an hour for just a couple of follows from tiny fish. Hmmm, maybe today would be slow I thought. Just as I was thinking I might not find any fish, bang! My little Maria deep diver got a bump, then bang! Fish on. Yes! It didn't feel big, and it stayed deep, thrashing wildly. I soon persuaded it to the surface, and into my net. No monster, but a pretty little specimen non the less. I fished on, and within minutes of releasing my first fish, crunch! The Maria got hammered hard, and my drag began to scream! The fish went deep initially, buckling my rod tip in the process. It soon exited the water in spectacular fashion, hurtling through the air straight towards me, and the kayak. That was cool! Watching a fish jump at you at such close proximity is certainly a visually spectacular vision. As soon as the fish entered the water, it was out again, this time crash landing on the end of my paddle. Gees, what a crazy fight! After another minute or so, and another couple of spectacular aerials, a very nice brown hit the bottom of my net. This was a better model, I was pumped! A couple of quick pics, and the fish powered off into the green depths. I spent the next couple of hours fishless, and exploring the Geehi River where it runs into the dam. I wasn't concerned though, the peace, and quite, and stunning surrounds was all I needed. The only noise other than the wind gently blowing through the forest canopy, was the occasional prehistoric sounding calls of black Cockatoo's that echoed around the mountain tops. If it wasn't for the odd man made made structure, you could of thought you were in some kind of Jurassic period. It was awesome! After lunch I was back on the dam, and targeting edges again. I got 3 hard hits from fish, all coming from when the lure would swim over the top of large downed trees. I was imagining that they were sitting under the large wooden masses, and charging out as the lure went past. I would pay close attention to these numerous large trees that littered the edge for the rest of the afternoon. As it turns out, I caught another 2 browns off large angled trees, and another off a jumble of submerged branches. As the afternoon wore on, the bite increased...its always the way, just as I have to leave, the fish really turn on I had multiple bumps, and taps, and hooked into, and lost a handful of other fish too. One or two of them were decent specimens! Ohh well, I wasn't too disappointed, what a cracking little session on a magic little system. I'm glad I put in the long hours to get up there, and even though none of the fish were that big, today was one of the most enjoyable sessions I've had in a long time
