25.01.2022 This is a collaborative workpiece that Stephanie Ryan and I shared. Steph carved the lizards and the nest of eggs. Her attention to detail was superb, as you can see. The meandering pathway, complete with footprints and tail trail, tells its own story. When you open the lids (using the lizards as handles), you are rewarded with a lovely surprise. I've used Zebrano, Blue Gum and Ebony timbers, while Steph carved her work from Sandalwood, later stained. Design is such a vital aspect of woodworking and I must acknowledge my partner's (Hilary) assistance in getting it just right. I think it's vital to have an artistic director with whom I share ideas and seek inspiration.

24.01.2022 Hi Everyone. I've been a busy boy but still managed to do a bit of turning; playing with a bit of wire embedding. Cheers

23.01.2022 Hello everyone. Thank you all for viewing my new facebook page and for the feedback I received. Several of you asked for some pictures that show the stages of production of my boxes. I have plenty of pics and I'll start including them in the future. Before I do that I will show you a pic of the 4 trophies that I have won at the Perth Wood Shows. These are highly sought after as they are beautifully made works of art and it's considered to be a real treat to have at least one hanging on the wall. Warwick Backhouse from Northcliffe, WA creates them using local timbers and his creative genius. Check them out

22.01.2022 I've been doing a bit of wood turning lately and thoroughly enjoying the experience. Some of my box-making buddies have said I've turned to the dark side, but they're still good buddies :) Today, I am showing you a pic of my pair of goblets. These are segmented and constructed with Jarrah and Walnut. Lots of fun and a great learning experience. These got a first place in the Wood Turning category at this year's Perth Wood Show and also first place at the WA Woodturners Assoc monthly workshop.

22.01.2022 Thank you to all my friends and family who have enlisted on my new facebook page, Designs in Wood. I will be adding new posts showing my work when time permits. This is just a taster :)

19.01.2022 I've been busy with a few new creations for the Perth Wood Show. I'll show you some now and some in a few days. Hope you like what I've done :) The first is an embellished Vase made from Cape Lilac

18.01.2022 This was entered in the Box category at the show. Made from Sheoak with aluminium inserts and magnets that made the lid locate perfectly every time. It's finished with spray lacquer and rubbed back with Carnauba wax.

18.01.2022 This was my first entry into a WAWA competition. (came First in Novice) Tiger Maple with Jarrah stringers.

18.01.2022 This is my competition piece that I was planning to use at the prestigious International Symposium for Woodturners in June 2020 in Louisville, Kentucky, where baseball is extremely popular. This is an annual event conducted by the American Assoc of Woodturners (cancelled this year). The theme was Step Up To The Plate, Second Innings. I called my piece Second Innings, Two Down, Loaded Bases. My piece depicts huge tension in a game when a ball is pitched at a high speed and suf...fers incredible distortion when met with a bat that has been swung so hard that it flexes and breaks. The shape and carving of the flames have been inspired by Neil Turner's work, made in two pieces, one sassafras and one sandalwood. It has been airbrushed with three colours. The ball was made from Chinese Tallow, hollowed out on a lathe, dremelled, and double-threaded with red thread. The bat was made from Oregon, wire brushed and lacquered. It was turned in a Vicmarc offset chuck. The base depicts the Homeplate and is made from Western Australian Sheoak. The AAW has since decided to display their competition entries in their Gallery of Wood, so now my work is on its way to the USA. See more

17.01.2022 This is a box that I built for my sister-in-law, Janet, (hence the initials) when she had a big birthday in 2016. Janet is a kiwi so I thought she'd like some Paua shell in the box's decorative banding. The box carcase has been constructed using MDF because it is stable and not affected by changes in the moisture of the atmosphere (whereas a box made from solid timber can self-destruct if not built to cope with atmospheric changes). A ripple grained mahogany veneer (0.6mm thick) has been glued to the MDF to add beauty.

17.01.2022 This is a recent piece I created for a competition in Perth. It is a hollow form with Banksia nut embedded. 115 mm Dia.

15.01.2022 This is a natural edged bowl made from Mulberry timber.

13.01.2022 Built in 2015, this box was constructed from MDF with American Rock Maple veneer. The on-lays are Hairy Barked Oak (that I managed to scrounge while touring through Queensland) and are edged with a pyropen. The hinges are finger jointed Rock Maple with a 2.5mm Dia aluminium

13.01.2022 This is a natural edged vase made from Mulberry. It stands 275mm tall with a wall thickness of 5mm. It was hollowed from the bottom first.

12.01.2022 Hi All. Sorry, I haven't posted anything for months but we've been travelling. Today, I am showing you my box called "Box of the Sea Dragon". It has an oriental style to it which evolved as it was constructed. I was lucky to receive feedback from several friends who gave their opinions on finishing touches, such as the dragon and the decoration on top. I recommend that anyone who builds anything, turns to friends for artistic interpretation and guidance. This helps enormously towards creating a piece that has well designed features. This box received first prize in the Box Category at this year's Perth Wood Show

11.01.2022 This is a bowl I recently entered in a WA Woodturners Assoc competition. It has been made using Jacaranda Timber, and embellished using a mixture of spray paints and then the circular patterns created using a Nova Ornamental Turning jig

07.01.2022 Hi All, This is a Vortex Bowl that I turned from a piece of Conifer. It's about 150mm diameter. This week at the Melville Woodturners' Club in Perth, members will each be turning one similar and then exploring ways of improving the overall design by removing some of the rim. These will take a couple of weeks to complete so I'll show you some of the results soon. Cheers Denis.

07.01.2022 This piece titled "Settled By The Pond" was entered in the Wood Show this year in the category called "Collaboration" as it was designed and built by two people - well, actually, it was designed by 3 people as Hilary is my Artistic Director who always helps me with designing. My fellow collaborator was Stephanie Ryan who loves carving wood. She gave me the 2D dragon fly pierced design on plywood which you can see mounted with a mirror backing. Hilary and I decided on the pond... scene with reeds. I turned the back board from Liquid Amber timber then used a router to create the 3 distant looking reeds seen as vee grooves. The hole was then cut for the dragon fly plywood piece. The other reeds are made from Tiger Maple with brass insets along the lengths. Some were finished flush with the Liquid Amber while others were left raised to create a 3D effect. When Stephanie saw this as a work-in-progress, she suggested adding 2 more dragon flies made 3D. Great idea! She carved the 2 dragon flies and added wire legs which we embedded onto the reeds by drilling tiny diameter holes and securing with epoxy adhesive. She also suggested we call it "Kakadu" as she could see a crocodile in the bottom left portion. We loved the name but had already submitted the entry form. We were awarded 3rd place in the competition as there were many pieces of a very high quality. Stephanie had also collaborated with other people and she took out 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. She is very talented. See more

06.01.2022 Hi All This is a jewellery box that I have made for my granddaughter. She asked for a hidden compartment to be included in the design. The release is operated by lifting the internal end panel. It has a dowel on the underside which dislocates when the end panel is lifted. A coil spring is in the end of the opening that houses the drawer and this pushes out the drawer when released. The box carcase, measuring 300 x 200 x 125mm, is made from MDF, and veneered with several diffe...rent and contrasting timber veneers. Locking mitre joints were used on all 4 corners while a plain mitre joint was used to secure the lid to the sides. Epoxy glues were used on all joints and PVA for the veneers. The internal frame, the drawer and the lift-out tray are all constructed from Rock Maple and the dark coloured timber around the base is Jam Wood. It has been finished with lacquer and the deep rich brown soft linings are velvet. All up, it took me over 60 hours to construct. Hope she likes it! See more

02.01.2022 The light coloured timber is Jacaranda and the inserts are from Walnut in this bowl with an offset opening.
