09.01.2022 Here is a little back story from After the Bump Child Health This is me! Feels like a lifetime ago. 21yrs old and expecting my first baby. I wanted to write this post to give you a little insight on the WHY behind After The Bump. As a Registered Nurse Id always planned to specialise in paediatrics, become a Midwife or a Maternal Child Health Nurse. Its strange to think that Bump is now in the final months of High school, learning to drive and I am so proud. ... Looking back, the first few months as a new mum are a bit of blur. One memory that had always stood out and that was my interactions with the midwives at the hospital and the follow up with a Child Health Nurse when my son was about 6 weeks old. In hospital when the Midwives entered my room, they would often refer to me "the young one", many assumed the dad wasnt around until my now Husband would reappear from a short walk of the ward. At his six week visit, my memories are of feeling judged for my age, assumptions about my ability to care for my new baby financially and of leaving feeling uncertain about myself as a mother. Now who knows if that is 100% accurate but it doesnt matter, what matters is how I felt as a new mum. From that day I barely left the house unless it was with my partner and in hindsight have no doubt I suffered from Postnatal Depression. THIS is my WHY! That day I knew that when I finished my Maternal & Child Health qualifications, one day I wanted to create the supportive Child Health Service the young mum in that picture needed. Even as I write this, I get teary thinking about me back then. If I could tell the mum in that picture one thing it would be "You got this!"
