15.01.2022 The corona virus is absolutely destroying lives in China at the moment and hearts are breaking all around the world I don’t want to make light of or compare a s...ituation to someone losing a loved one, but I just wanted to shed some light on how the situation in China is affecting countries all around the world . I am granddaughter, daughter, sister and wife of long term fisherman. I wouldn’t say I’m a full bottle on the ins and outs of Crayfishing, but I know enough to feel that I can share mine and many others current situations. In a nutshell the fishing industry went from $100 per kg to $0 per kg overnight only 2 weeks into the 2020 season. What people don’t realise is that over 90% of the Western Rock Lobster market is sold to China and with major cities over there in lock down and all flights being cancelled in and out the fishery has come to a complete holt. Our crayfish aren’t sold to China because we want it to go there it’s just all supply and demand. Just in LANCELIN alone this means around 20 boats, housing 2-3 crew plus a skipper, are left without work, stressing about how to pay their rent/mortgages, skippers and owners worrying about pot license payments and having the total fear of the unknown. As I sat down the beach today watching my son at swimming lessons I just wanted to cry seeing all the boats bringing their pots in having no idea when they would be able to put them back in the water. Growing up there was a real stigma about cray fisherman being rich and I vividly remember people saying wow you guys must be loaded when even as a kid I knew that that was far from the truth. So when people comment on posts about the crayfish price dropping saying well good, at least we will be able to afford them now just remember that there are fisherman out there hunting for new jobs in small towns and their stress levels are at their peak! So the best advise I can give is just be kind, you don’t know what others are going through and some are very good at hiding it. If you know of a fisherman looking for work, let them know of anything that’s available. If you see a fisherman around, discreetly ask them if they are ok! With it still being peak season of catching, Robe and it’s ...fishing industry is at a standstill. What can we do?? Head down to Sky Seafoods, purchase fresh cooked crays direct. Head out to local restaurants, cafes and pubs that have amazing specials on the menu’s and have a feast. Buy a few and pop in the freezer for later! Gift them to friends and family... Support the industry that supports our town and its community, and this means they’ll still be here to supply next season! See more
