24.01.2022 International Overdose Awareness Day is a time for us to reflect on the high number of people who lose their lives to overdose and remember loved ones lost to overdose. It is a time to encourage our community to talk openly about this issue, and to see what we can do to help reduce overdose deaths and the stigma experienced by individuals and families in our community who are impacted by overdose. Many more people lose their lives to overdose than die on our roads! Overdo...se deaths are preventable. If you or someone you love is affected by prescribed or non-prescribed drug use, today is the perfect time to reach out to a support service in your community. Most overdoses are accidental. You dont need to use a lot of one drug to overdose the risk of overdose increases when you use a combination of prescription drugs or illicit drugs, including when this is combined with alcohol. It is important to discuss the prescribed or non-prescribed medications or illicit drugs you are taking with your health care provider, and to request your GP prescribes Naloxone if they are prescribing you or someone you care for, opiate medications, such as Oxycontin, Endone or Morphine. International Overdose Awareness Day is a timely reminder for everyone to have Naloxone on hand. This especially includes individuals who are at risk of experiencing or witnessing an opiate overdose. It is better to be safe than sorry Naloxone nasal spray is easy to administer, it has no adverse effects and cannot be misused. If you think someone may have overdosed, call an ambulance and administer Naloxone if you have it at hand. Naloxone and education on how to use it can be obtained free of charge through Civic and Phillip NSPs and through CAHMA and Hepatitis ACT, via participating pharmacies. You can also purchase it over the counter at your local pharmacy, however it is more expensive without a script. Having pill/drug testing facilities available would also help to reduce the risk of unintentional overdose. #EndOverdose Pictured: Directions' Needle & Syringe Program Coordinators, Tammy & Mitch
