23.01.2022 D I V E R S I T Y Did you know that gender diversity is more common among Autistic people than the neurotypical population? A recent study suggests that, by the time they reach adulthood, up to 15% of autistic and neurodiverse young people will identify with a different gender than what they were assigned at birth. Yesterday, we attended a professional development session presented by Damien Riggs as part of Monash University’s #diversityandinclusionweek program. ... It was a great opportunity to learn more about how, as psychologists, we can support young people who are transgender or non-binary and neurodiverse. For more information about gender diversity, see The Rainbow Owl! www.the-rainbow-owl.com/ Photo credit: Instagram @rainbowyouth

In this article by the ABC, Hannah stated, "Since diagnosis, it means I hide it less and I can laugh at myself more because I can understand it." https://www.abc.net.au//hannah-gadsby-new-show-do/12282772

19.01.2022 Have you ever tried to sit on a ball in the swimming pool, or the ocean? You know what happens - eventually, it’s going to pop up! If we try to push down our stress, frustration, or grief in order to support a young person we love, just like that ball, it will inevitably pop up. We can’t help our kids to manage their big emotions without first acknowledging our own.

19.01.2022 This week's #FridayFunny (If you’re wondering what hippos have to do with psychology your hippocampus is a part of your brain which is really very important when storing memories, using your imagination and spatial navigation)

19.01.2022 More than 200,000 Aussies are on the autism spectrum, and while most cases are picked up in childhood, a growing number of adults are being diagnosed later in l...ife. Many have spent years searching for answers, but even with a diagnosis, they’re struggling to access the support they need. #TheProjectTV FOR more information on Kay’s writing and Jessie’s support network head to: https://www.thelostgirl.com.au https://www.kaykerr.com/

14.01.2022 Meet Jordi, the newest member of our Client Care Team!

12.01.2022 'Comparison is the thief of joy' is a quote that I try to hold in mind, especially when having children who might not follow the same developmental pathway as their same-aged peers. It can be helpful to focus on progress (little steps), running your own race, being better than yesterday. But what happens when today doesn’t look better than yesterday? When you find a strategy that works, or when your child seems to ‘get it’, only to have things fall apart again later? This is ...where the better than yesterday rhetoric can be more harmful than helpful, creating feelings of disappointment, frustration or despair. Our young people are complex. We are complex. Our teens well, you get the idea. Progress will look and feel different for every person and every family, and sometimes we won’t be able to see today’s progress tomorrow. So if your path of progress looks more like a squiggle than a straight line, remember this: you are a human being and this is your unique journey.

11.01.2022 Understanding what is going on for our young person can be challenging, especially when they have difficulties in understanding and expressing their emotions. It can be helpful to look beyond what we see (behaviour) and simply provide support.

11.01.2022 Over the next few weeks we'll be introducing our Kidd Clinic team to you Introducing Alise Bender, another of our Provisional Psychologists.

09.01.2022 What is WIPD? IT ALL STARTED WHEN We were founded in 2010 in response to global stories of real teenagers, real heartache and their very real responses. In 2010, several rainbow young people took their own lives following bullying and harassment resulting from the lack of acceptance of their sexuality or gender identity. https://www.wearitpurple.org/ Our rainbow young people have EVERY right to feel safe and accepted

09.01.2022 As parents, we often put our own needs last But if we don’t care for ourselves, not only do we run the risk of parenting less effectively and compassionately, we are not modelling self-care to our children. - Maggie Dent Looking out for one another and taking the time to check in on our friends and family is really important. 08.01.2022 We love a good brain pun! #FridayFunny

07.01.2022 I first became aware of declarative language about 15 years ago when we decided to engage a therapist trained in Relationship Development Intervention (RDI). Questions that require a specific right/wrong answer or demands that expect a certain response often lead to shutdown/withdrawal with many of our young people. Let's face it, most of us don't respond well to being told what to do! Changing language can be so helpful in eliciting different responses from others. When we ...make declarative statements to others, we are inviting rather than demanding and therefore the other person's fight or flight responses are immediately reduced. We are 'thinking out loud' (noticing, wondering..) and the other person can choose if or how they would like to respond. The pressure is off and communication, independent problem-solving skills, spontaneity, and being able to sit more comfortably with uncertainty is likely to increase. It can be difficult at first to shift language styles and it takes some conscious effort (I still slip back into instrumental language - questions, demands!) but I encourage you to begin trying it with others in your life (partner, children) and notice any changes in their responses. The PDA society have released this graphic which provides some examples of declarative language.

05.01.2022 A short film made by and with nonspeaking autistic people. On December 24, 2020, the musician Sia publicly offered to fund CommunicationFIRST to make an introductory short to her new movie MUSIC. The short was intended to help humanise and spread awareness about real nonspeaking autistic people, who were left out of MUSIC, despite being the subject of the movie. After a team of nonspeaking and autistic people brought together by CommunicationFIRST in January 2021 previewed MU...SIC and provided feedback and recommendations to Sia on how to improve it, they received no response from her team. In early February 2021, CommunicationFIRST decided to move forward to produce a self-funded short by and with real nonspeaking autistic people, and to launch it on February 12, 2021, the MUSIC US release date. The film LISTEN is the result. https://communicationfirst.org/LISTEN/

03.01.2022 In the past few years I have observed a dramatic increase in the number of women self-identifying or being diagnosed as autistic. The author of this article questions why she had to wait so many years to discover this about herself. "Why did it take almost 30 years for this information to be presented to me? Why was I constantly overlooked by psychologists growing up, and how come Autism had never even come into my own radar once? The answer is simple. Unawareness. Unawareness in the way Autism presents itself differently in every Autistic person, and especially misinformation and unawareness about the differences between Autism in boys/men and girls/women."

03.01.2022 A #mindfulmoment for your Monday For some of us, practising mindfulness can seem a little bit boring, but one of the neat things about the 5-4-3-2-1 exercise is that it can be different every time you do it! For example, you could taste saltiness when you are by the ocean, or the aftertaste of your morning coffee as you sit at your desk. In your bed, you may feel the warmth of your body and the heaviness of your head on your pillow, and at the park, the squishiness of the ...grass and the breeze on your arms. You will hear different sounds at a cafe than in your car. A common misconception about mindfulness is that you have to sit still in order for it to ‘work’. If stimming assists you to feel calmer, you may notice the sensations of your body moving, the pattern of sound you create, or the shapes you are making. Before you start, remember to take a few deep breaths. Try it out this week! Let us know what you noticed in your body and in the world around you.

03.01.2022 Calling upcoming graduates! If you’re finishing your masters in Clinical Psychology, we want to hear from you. 02.01.2022 What can help someone with a PDA brain, in the words of PDA-er and blogger, Sally Cat: Having enough quiet time. PDA brains overload easily (this might be because it is very tiring having to fight demand avoidance all the time). We are better able to fight demand avoidance if we have had enough rest. Feeling we have a choice can switch off our demand avoidance don’t do it! feeling, so it is much easier for us to do things if people give us a choice, instead of telling us w...e have to. We can even tell ourselves we have a choice (for example, I don’t have to do that), we may find our demand avoidance against it goes away. Understanding how our PDA works helps us to feel OK about ourselves too. If there is a young person in your life with PDA, and you would like to know more, you can find our Supporting Young People With PDA webinar here: vimeo.com/ondemand/supportingpda

02.01.2022 This Carer’s Week, we want to join Carers WA in recognising the important role of carers, and raising awareness of the support that is available for those who care. A carer is someone who provides unpaid support to a family member or friend who is living with a chronic illness, disability, mental health challenge or other medical or psychosocial difficulty. Carers - we want you to know that we see you. We hear you. We want to take this opportunity to remind you how impor...tant it is to take care of yourself, although we know that it is easier said than done. Visit Carer Gateway for more information about the support and resources that are available for carers. Theresa and The Kidd Clinic team.

02.01.2022 The PDA Society has just released a new introductory guide to PDA!
