20.01.2022 Early morning practice. I committed to my full practice - up to bhujipidasana - but right from the beginning I was thinking to practice in such a way that it wasnt too taxing, that it wasnt too strenuous, that it didnt ask too much of me. To practice like I wasnt practising. At which point it became ridiculous. Like you can move through life without any stress or strain or sweat. That you can somehow get let off the hook so that youre not touched by the world. Anyway, I made it here and then to backbends and closing. I had to turn on the light for this video; it was still dark outside. 15.01.2022 A little update on my bhujapidasana journey, which I have redone tonight because my phone conked out during this mornings practice. A little while ago, I set myself a goal to achieve bhujapidasana in 4 weeks. Hahahahahahaha. What was I thinking? Its like saying I will achieve completion of grief within 2 weeks at which point I will move on with my life. Or, I will become enlightened by 6 months time. You can do the work as wholeheartedly as you like. And you should. You mu...st. But you dont control the timing. And you dont control what the outcome looks like. I injured myself immediately after setting that goal and didnt even attempt the sequence for more than 4 weeks. I am only just bringing consistency to half primary series after returning to ashtanga at the beginning of iso. My body is still not conditioned to practising 6 days a week, so I intersperse my practice with a shortened format. Other asanas have raised their hand for my attention during that time and it has been a huge pleasure to follow their lead. (The body is always telling you what its ready for are you listening?) In ashtanga practice you have to strive, but striving wont get you there. You have to meet your striving with acceptance. You have to put down the scorecard. Celebrate the seemingly minute changes, like increased effortlessness where youre at. Like that you even got on the mat, thereby developing an internal rigour that you cant buy, and that you cant earn by skipping steps. 12.01.2022 Tonights practice consisted of pausing to tend this ones skun knee, then later to help with her homework, then again to set my little patient up on the sofa with blanket, teddy, books, etc. The ashtanga method consists of 6 increasingly challenging series, and what is affectionately referred to as seventh series - parenthood and family life. When I met my husband and had my children my physical practice completely disappeared. Vanished into thin air. I couldnt figure how to make the practice I once had fit with the new family life I created. It shows me all the places I am underdeveloped, and hands them to me at the same time - strength, resilience, dedication. People mostly say to me, oh I cant do yoga because Im not flexible. It is probably more relevant to the practice to say- oh, I cant do yoga because I fear the unknown and Im not brave. 08.01.2022 TBH, I need the discipline of ashtanga practice. I need someone/thing to tell me - You practice 6 days a week! You do these postures! Dont do those postures! Eat this! Dont eat that! Etc etc. I like how the structure takes the guesswork out of it. I appreciate that theres little room for my unhelpful tendencies to, essentially, slack off forever. For the most part, we are addicted to the idea of and the chase for comfort. So no yoga teacher is going to tell you Yoga is a hard, demanding lifelong practice that you will never master! 06.01.2022 Tonight I reflected as I often often do these days, what makes this practice holy? Of course I know in theory - marry the mind to the breath, the body to the breath, bhandas, drishti, ujjayi, look look inside. And I know the possibility because I used to take a bit for granted that unmatched experience of being fully present as the body moves in its slow meditation. But the truth is, I havent been feeling it. Not for a long time. And I have to know, if Im going to share it,... where is the magic? Where did it go? I stood at the top of my mat tonight and asked myself, what makes this practice holy? And I realised, I dont know anymore. So I just began to move. And then my hamstrings opened up in uttanasana so that my belly juuusst touched my thighs for the first time in a very long time. And then my calves opened up in adho mukha svanasana and my heels touched the mat for the first time literally ever. Something I respect deeply - the body tells the truth. It looks how it looks, regardless of how you might like it to. It does what it can do despite you may want it to do much much more. Your belly doesnt touch your thighs until it does. Your heels dont reach the mat until they can. Its just that. The holiest thing I know is honesty. I remember my husband saying early-ish on in our relationship, when we were still getting to know each other, and I had had a bit of a meltdown over something or other - I thought you had your shit together? This modified Parivritta Parsvakonasana or revolved side angle posture is currently one of the most physically challenging parts of my practice. It takes alot of strength.
