10.01.2022 TUESDAY TIP Always check the syringe you are using to give your child medicine as they can be very different! Lots of children’s over the counter medications come with a measuring device, such as the syringe pictured.... These devices can differ between medicines, so always double check where you need to be reading from! #tuesdaytip #medicine #parenting #mumlife #dadlife #parentingtips #parenthood #mum #dad #family #toddler #baby

10.01.2022 TAKE THE HEAD BAND OFF IN THE CARSEAT You may have seen our earlier post on the dangers of headbands on babies (click here if you haven't read it yet: https://bit.ly/3igvldN ) We were asked about the car seat - if bub is still awake, is it ok to leave a headband on?... Definitely not. Why? Because even if bub is awake, the movement of their head can cause the headband (or hat/beanie) to come down over their face, potentially obstructing their nose and mouth. Headbands and other head wear should only be used when they are in your direct line of sight (active supervision) and in arms reach (not in the car!), and never if they are asleep. Tag a friend who needs to be empowered with this knowledge! #headbands #childsafety #firstaid #parenting #parenthood #dad #mum #family #granparent #toddler #baby #babygirl #babyboy #pregnant #babybump #babyshower #babyfood #babyfoodideas #infant

08.01.2022 CHOKING PREVENTION One important thing you can do to reduce the risk of your little one choking is to avoid giving them circular foods that may easily block their airway. Cut up finger foods lengthways, not only are they easier for babies to grip with their palmar grasp, but they are a much better shape to reduce the risk of choking!... Cut the longer foods such as carrots, sausages, cucumbers and bananas into sticks, and round foods such as grapes, cherry tomatoes and large blueberries in quarters. . . . . #chokingprevention #parenthood #firstfoods #weaning #babyfoodideas #babyfood #babyfoodrecipes #mum #dad #mumlife #dadlife #firstaid #babyboy #babygirl #twins #newborn #newmum #newdad #pregnant #preggo #preggers #birth #motherhood #fatherhood #grandmother

04.01.2022 In my first year of being a paediatric emergency nurse, I was involved in a resuscitation of a little boy who pulled a large TV on himself. Tragically, he died. The memory of that little boy and his family have stayed with me through the years. As a nurse, you never forget. Please ask yourself: "Have I secured the furniture and TV in all areas of my home?" Now is the time to make sure your furniture is anchored. ... Here is the story of another little boy who was also tragically killed by toppling furniture - Thank you to his parents for sharing their story. "In August 2016, toddler Blake Shaw was killed when a freestanding bookcase fell on him. As part of a joint campaign between Kidsafe and the ACCC, Blake’s parents, Tim and Kirstie, bravely share their story, providing a tragic reminder to all parents and carers to anchor unstable furniture and TVs." https://youtu.be/X-1_pKF38Y0

03.01.2022 LOOK BEFORE YOU LOCK, EVERY TIME. The temperature inside a parked vehicle on a typical Australian summer day can be up to 30 degrees hotter than the outside temperature. In as little as 5 minutes, the temperature in a vehicle can reach dangerous levels.... The impact of heat on a child's body is almost immediate and can be fatal. Tips for families from the "Look before you Lock" Qld Government website include: Create a 'Look Before You Lock' routine. Building simple steps into your daily routine can help lower the risk of unintentionally leaving a child in a vehicle: Place an item you will need at your destination in the back seat of the car, such as your bag or wallet. Attach a mirror for rear facing car seats so you can easily see your child. Create a mental checklist to run through every time you leave the car, such as 'baby, keys, bag'. Get in the habit of checking your backseat every time you get out of the car. Check even if you know your child is not with you. This will help make looking before you lock part of your normal routine. Look before you lock. Every time. Without fail. Discuss your 'Look Before You Lock' routine with every person who drives your child anywhere. This includes partners, grandparents, babysitters, and friends. Be extra alert if your routine changes. The risk of unintentionally leaving a child increases with a change in routine. Importantly, if you accidentally lock your child in a car or you come across a child left unattended in a vehicle: Keep calm Think clearly and act quickly Call your roadside assistance provider if you have one Call 000 immediately if you have any concerns about the child's health.
