21.01.2022 2 large studies were released today which found that eating a lot of highly-processed foods is associated with an increased risk of heart disease & death from a...ll causes. Hence the dramatic ultra-processed foods will kill you headlines. . Ultra-processed food is defined as is food which is made predominantly or entirely from industrial substances & contains little or no whole foods. These products are ready to eat, drink, or heat. One of the authors of this study said: "if a product contains more than 5 ingredients, it is probably ultra-processed." . Important Considerations: The above definition is fairly broad & could include healthy foods like wholegrain bread, wholegrain crackers, wholegrain cereals, shop-bought hummus and certain yoghurts (all of which are nutritious & convenient options). Context matters: there are plenty of situations where processed foods have a really important role e.g. for some people who have limited cooking skills or equipment, who are short on time or who have a physical disability. We need to think about the WHY with nutrition, not just the WHAT - this involves tackling the social reasons of why groups of people need to rely on processed food (e.g. finances, access, equipment, education etc). Food processing can be really important for food safety & can make food more nutritious by fortifying it with specific nutrients. Over the years this has also played a big role in liberating women from time consuming food prep (which contributed to being able to work outside the home). . So What Should We Take From This? . It is healthiest for most of our diet to be made up of less processed foods like fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, nuts, seeds, milk, natural yoghurt, eggs, fresh fish and meat etc. . BUT that doesnt mean that all processed foods are bad - so these should be chosen on a case by case basis. You can look at the label & choose options with less sugar, salt & saturated fat most of the time, but nothing needs to be off-limits completely & we shouldnt associate guilt with anything that we eat. 13.01.2022 This is always worth sharing again and again!!

12.01.2022 I was chatting to someone the other day, and it was a very warm day. She said, I would never subject anyone to seeing my legs in shorts - I have the knees of a front row forward (I've yet to meet any woman that likes her knees), and cankles. It made me think how many of us refuse to acknowledge all the good things our body can do for us, instead of resorting to pointing out all our faults. I'm no different. When was the last time that you were grateful for all the amazing things your body can do? And conversely, when did you last indulge in some critical self talk?

12.01.2022 This is quite amazing data. For years everyone has assumed that more cardio was the way to go, however, recently we are seeing more and more data to suggest that lifting weights is much more beneficial.

10.01.2022 Hearing so much about Game Changers, so here is some food for thought https://www.biolayne.com//the-game-changers-review-a-scie/

09.01.2022 Do you eat enough protein? How do you know how much you should be eating anyhow? Quite often when I ask people if they eat enough protein most people will say, yes, I eat some at lunch or dinner.. but when you investigate further, their diets are generally lacking in this important macronutrient. If you arent consistently tracking what you are eating, then I urge you to start doing this. Its pretty simple to do, particularly using something like MyFitnessPal. You can then c...lick on the nutrients button st the end of each day and click on the macros to see what your diet consists of. The link below gives you an idea of how much you should be consuming and why ..

09.01.2022 If you prefer to be better informed about diet fads, before jumping right in and spending hideous amounts on supplements etc, then this is worth a read. You can skim through and find some interesting points or you can get your brain geared up and go more in depth.

07.01.2022 Ive seen a lot of typical scaremongering posts designed to buy certain products lately. They all have the same approach designed to scare you into buying them. The first one is designed to make you aware of how bad free radicals and oxidative stress are and that you must buy their product to combat that.... Weeellll noooooo.. read in all about oxidative stress and what you need to do with your diet to improve this. https://www.healthline.com/health/oxidative-stress

07.01.2022 Food intolerances and allergies. It seems that nowadays there are so many types of foods that seem to be creating intolerances and allergies. Do you have any foods that cause some type of negative reaction? Do you even pay attention?... I never used to, but now when I think back, so many foods used to make my stomach gurgle, my nose runny or my throat phlegmy. More recently I have noticed arthritis forming in my fingers - the joys of getting older - so I decided to implement some auto immune paleo principles into my eating to see if something that I was eating was enhancing the inflammation. This means eliminating quite a few things (you can read about it here: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/320195.php). Fast forward a week and we decide to grab some leftovers out of the freezer for dinner - on this occasion - spaghetti bolognese. Completely forgetting my AIP eating . I woke up during the night with the worst coughing fit, my eyes were gunky and today I feel like my inner ear is inflamed, blocked and the worst tinnitus. So - lesson learned - tomatoes and wheat are a definite no no for me!! Do you have foods that do this to you ??
