12.01.2022 JOHN MARSDENS TIPS FOR PARENTS 1. Give children space. Back off. Let them roam. Let them be bored. Dont over-plan their lives. Cut way back on the after-scho...ol activities programs. 2. Keep away from all those ghastly, soulless, sterile playgrounds. Keep away from shopping malls. Look for real places. Wild places. 3. Be an adult. Say no to your children at least once a day. If the role of Adult in your family is vacant, then one of your children will fill it. And it wont be pretty. 4. Dont take up all the space. If you are dominating, loud, forceful, your children are highly likely to become passive, lacking spirit and personality and/or sullen. 5. Believe about 40 per cent of the dramatic stories your children tell you of the injustices, corruption and satanic practices happening at school. 6. Teach them empathy. For example, after their jubilant victory celebrations when they win a sporting match, remind them that their jubilation was only possible because someone else the losers have been made to feel awful. 7. Help them develop language skills. Dont finish their sentences for them. Dont correct them when they mispronounce a word theyll work it out sooner or later. Ask them open-ended questions, that need a detailed answer, not Yes/No questions. 8. Make sure they have regular jobs/duties at home and that those jobs are done to a consistently high standard. 9. Dont whinge endlessly about the miseries of your adult life. A lot of children now are fearful about growing up because their parents paint such a grim picture of the awfulness ahead. 10. Teach them to be very wary of people who Absolutely Know the Absolute Truth about Absolutely Everything! The colour of truth is always grey. Extreme positions are for the ignorant. Every creature, every person and every situation is complex. The universe is a wonderful mystery.

12.01.2022 We have been out walking in the beautiful Autumn sunshine this week, listening to the crickets sing, discovering dandelion flowers and enjoying the experience of water and mud We value allowing the children time to explore, experience and engage with the kindergarten surrounding environments, the elements and sensory experiences Through risky play, children are able to test their own limits and abilities and get to know themselves and what they can do. This takes focus and persistence and builds resilience, confidence, coping skills, and self-regulation

10.01.2022 To the families. Please note that enrolments for our 4 yr old program for 2020 have now closed. The committee is currently working with the Department of Education to streamline the enrolment process for the future to ensure that all families will have the same enrolment timelines and dates to follow as neighbouring Colac kindergartens. Further information about this process will be communicated in the coming weeks. Thank you.

07.01.2022 I wanted to tell him to hurry up... but I paused and asked instead. His response: I want to see if the vultures think Im a dead animal. I hadnt even noticed... the vultures flying overhead... I was so focused on finishing the task and moving on to the next thing that I was missing everything. How many times in a day do you tell your child to hurry up? Rushing out the door. Get your shoes on. Eat your dinner faster. Walk quicker. Chin up, eyes forward, lets go! Weve got to HURRY.. To where? To what? Do you stop and ask yourself what youre rushing for? What is so important that you are pushing your child so quickly through their childhood? And do you ever wonder why? Why they are moving so slowly. Why they are staring off into space. Well. Did you ever ask? Did you ever just STOP and try to get inside their head? I stopped hurrying. And I asked. And these are just a few of the answers I got: Im counting my peas. (not eating dinner) Im trying to decide which shoes are the best shoes. (taking forever to get shoes on) Im singing to the birds. (lagging behind on a walk) Im watching this worm to see how fast it can dig. (not coming in for a bath) Do you see whats happening here? Our adult brains are conditioned to move so rapidly to hurry as quickly as possible from one activity to the next, always rushing, always thinking about the next thing and never, NEVER paying attention to the current, present, beautiful moment. But our children? They havent been changed yet. Theyre still curious and full of wonder. They still see the beauty in weeds and will take the time to hop over every crack in the sidewalk for miles. And why on earth would we want to do anything but encourage them to keep that passion, that attention to detail, and the ability to SLOW DOWN and just enjoy the world around them? In fact, we can learn a lot from watching our children. From asking ourselves why we are rushing constantly. Why we are so concerned about the next moment instead of focusing on enjoying the present one. Ask yourself. Why? And ask your child. What are we doing in THIS moment? And can I join you? Watch your world change before your eyes. To slowing down.
