25.01.2022 In the next edition of Premiership Throwbacks, we head back to the 1979-1980 season where the club pulled off a memorable comeback to claim its fifth 1st Grade premiership. The pre-season saw state players Gary Goodman and Rowan Sherriff come to the Oval, giving the team a formidable line-up. At the end of the roster season, Devonport had finished on top of the ladder and booked a semi-final with Yeoman, who put the pressure on with a handy score of 269 despite Sherriffs hau...l of 6-70. In reply Devonport cruised past the total with five wickets in hand thanks to 94 from Kevin Pearce and an unbeaten 63 from Colin Arnold. A week later Devonport met Burnie in the grand final and made life hard for themselves when chasing 265 (Chris Dell 5-61), they crumbled to 7-76. But a defiant knock of 89 not out from Arnold and 39 from Sherriff gave the team some hope as the they ended day two at 8-205, with the pair adding 107 for the 8th wicket. The next Saturday saw Arnold continue his superb innings, eventually finishing on 146, and with assistance from David Mullett (27) at the other end, Devonport grabbed an invaluable first innings lead of 28 runs as they were bowled out for 293. Burnie declared its second innings at 5-137 in search of an unlikely outright win, but Devonport were up to the task, reaching the target with six wickets in hand. The grand final will also be remembered for an iconic photo of Arnold being chaired off the ground by Sherriff and Kevin Dudman after his match-winning performance. See more

25.01.2022 After a week off, Premiership Throwbacks return for another edition! Tonight we take a look at the 1980-1981 1st Grade team that secured back-to-back flags for the club. The roster season was hard work for Michael Enrights team at times, and they finished fourth on the ladder to set up a semi-final against minor premiers Yeoman. Things started well for Devonport in the semi-final, bowling Yeoman out for 183, but a collapse with the bat saw them in danger of bowing out at 7-1...05. However with No. 4 Dale OHalloran (65) still at the crease, and great resistance from Enright (52no), the pair added valuable runs and took the team to first innings victory. In the decider, it was that man Colin Arnold who led the way again with the bat. Arnold (89) combined with Warren Squibb (45no) for a 88-run stand that took the team past Burnies first innings of 251 and on to a final score of 5-310 before the game was called off. Earlier, John McKenzies 5-63 led Devonport with the ball. See more

We would like to advise our members and supporters that the position has now been filled and would like to welcome aboard life member and former club coach Stephen Lee to the role. Congratulations on the appointment, Gyps.

24.01.2022 UPDATE We're still looking for someone to help Coley out on Saturday up at Sheffield. Yes, it's not the most glamorous job in the world, but it is an essential one to make a game of cricket tick properly. It's an even easier job being the visiting team and Coley will have the laptop set up for you and instructions on what to do. Hit him up via facebook or get in touch with him on 0408 596 696 if you help out.

24.01.2022 Weve all been there, havent we?

23.01.2022 Well well well, look who took out the NWFL Women's best and fairest award last night. Our very own Meg Graham!!!! Well done on a fantastic season

23.01.2022 WOMENS PRE-SEASON ANNOUNCEMENT!!!! After a great rise up the ladder last season and making finals, our Inspirations Paint Orions womens team are ready to go again for another campaign. Pre-season training begins on Friday, September 11 at 6pm at the DCC Indoor Centre under returning coach Samuel Fogg. All current and new players are welcome to attend. Get in touch with Foggy if you have any queries.

23.01.2022 The redevelopment of our clubrooms continued on Sunday when we installed new ceiling tiles to replace the existing ones that were pretty old and tired. A huge thanks to Hydro Tasmania who generously provided funding for the project through their COVID-19 Community Grants, which have assisted numerous community groups around the state like ours.

23.01.2022 Our 1st Grade team is after a bit of possible help ahead of Saturday's opening round game at Launceston. Our scorer, Brad Cole, may not be available to make the trip and fulfil his duties, so is there anyone that was planning to head up to watch, that can be on standby for him? Unfortunately he probably can't let you know if you are needed until Saturday morning around 7-7.30am.

22.01.2022 It all starts again on Tuesday in the freshly renovated Indoor Centre!

21.01.2022 A post from one our life members, Michael Maney: RIP Paddy Martin. For those at the club now that may not realise, Paddy was a staunch supporter of our club. Whenever we needed someone to come in and deliver some "tough direct advice", Paddy would be our go to man.( Chris Dell will attest to this!) He was so knowledgeable on any sport, and genuinely cared about everyone involved in it. A cricket tribunal chief for the NWTCA for many years, he dished out sensible penalties, wa...rnings and encouragement to many. So many will reflect on how they bought their first pair of spikes, runners, footy or soccer boots and plenty more from his Sports Store in the 4 Ways. He would purchase your old second hand stuff, give you a discount on some new ones, and you walked out of there feeling good. He will be missed. I had a photo of Paddy sent to me a few months ago, as I was hoping he would attend a footy reunion. A Tasmanian Sporting Treasure gone but never forgotten. See more

21.01.2022 DCC Premiership Throwbacks return as look we look at the great teams in club history that claimed the ultimate prize. Tonight we wind the clock back to the 1985-86 season when the 1st Grade side made it back-to-back titles. The David Mullett-captained team finished on top of the ladder at the end of the regular season to book a semi-final against Burnie. Batting first, Devonport made a good start thanks to Brian Robinson (56) and 45 from Phillip Loone, but fell away after tha...t to be bowled out for 220. However thanks to 4-63 from Chris Dell, they were always in control with the ball and dismissed Burnie for 171. Devonports grand final opponents were Yeoman, the same team they defeated the previous season, and the match ran along similar lines. A century from Gary Goodman (115), and contributions from Kevin Pearce (79), Robinson (50) and Loone (36) helped Devonport reach an imposing 8-413 before its compulsory declaration on day two. In reply, the Yeoman batsmen had no answer for Rowan Sherriff, with the former Sheffield Shield paceman taking the wickets of several key Yeoman players to finish with figures of 5-51 and bowl the opposition out for 153. Devonport ended the game at 4-103 in its second innings to claim its eighth flag in the premier grade. In team that was loaded with club legends, the standouts for the season were Kevin Pearce (720 runs @ 65.45), Phillip Loone (526 runs @ 30.94), Gary Goodman (523 runs @ 74.71), Chris Dell (402 runs @ 30.92 & 37 wickets @ 16.97), Michael Maney (24 wickets @ 18.20) and Rowan Sherriff (21 wickets @ 24). To underline that class, seven batsmen in the premiership team scored over 300 runs for the season. See more

19.01.2022 Premiership Throwbacks are back and tonight we take a look at the all-conquering 1984-85 1st Grade team that was led by Graham Mansfield, who had come to the club the season before. The team finished the roster season on top of the ladder thanks to big seasons with the bat from Kevin Pearce, Phillip Loone and Colin Arnold (all over 600 runs), while the bowling attack had the likes of Chris Dell, Michael Maney, Pearce and Mansfield all take over 20 wickets. In the semi-finals,... a superb spell of 7-51 from Dell helped bowl Ulverstone out for just 140 in a rain-affected game. Devonport reached 4-133 when the game ended and progressed to the grand final thanks to its higher ladder position. In the decider against Yeoman, who defeated them the year before, the opening pair of Loone (98) and Brian Robinson (95) gave Devonport the ideal start, putting on 156 for the first wicket. That was built on through the middle order thanks to contributions from Pearce (47) and Maney (71), which gave the team an imposing final total of 9-424 at the compulsory declaration point. Dell then continued his fine bowling form from the semi-final, taking 4-38 by stumps on day two to reduce Yeoman to 5-59. The third and final day saw Yeoman eventually all out for 202 (Dell 5-65) before Devonport batted out the game to reach 5-247 (Pearce 55no) and claim the title. See more

15.01.2022 While we all wait for cricket to resume, were going to take a look back at some of our club history, starting with our premiership teams. All up the club has been lucky enough to have won 13 1st Grade flags over the history of NWTCA/CNW, with the first one coming in the 1956-1957 season. Captained by Joe Crawford, the 56-57 team gained its success with an outright win over a Yeoman side who had dominated the early years of Coastal cricket. They took a 55-run lead into the s...econd innings, and only needed 75 for the win when they bowled Yeoman out for 129 thanks to 7-59 from Peter Lyons. There were a few nervous moments in the chase, but the team reached the target with six wickets in hand. As you can see, the premiership picture has seen better days. If anyone knows of anyone who may have a version that is in better condition, please let us know and we will try to arrange a copy. See more

14.01.2022 Well done Martina Steven!!!!!!

14.01.2022 If you didn't see Saturday's edition of The Advocate, you missed a little yarn on our new recruit Jona Watts, who's also helping us out with our pitches this season. https://www.theadvocate.com.au//watts-finding-his-feet-a/

To help with making the day run smoothly, we are also seeking a couple more volunteers to help out our crews on the 8am-11am shift and the 11am-2pm shift. 08.01.2022 NEWS NEWS NEWS!!!!! The Giant Devonport Orions are proud to announce their first lot of coaching appointments for the 2020-2021 CNW season. Returning to take charge of the senior mens squad is Matthew Bennett. Matthew helped take the club to a State T20 flag in February, had the 1st Grade team well-placed for a finals run in the CNW 1st Grade comp before it was abandoned and helped 2nd Grade to a flag. Great to have you back on board, Matty. Senior wicketkeeper and top-order... batsman, Tyler Dell, has also been confirmed as one of Bennetts assistants. Our senior womens program will see Samuel Fogg take the reins again. Under Foggs guidance, our Womens 1st Grade team finished on top of the ladder at the end of the roster season before unfortunately going down to eventual premiers Sheffield in a tense semi-final. Im sure Foggy, along with the rest of the playing group are keen for their season to go one game longer next season. More coaching announcements and off-season news to come soon!

05.01.2022 Our next look back at our club history focuses on the 1966-67 1st Grade premiership team. The club had to wait 10 years between drinks after its success in 56-57, and held the cup aloft by captain Harold Allen thanks to a first innings win over Ulverstone. Batting first, Devonport made 9-264 before declaring with Kevin Browns 90 in five hours leading the way, along with 50s from Murray Harman and Don Fawkner. A newcomer to the team, Warren Squibb starred with the ball in the Ulverstone reply, taking 6-69 to help dismiss them for 206. Devonport batted out the game to finish at 5-40 and hoist the trophy. The win was made even more meritorious by the fact the team finished fourth on the ladder after the roster season and took down minor premiers Yeoman in the semi-final.

Unfortunately due to all the problems going on in the world, the team has been unable to receive their shiny new equipment, but that all changed last Thursday when four players from our squad popped into the Best Street dealership of our great sponsors Devonport & Burnie Toyota to pick it all up along with members of Ulverstone and Latrobe CCs. A huge thank you to Toyota Australia for its wonderful support of cricket in this country and we look forward to putting all the gear to good use during the 2020-2021 season and beyond.

03.01.2022 Welcome to the third of our premiership flashbacks. Tonight we look at the 1967-1968 1st Grade premiership side that secured back-to-back flags for the club after its success in 1966-1967. Once again the team was captained by Harold Allen, and at the end of the roster season they finished second behind Ulverstone. The semi-finals saw the team defeat Yeoman to set up another showdown with Ulverstone, who they defeated the previous season. Devonport batted first in the grand fi...nal, and thanks to 95 from Des Bligh at No. 7 and 85 from Alan Carey, the team compiled a healthy total of 9-318. For the second grand final in a row, Warren Squibb dominated with the ball, this time taking 7-20 to skittle Ulverstone for just 93. Rain took some time out of the game, with Ulverstone only able to reach 5-41 before the game came to an end and the celebrations begun at the Devonport Oval. See more

01.01.2022 DCC premiership flashbacks return tonight as we continue to take a look back at the great teams of the clubs that claimed the ultimate prize. Tonights we focus on the 1975-1976 1st Grade team that took out the clubs fourth flag in that division. It was a side that was chock full of club greats at varying stages of their careers, with the season seeing the debut games of David Mullett, Colin Arnold and Kevin Pearce. Harold Allen was captain-coach and Warren Squibb his deputy... on the field. Devonport finished third at the end of the home and away season, setting up a semi-final with Penguin which they won easily. In the decider, a five-wicket haul to Allen and three wickets to Chris Collins saw Burnie bowled out for 133. In reply, Devonport dominated with the bat, with Arnold (51) and Kevin Matthews (72) and Dale OHalloran (61no) leading the way as the team reached 2-214 at stumps. The second day was washed out, but the result was already in the bag. See more
