25.01.2022 Workshop scene week before Christmas

24.01.2022 Not real captivating viewing but this has been the view through my helmet for the last two days.

23.01.2022 Was looking back at the earlier period of the red Torana restoration and came across a walk around of the Torana immediately after Sandblasting was completed. For those interested in the process of a true ground up restoration you may find it interesting. These cars are now worth serious money and they simply require a full tear down and build from the bare bones.

23.01.2022 These were the top six cars chosen by the judges out of the 24 superstars contenders that the XP was part of. The FX ute was the grand champion with the Cortina second. Interesting to note that the XR falcon crowned Summernats grand champion 2018 in 4 months ago was obviously also included in the the top 24 superstars in the country didn't get into the top super six finalist. Everyone including the organisers said that this was by far the highest quality field of cars assembled in Motor Ex history. So I certainly picked a good year to mix it with the best show cars Australia has to offer.

22.01.2022 The 37 Chev pickup has had a fair bit done to it since the last post. The cab and chassis has been sandblasted and epoxy primed. The new floor welded in along with the new lower rear cab wall. The cowl vent has been removed and filled with new metal. The cowl sides and firewall has been hand formed and welded in. The customer is wanting a flush fit windscreen look. All new windscreen metalwork has been formed and fitted so that there is a consistent recess for the glass and s...ealant which allows for a nice moulding edge between glass and bodywork. When removing the original windscreen opening we knew there was a lot of factory lead in this area. What we didn’t know was how bad the factory metal joints were under the lead. A decision was made to remove all the factory metal joints that was hidden by this lead. New metal was wheeled to enable all these joints to be metal finished. A lot of work both on the outside and inside of the window opening. By doing all this has made for a completely new and rust free window opening that will look great when the new custom glass is eventually fitted. See more

22.01.2022 The new floor for the 37 Chev has been fabricated along with a new slim fitting transmission tunnel. As there isn’t much room in these cabs, space is at a premium. The wire wall that had been already fitted to this cab will need to come out as it was made to suit a transmission tunnel that was far to high and intrusive. A new rear cab lower skin has also been rolled out to complete all the rusted and damaged areas of this cab.

21.01.2022 For the first time in 107 years the rotunda at Burra has left the town for a restoration holiday down at Eudunda. Thanks Wade Whitehead and Sheldon Scholz for the help in getting it removed in two days.

21.01.2022 Arkaroola pool all finished and cleaned out ready for the next stage of fibreglass repairs and re gel coating. It’s been a hard but rewarding job. The owners and the staff here at the village are great people.

21.01.2022 Started the restoration of a 1917 Krupp 80mm cannon. It was made in Germany and used against our soldiers during WW1. It and its crew was eventually overpowered on the 8th of August 1918. This cannon was then captured as a souvenir and along with other captured war items was sent back home to Australia where these pieces of equipment were distributed out to towns and regions that had sent larger numbers of men to the war, many of which made the ultimate sacrifice. This cannon... ended up at Burra town square where it stayed for many years. It was moved around the town to several different sites before disappearing from Burra for many years. In 2016 it was located and a deal was struck to have the cannon returned to Burra if it was given a restoration to preserve it for future generations to see and remember its importance in our history. I will keep updating photo and explanations as we get further into its restoration. See more

20.01.2022 Next truck restoration is in the workshop. This time we have a Flintstone Mack from the mid 1970s, it is the last of the steel dash cabs that Mack built. This cab is showing signs of rusting from the inside out, there is going to be a fair amount of outer skin removal to Sandblast and clean all the structural framework as well as both surfaces of the skins. This is the third truck restoration we have been involved with for this Adelaide Hills customer, with the last truck winning him several awards including truck of the show last year. Will update photos as we progress further with this project.

20.01.2022 All packed and ready for the Melbourne Motor Ex.

20.01.2022 At last the Burra Rotunda is finished, only thing left to do is mount some balustrade between some of the post and fit the down pipe when the Council gives the go ahead. Some before and after shots to show the difference a full restoration makes to a building like this

19.01.2022 Soul Red SLR5000 walk around. No sound. Best to let the video tell the story, not me.

19.01.2022 Another current project started this week is this 1937 Chevrolet which the customer is wanting into a cool LS1 powered hot rod pickup. Stripped the chassis of all unwanted hardware and have started mocking up the body to the chassis over the wheels. Measurements have now been taken for ride height wheel track and engine clearance. These measurements have sent to Rodtech for a polished stainless steel IFS to be made before we graft into the chassis. Engineering is required on this custom build. Will keep everyone posted on the build of this project as we go.

19.01.2022 Nothing like squeezing in a quick little 10000 litre tank blast on a 40 degree day

19.01.2022 Finished a ground up restoration of a LX Torana done up as a SLR5000 tribute. I posted photos of this car earlier in its restoration several months ago. This car required new door skins and extensive rebuilding of the door frames. Completely new metal around rear window and lower area of front windscreen, new rear beaver, new sill panels, new lower radiator support panel and boot floor sections. We painted the red and black before clear coating and blocking to give a completely smooth transition between the red and black surfaces. Interior and underside was painted in 2 pack Raptor coat. The Torana was photographed ready for the owner to fit door internals etc therefore doors aren’t latched shut. The Torana looks great and the owner was happy with the results.

19.01.2022 Rotunda components

19.01.2022 Just because I haven’t added anymore restored cars photos to the page for awhile doesn’t mean we haven’t been doing anything, simply been too busy to load them. Here we have a 1966 valiant regal that we did a full restoration on. It came in with the running gear and seats already removed, we did the full tear down from there with every square inch back to bare metal. All the panels were gapped to achieve far better fit than factory, before the bodywork was prepared for a super straight paint finish. The dash was completely dismantled and restored along with all those regal spec stainless steel mouldings which were hammered, filed, sanded and then polished. This car turned out great with the customer over the moon with the result. It’s now having a 360 fitted and should be back in the streets shortly

19.01.2022 Some progress shots of the 37 Chev pickup project. Mocking up the Rodtech front end. Playing around with proportions and start working out rear track widths. New door skins have been formed and ready to fit up after the new bear claw latches have been fit to the door frames. Steering system then is the next stage.

18.01.2022 Boot floor replacement required on a 1958 Chevrolet. This car already had a custom made drop tank fitted but was ready to fall out due to poor mounting design and of course chronic rust issues. We cut out the remains of the floor and wheel wells, Sandblasted the surrounding areas, installed new fuel tank mounting members before fabricating a new floor out of 1.6 sheet. Once welded it was seam sealed primed and painted, another happy customer.

18.01.2022 A few more shots of the Diamond T showing various areas of rust that was cut out and new metal fabricated and welded in. There are no rust replacement panels available for a rare truck like these unlike some Fords and Chevs.

17.01.2022 100 years ago today 8th August 1918 this cannon was captured by the Australians in WW1 revenged Europe. It was quite a sobering day working on this relic wondering under what circumstances this cannon was over powered by the allies, and what was the fate of the German soldiers operating the cannon at the time. The restoration is coming together well with most of the new metal to replace all the rusted areas fabricated.

17.01.2022 The Challenger heading back to her happy owner

16.01.2022 Purchased this one owner 1985 Ford panel van a few months ago with the intention of giving it a cut and polish or maybe a quick rub back and doors closed paint job. For those of you that don’t know, my son Sheldon started his apprenticeship as a painter here at DJs Sandblasting and Restorations in June and I decided that it would be good to get him involved with a project that he could really cut his teeth on. The paint simply fell of after he applied the stripper, revealing... a really good body. A decision was made to do a ground up restoration. He removed the drivetrain, suspension, interior and wiring. Sheldon Sandblasted inside, outside and underneath the van. He also chose the colour. The ceterline wheels are off my Dodge Dart but look a treat on the van. The Detroit Steel wheels that I purchased for the van can be fitted later for that retro custom look It’s been great to see his enthusiasm while working on this project. We will post more photos as the project comes to completion. See more

16.01.2022 XP up on stands ready to start the big clean and detail for the Melbourne Motor Ex. For anyone interested and have access to channel 44, the XP is featured on My Garage Rules TV program at 12 noon today.

16.01.2022 Wishing all our customers and clients a merry Christmas and a happy and safe 2019. Thank you for your support over the last 12 months

16.01.2022 Sandblasting an incredibly rusted 45 foot flat deck trailer.

16.01.2022 Another happy customer picked up his fully restored LX Torana. This car was a good solid car but it had the usual rust in the lower doors, rear beaver, inside cowl plenum and rear shocker areas. All these areas were opened up, sandblasted, primed and all new metal fabricated and welded in. The customer chose GMH Barbados green which was sprayed out, blocked to 4000 grit and then polished. The satin black contrasts well against the green. The owner is now finishing off the car after we hung and gapped all the panels. Enjoy your ride Nathan

16.01.2022 We have just completed a paint job on a 1973 Dodge Challenger. This is a matching numbers car, and now that it’s had a nice new smooth paint job in its original colour, it’s looking pretty sweet for a 47 year old.

16.01.2022 Here are some progress photos of the Mack. New roof gutters have been hand crafted, along with new metal sectioned into the rusty roof. Now that the roof is unpicked, this gives us full access to metal finish the sectioned in areas. Work has now began replacing the rusty inners. Stay tuned

16.01.2022 The Burra Rotunda cast iron work has come up showing a lot more detail after all the many layers of paint has been blasted off. This includes revealing the foundry makers name in all the cast posts, J Robinson Gawler. All the porous casting needs to be epoxy filled to seal against future corrosion. It was nice to see that the plaque which was always thought to be cast iron is actually cast brass, made by A Dobbie and Son Adelaide, which is finely engraved in the bottom corner.

15.01.2022 Next full restoration in the workshop is a very original XW Falcon. This is undergoing our usual full tear down to bare metal with no stone left unturned. Plenty of dirt and old dry mud on this old girl. Arrived on Tuesday and now in the rotisserie by knock off Friday. I will try to keep weekly undated on this car. It’s going to turn out real nice.

15.01.2022 The nice Toranas keep rolling out of our workshop. This beautiful red one is number 5 with another one about to be finished in the new year. This car came into the workshop as a pretty honest original Plus 4. Quite a rare car in its own right. But in the end cubic inches won out, along with a heap more eye candy. After stripping the body down it revealed a fair bit of body filler was used in a previous life, along with rust in most of the usual Torana areas. After a couple ...visits to the sandblasting shed all the rust was taken back to clean metal before being completely sealed up in epoxy primer. New sill panels were made in house as the aftermarket sills don’t have the correct radius. The cowl panel was removed to replace new metal in the plenum. New metal was hand made to weld into the window openings. Bolt on panels were treated to the dipping process and were repaired primed and gapped out to achieve a better than original fitment. The body kit was then fitted up and gapped. The whole lot was then sprayed out in Mazda Soul Red. An amazing colour, but as each coat changes the colour and the effect it gives off, it was not the easiest colour choice. The bolt on panels were fit to the body and the whole car was sprayed out in one go. That way the colour was consistent. The engine bay and jambs were sprayed previous and then masked before the outside was painted. The blackouts that make these cars really pop was sealed up under the clear coat to give a smooth transition between the two colours. Finally the whole interior and underside was painted in Dominator texture coat for a great effect and durable finish. The results speaks for itself. The Torana looks stunning. The customer is very happy. Looking forward to seeing this car on the road shortly. With its 355 stroker and 6 speed gearbox it should perform as well as it looks. Thanks to my great team of blokes for your efforts in making this car the stand out that it is. See more

13.01.2022 We are too busy pumping the jobs through and therefore not keeping up with updating the FB page often enough. Came across the one owner WB Ute resto photos that had been forgotten to post. Will fully reassemble this vehicle when the motor is finished and returned to us, will post the finished results then.

13.01.2022 For those of you that follow my personal Facebook page you would know that I was happy and excited to have my xp featured in Street Machine magazine. Here are some shots taken by Troy Barker for the magazine, some were printed and some weren't used, either way Troy did a great job. Every area of the xp build was done in house with the exemption of the actual interior trimming and the wiring. All paint and panel, chassis work, exhaust/ headers, and metal work was completed by David at DJs Sandblasting and Restorations. We are happy to discuss any ideas and expectations that you may have regarding your project and offer assurance that every job we do is as important to us as it is for you, the customer.

12.01.2022 The latest restoration to come through our doors is this LX Torana. Here are a few photos of it’s original condition. Stay tuned for updates on repairs.

12.01.2022 Don't tell Natalie

11.01.2022 The 3rd Torana that we have done a ground up restoration on in the last 12 months is now back with its owner. Hopefully he will have it fully assembled and be enjoying the admiring looks this car will get when it hits the streets real soon.

11.01.2022 Full ground up restoration on a genuine 5litre VL Calais

10.01.2022 The restoration of the Diamond T truck body, the truck was used as a concrete truck in Brisbane early in its life before retiring to oil field exploration duties and then being abandoned in the Sandhills out from Birdsville for several decades. The new owner dismantled the cab and all the panels and gave them to DJ's Sandblasting and Restorations to fully restore back to better than new. The cab had extensive rust throughout with new door skins, floor panels, cowl wings, and ...front window surrounds needing full replacement metal fabricated and welded in. Both front guards were fabricated from new steel with only the wheel arch sections remaining original metal. Both bonnet side curtains were replaced with new metal. Rich Blue 2 PAC paint with an off white stripe was applied. The owner was very happy with the results again as we have already restored another truck for him a couple of years ago. He is now putting it back together on top of the rolling chassis that he handled himself while we've been restoring the bodywork. I will get a photo of the completed truck soon. See more

10.01.2022 The Extreme Auto Expo is finished for 2017. I was stunned to take out Elite runner up best display & impact award, Elite top 5 award, and the Meguiars superstars award which is an invitation to attend the Motor Ex show in Melbourne in 2018. Between these awards it amounted to $1500. Obviously I'm very happy with the way the car rated considering I built to what I thought would be a street elite standard not an elite level.

09.01.2022 We started on the dismantling and then the restoration of the 117 year old, heritage listed rotunda, at Burra.

09.01.2022 About to start day two of sandblasting the Arkaroola Village swimming pool. This job takes the prize for the longest distance traveled award. Could think of worst places to be working from though.

09.01.2022 The XW restoration has progressed well over the last week. Probably the most dramatic transformation is when a car goes from a rusty cruddy body to a fully blasted and primed body ready for the rebuilding process to begin. Sandblasting has revealed what is a pretty solid body but it has its rust issues that will all be attended to beginning next week. There is no other way of fully restoring an old car body than to sandblast first. The process hides nothing, good or bad. You know what you have got, and you can start the restoration with confidence that you have a solid foundation for a long lasting and high quality finish product.

08.01.2022 A walk around Steve’s Torana

08.01.2022 Here are some photos of an AP5 Valiant we have recently carried out a full restoration on. As these photos show, you never really know what’s under a simple pin hole of rust until you carry out a thorough repair. Here at DJs Sandblasting and Restoration you can be assured that this is the standard we will always uphold. ... Stay tuned to see this old girl in colour

08.01.2022 Getting the old 250 cross flow back together. Still the numbers matching motor from the van but should have a little more poke than the way it left the factory with 35 years ago. Now it’s been rebuilt with a decent cam, flat top pistons running at 11.1 compression, extensive head modifications and of course those triple Weber carbs on a Redline manifold. Pacemaker extractors and a proper twin exhaust system. Yes it would’ve been cheaper to slip in a Barra engine, but working on this old school cool hot crossy takes me back to my teenage years when I was drag racing my XD around the place. Can’t put a price on nostalgia.

07.01.2022 We have had the honour of giving these two WW1 German Mortar cannons a cosmetic restoration. After continue exposure to the elements for nearly 100 years, they both had suffered badly from rust and corrosion. After Sheldon gave them both a thorough sandblast it revealed all the finely stamped serial and part numbers stamped into every component. The large mortar was made in 1917 roughly half way through the Great War. These items were collected as souvenirs by the allies afte...r battles and were eventually sent back to places like Australia before being donated to various townships who had seen a number of the local men enroll for the War effort. These two mortars have been displayed at Kapunda since the early 1920s. Now that they have been treated to our restoration work, they will continue to look good and be a reminder to the sacrifices that our local people made over 100 years ago. See more

06.01.2022 Here at DJs Sandblasting and Restorations we have a 1946 Chevy Ute in for a off the chassis ground up restoration. A quick few photos from the start, now ready for wet rubbing and paint. Photos from this build coming soon.

06.01.2022 Last job out for 2017. Complementing the old ford gear on the back wall.

06.01.2022 The poor old effy has been a faithful work horse for the last 16 years. Lugging all the blasting gear and 3 ton air compressor around to various places. Taken the family to some amazing places four wheel driving around the country. Beginning of December I decided to give her a Christmas present in the form of a full repaint. The three of us threw 150 hours in over the first week and it was all painted. The next week was spent on detailing and refitting her back together. New... grill, lights, side steps, badging, carpets, all the original glass was etched from all the years of sandblasting so they were replaced with new tinted glass, and finally a 4 inch suspension replacement. Finally got the new logo on the tailgate. Job completed in 2 weeks. Thanks Wade and Sheldon for getting on board and helping to getting it smashed out. Should be good for another 16 years. Haha, by then it will be classed as an historic vehicle. See more

06.01.2022 Had a mate drop off his old pedal car for restoration. After checking out the damage from a tractor reversing over it years earlier and extensive rust resulting in a virtual lacework of holes throughout the bodywork, it was decided to fabricate a new body shell and only reuse the original chassis and wheels. The new body came up great after being treated with the same attention to detail as we do to all our Restorations. Owner was rapt with the results and was looking forward to bolting the chassis and wheels back under it before giving it to his young son to use and enjoy. The old body will be hung up in the shed as a conversation piece.

05.01.2022 Don't know what caused this kind of corrosion but it took substantially longer to blast this trailer than they normally do. But by the end of the day this customer has a clean and rust free 45 foot trailer ready for a good quality paint job and be put back on the road for many more years of work.

05.01.2022 Walk around video of the Regal, not Hollywood quality filming but it does give a good overview of what it turned out like.

05.01.2022 Here are a few photos of the 46 Chevy ute panels showing the condition and repairs carried out. A new tail gate skin was made from scratch to replace the rusty and damaged original, that then gave us full access to sandblast the inside of the tail gate. We could then straighten out the dents from the backside and fully prime inside and out making for a thorough repair. Both guards also needed extensive rust repairs which included replacing most of the edging adjacent to the... door. This Chevy Ute has been thoroughly restored leaving no pages unturned which is what we pride ourselves on here at DJs Sandblasting and Restoration.

05.01.2022 XT Fairmont in for the start of a full body restoration. Sill panels and rear quarters had already been done before by someone else. First up was to give it a good inspection which revealed some substandard quality work done to the inner sill panels. Plenty of bog found in the new sills and quarter panels. No surprises really. In the end new inner and outer sill panels, both torque boxes, both lower A pillars and all four front underside seat mounts. New dog leg sections ...and new lower rear quarter was also welded in. Everything was sandblasted and primed to seal the job up in waiting for round 2 when the customer is ready. All the bolt on panels were done by DJs sandblasting and Restorations several years ago and kept in dry storage until the body shell part of this restoration was in the system. Sometimes it’s good to have these bigger projects get done in stints over a long period of time and as money becomes available for the customer. Too many people want it done in one hit and then completely run out of funds and then sell the car off as a unfinished project. You’ll get it on the road one day mate See more

04.01.2022 HG premier restoration finished.

04.01.2022 If you missed out on the last issue of Street Machine, here is the full article on the XP.

03.01.2022 Moonta show and shine. Great cars, great weather, great company. Good to catch up with a few Eudunda locals over there. The XP came home with the runner up best Ford and the best V8 car of the show. Very happy with the results, only downside of the weekend was to witness on the way home just out of Moonta, an accident involving the beautiful Red HQ coupe in the photos. The car is now a right off. Luckily the three occupants weren't seriously hurt, but really feel for the owner as it was a really nice car

03.01.2022 1955 Ford Thunderbird in for some metal surgery. Some other tradesmen had tried to do some repairs to the body but was very substandard. We often are called in to fix other people’s attempts at panel work and rust repairs. This can be frustrating because not only does it need redoing, it often takes longer than it would’ve because things are distorted or ground away to nothing. New rear wheel arch sections, sill panels, front guard lowers and footwell. Other miscellaneous sections were replaced along the way. Now back to the owner for him to finish off.

03.01.2022 Well the 2018 Melbourne Motor Ex is finished. The XP looked good and mixed in well with the other 24 best of the best hand picked cars from around Australia. The judges then picked the best 6 from those 24 cars, of which the XP wasn't one of them. Most of the other various awards were distributed out between those top 6 cars. Back in November at the Adelaide show when the XP was awarded as a Superstars entrant, I didn't realise the significance of this award as I hadn't ente...red a car in any car show for over two decades, and therefore was oblivious to how far the real "show car" scene had come. To come down to Melbourne then and mix it with the best cars in the country has been a huge eye opener, the standard of some of these cars are world class. So to be included into this "class of 2018" has been an experience I will never forget. I am coming home with no intentions of changing anything on the car to make it better or more competitive, l am coming home looking forward to driving it more and continuing to enjoy it, after all that was the reason for building it. Thanks to Natalie, Sheldon and Nick for coming down and helping with everything, and Mike and Lester for coming down as support team. See more

02.01.2022 Restoration work completed on the Burra Town clock and cast iron pole. The clock and pole was donated and installed back in 1974. Many coats of paint covered 45 years of rust and corrosion. Every square inch was sandblasted back to clean metal before repairing and painting in 2 pack for a long lasting and durable finish.

01.01.2022 A selection of some other random jobs that have been completed in recent times.

01.01.2022 Just completed a restoration on this S series. After a full sandblast it revealed rust and previous dodgy repairs. Lower rear quarters and floor pans were rolled up and fitted along with many other numerous sections which needed new metal to be made up. As there is very little if anything available in the way of repair sections for these cars, everything was hand made and formed. The car was finished off in period correct Alabaster cream. It now is off to the next stage of reassembling. Although this model doesn’t have a real strong following it will be great to see another well restored example on the road again soon.

01.01.2022 Rotunda structure going back up at Burra. One big meccano set to put together. All parts were numbered and documented so they all go back as they were, but still a little nerve racking making sure all the measurements are correct and castings and paint isn't damaged. Thanks to Wade Whitehead, right hand man at DJs Sandblasting and Restorations, and for today, Sheldon for assistance in the restoration and erection of this historic building. Not much longer to go.

01.01.2022 Got back into some old petrol bowser restorations lately. 3 double and 1 single (not pictured) Dominion skins and gallon indicator faces fabricated for local and interstate customers.
