25.01.2022 After a new computer? These Mini PCs (aka NUCs), have been around for a good while now and they have much the same features and abilities for most users, than the traditional desktop. Sure theres not enough space in one of these babies for a DVD/CD drive, but who uses them these days? Even those that do, the frequency is probably irregular enough that they can get by with a USB DVD/CD drive and just plug it in when required, then store it away other times. Why take up all ...that extra footprint on your desk/floor when you dont have to, and these NUCs are generally cheaper to run also! They even come with a mounting bracket to mount the baby to the back of your screen so they dont take up any footprint whatsoever, and theyre fully capable of running 2-3 screens, directly out of the box! About the only exception for these are power hungry users like gamers or video editors / graphic designers that may desire powerful (and/or multiple) graphics cards. Outside that, these NUCs can fully provide for most users and uses today! They fit in the palm of your hand and weigh next to nothing also! So think twice next time youre after a new computer. The traditional desktop/tower boxes are (almost), a thing of the past!

24.01.2022 Step 1 - A client in Adelaide receives a Ransomware attack. Step 2 - We discuss options. Step 3 - We decide to replace the main drive with a fresh one and keep the old one aside in case a decryptor ever becomes available.... Step 4 - Customer suggests I send the replacement drive + a Windows 10 Installation set on a USB drive to them and theyll perform the surgery. Step 5 - The client attempts to replace the main drive and proceed with installing Windows 10 on it. Step 6 - Numerous phone calls and problems relating to the computer not starting up properly. Step 7 - We give up and decide for the client to post the computer to me to sort myself. Step 8 - The computer arrives and I begin to look at it. The first thing I notice as I remove the computer from the box, is a rattling noise on the inside. Step 9 - Open it up and locate this rattling noise. It turns out a tiny screw was on the loose inside the chassis. Well done client. Do you realise if this lands on the mainboard or any circuitry, it can create a short circuit and cause havoc / mass destruction!! Step 10 - Remove the loose screw and see how it goes without that object rattling around. Step 11 - Find the computer will now not turn on properly either, it comes on then a second or two later, switches off again, then on again, then off again, repeatedly. Step 12 - Praise the lord that I happen to have an identical power supply unit (PSU) hiding out in the shed from many years ago when I decided to keep one of these particular ones in stock (theyre non-standard size). Pray that it still works. Step 13 - Replace the PSU and find that presto, its all back to working again. This is a sign that the object happened to get in the wrong spot and potentially cause damage to the old PSU. Step 14 - Put the PC all back together and take a fresh attempt at installing Windows and re-configuring it for the client. Step 15 - Success, time to put it back in the box it came in and get it back on the road to Adelaide. Lesson Learnt (For Client) - Its not always a wise idea to think you can do things yourself if its not your field of work. Anything can go wrong along the way without you realising and often it will end up costing you more to then get it sorted by the right person and fix your stuff ups!! Sound familiar Grant Ohlsson ???

24.01.2022 "Attempting" to install 2 new NUC systems at a new psychologists practise, about to open up in Croydon. Computers are working beautifully! The internet on the other hand...... Hell$tra (Telstra), at their best again!... No sync on the line whatsoever it seems. The router wont even let me customise the Wi-Fi settings. It keeps reverting back to the defaults, even after a factory reset. Note the nice microfiber cloth that comes with the router. I think thats to wipe the dust off it as its shelf life is most likely in the years, cause nobody wants them!!!

23.01.2022 Whos familiar with the common I.T. term, BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) ?? Heres 2 different examples of one, followed by a couple of events logged by the computer related to the BSOD incident. More often than not, this is an indication your RAM is shot and needs replacing, that which the last pics demonstrate. ... Customers (and the computers) all again !!

23.01.2022 Time to lay some cable! Hmmmm should I rephrase that??

23.01.2022 Seriously, why do brand new laptops of today still come with traditional hard drives?? What a waste of time & money! SSD drives are more affordable than ever and outperform traditional hard drives by a long shot. If your computers still running on a traditional hard drive, youre living in the past!... Give it a whole new lease on life, with an SSD upgrade. Itll feel like a whole new computer!!

20.01.2022 Good ol Hellstra!!!

19.01.2022 Today's job, assist a warehouse who's cool room temperature monitoring device just can't pickup enough Wi-Fi signal from the nearest Wireless Access Point. Solution? Start off by forgetting those worst ever inventions (wireless extenders) and instead do it the proper way, run an additional network cable to a suitable nearby location to install an additonal hard wired, Wireless Access Point. Hang on, what about the need for power as well? Do we need to get the electrician in as well? Nope! That's where Power over Ethernet (PoE) comes in handy!

17.01.2022 13 days until Windows XP & Office 2003 Support Ends http://conta.cc/OXD82P

16.01.2022 Todays job (one of)! Play with coloured spaghetti till you find the right pair to redirect the fax line to another location round the office. If this is what all Telco wiring looks likes no wonder our communications network here in Australia is so poor!! Job finished, now on to the next one!

16.01.2022 101 Likes! Wow, Thanks for the support. It has been a very busy year so far with over 100 company laptop repairs, 8 custom built business servers and plenty of on site & remote support to our incredible clients across Australia. Can somebody please define "sleep"?

16.01.2022 I have spent a good portion of the last week removing Ransomware from a customers computer whose files got encrypted by the latest Crypto Malware. Its cost them >$1,000 to recover because they didnt have sufficient backups in place and were not vigilant enough in holding back from opening attachments in emails that they didnt know who they were from. It has been a headache from start to finish, so please everybody, be vigilant, do NOT open emails from people you dont kn...ow. Do NOT believe emails that claim to be from people like the police, FedEx etc...Delete them from the word go!! --- Ransomware targeting Australia & New Zealand A new variant of the Crypto Ransomware has begun to spread, targeting Australia and New Zealand. While most malware is detected and identified in more dense areas of the world before it hits Australia and New Zealand, the latest Crypto malware is designed to specifically fool and infect the Oceanic region. Once the virus infects the target machine, it automatically starts to encrypt non-system data, deletes itself from the machine to avoid being identified for later signatures, and sends the decryption key to a remote server in case the customer is willing to pay for decryption. A mixture of End User Education and Bitdefenders Active Virus Control (AVC) is your clients best defence to avoid infection and damage. Since the malware is constantly evolving and its infection target is small, signatures for the variants are not a reliable method of detection. To improve and qualify protection for your clients business we recommend: Active Virus Control (AVC) module is enabled and runs at no lower than Normal (Default) or Aggressive Disable the display of Alert Popups to avoid your end users allowing the execution of Crypto Make use of the free Crypto Vaccine from Bitdefender this runs alongside Bitdefender but doesnt replace the Endpoint Security MOST IMPORTANTLY Educate End Users on safe internet practices! The malware currently relies on human interaction to enter the system Do not: 1) Click on any suspect emails 2) Run ZIPs, EXEs or VBS from emails (especially those unknown) 3) Agree to execute the malware by overriding the Notification Pop Ups which may allow the malware to run for a period of time before the user is supersede. Schedule continuous file backups (either locally or in the cloud) so data can be recovered in case of corruption.

14.01.2022 Long time no speak people!!! Despite the long hiatus on here, Computone has certainly not been at rest over this time. In fact, in January just gone (2019), Computone has hit its "20 Year Milestone!", and still going strong! As everything evolves in this world as we know it, our Computers and I.T. has to keep up with those changes also.... Not keeping up with the changes only leaves you in the lurch, likely to eventually run into incompatibility issues, as well as being more susceptible to undesired attacks and other repercussions. Lets also not forget about one of, if not the worst thing thats ever hit the I.T. world over the last few years, Ransomware. This stuff makes old style viruses and malware look like fun & games! One great innovation that has hit the world over the last 10 years is Microsoft Office 365. Its a much easier way and quite often better for your cash flow, to stay on top of the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook etc). Another feature of Office 365 is an email management system, Exchange Online. This replaces (or co-exists alongside), or is simply instead of, an in-house server managing your domain/companies email system + more. Overall in comparison to an in-house mail server, it is much cheaper to run, easier to manage and is one less thing that can go wrong within your premise. ------ Recently, Computone migrated a rather large company in Melbournes in-house email system to Office 365. There was a total of 51 mailboxes to migrate and the transition was rather seamless for the customer. They already noticed a significant improvement in performance in the first day or two. Now they are able to enjoy much better junk mail filtering, synchronicity between devices, they can decommission their in-house mail server now and save on electricity + more. This week on Wednesday, we will be doing the same operation for a smaller business this time. Tuesday will be the same yet again, for another business yet again, but also smaller again. No matter what size your business, Office 365 is not too out of scope or too much for you to implement. If you wish to find out more, please dont hesitate to ask. www.office.com

13.01.2022 The latest Computone job.

06.01.2022 Safe to say we had a chuckle at this...

06.01.2022 So one of todays jobs was to sort out this server which the customer went into work this morning after the weekend, to find it wasnt booting up properly. It would reach the logon screen shown below and then 20 seconds later, would just reboot at its own accord, every time, without fail. It appears it had been compromised over the weekend and there had been some 3rd party software installed on it to allow remote control.... Thankfully it was a failed attempt which meant the server kept rebooting instead of it staying up for the hacker to remote in after their software made its way onto there. Upon removal of this 3rd party software, manual restoration of numerous Registry Entries which you can see the before & after shots below and a couple of other procedures, the server is back to good health again.

05.01.2022 Whos ready for the Windows 10 Release in 5 days (29th July)?? Have all Windows 7 & 8.1 Users registered for their free upgrade?? Better hurry if not, its only available for 12 months!!

05.01.2022 Wanna know where I got "Access" to this pic?? It was on another FB group called World Of Puns. They were the original "Publisher" of it. They tend to have a very broad "Outlook" on things!!
