06.01.2022 Have you ever had a Joint replacement or have one scheduled? There are a few variations of joint replacements...one being: Uncemented Joint Replacements... (Hip implants pictured below) Initial fixation is via 'press fit' technique. This involves preparing a space in the bone that is slightly smaller (usually by 1mm) than the size of the implant. The implant is then hammered (carefully!) into this space. This creates a snug fit. Risk of fracture is low as bone has a degree of elasticity, plus the difference (1mm) is so small. Biological fixation occurs over the first 1-3 months after surgery. The implant surface is roughened and porous (like a sponge). This allows the bone to grow on to it and into it. The surface of the implant is often sprayed with hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyapatite is one of the key mineral components of normal bone. This encourages the bone to grow on to the implant and promotes fixation. LMcG Orthopaedics Team
