25.01.2022 Dental health week is here! Ill be sharing one dental fact with a paediatric focus each day. Please share with fam and friends. Dr sandra

24.01.2022 Brushing determined little peoples teeth can be challenging! I hear parents exclaim that this job is difficult which can lead to skipping brushing at night time all together! I recommend brushing teeth in bed whilst tucked in and the air is calmer This provides better visibility for parents Better head stability ( like in the dental chair) And in children 4 and under where spitting out is difficult - no rinsing is required! ( tiny amount of toothpaste to swallow is OK)... Dont forget to brush for two minutes to keep decay at bay Dr Sandra See more

21.01.2022 The AAPD (Australasian Academy of Paediatric Dentistry) recommends that children should have their first dental visit by their first birthday! A child should visit within 6 months of the eruption of the first tooth or by the age of 1. The idea is that early examination and preventative care will protect your childs smile into the future- the earlier the better! This will ensure the best chance for preventing dental problems. Creating a dental home is such a pleasure for ...us paediatric dentists as your childs oral health is managed in a comprehensive, accessible , coordinated and family centred way. This reflects BEST practice for the optimal delivery of oral health care for busy families and children. See more

14.01.2022 Quick visual reminder for parents of children 6 and under. Parents should dispense the appropriate amount of toothpaste for their children and assist in tooth brushing x 2 times a day! Sometimes we suggest to change the concentration of toothpaste your child should use. Thats a tailored approach based on a number of factors. Any questions? Always ask your health professional. Remember - Only brush the ones you want to keep!

14.01.2022 The dental home concept: IDEA: Take your child to the dentist after 6 months of age but no later than age 1. This concept reflects best practice for the optimal delivery of oral health care to all. Tooth decay can have serious implications for a child’s long term health and well being.Did you know that tooth decay is a CHRONIC but PREVENTABLE DISEASE? ... We now see: Dental decay prevalent in 2 year olds An increase in dental decay in children 2-5 years of age, for the first time in history! 90% of parents feel dental care is really important for their kids, yet 75% of parents don't bring their kids in before 1. And YES we expect some tears but don't worry we can handle it! If your dentist does not see babies from birth- find a professional who can. We talk about a number of topics including: Mum’s oral health Oral hygiene Feeding habits Dietary advice Fluoride exposure How to take care of your child’s oral health Growth and dental development Dental trauma what to expect and what to do! 14.01.2022 Dental trauma cases often requires treatment that involves both general dentists and many specialists. Optimal treatment relies upon the expertise of a broad spectrum of dental specialists such as oral and maxillofacial surgeons, Paediatric dentists, endodontists, orthodontists, prosthodontists and periodontists. The primary urgent care is frequently provided by paediatric dentists or oral maxillofacial surgeons in a hospital setting. If your child has a trauma- contact your dental team urgently.

13.01.2022 Anxiety, treatment burden, complications surrounding treatment, dental infections/facial swellings or special needs are some of the reasons I treat children under a general anaesthetic. Not all children require this treatment , however as a specialist, the operating theatre is where I have spent many years training to deliver high quality treatment. The operating theatre is often a new experience for parents and many can find the idea a little daunting. However rest assured..., the upmost care is taken to ensure the best quality of work for your child is achievable. Starting with IDEAL isolation using a rubber dam, where the focus is solely on the tooth in question. It’s easy to see just how particular we are - it is truely beautiful to work in such ideal conditions! If you have any questions please comment or send me a message. Dr Sandra

07.01.2022 Paediatric dentists are specialists who have completed a further 3 years of training after obtaining their dental degree. Our masters training includes working across tertiary hospitals, dental clinics, university clinics and rural clinics. Through our training we have been equipped to treat each child as an individual to achieve the optimum oral health using evidence based dentistry and the latest research available. Often we treat children in the dental chair with various t...echniques including happy gas (inhalation sedation) and can also complete treatment under General Anaesthesia (GA) in a hospital setting, where appropriate. Most often, general dentists and GPs refer patients to paediatric dentists however a referral to visit us is not necessary. So how to know if your child needs specialists care? Children we have visit us include those with: dental decay special needs/ additional needs complex dental treatment needs behaviour management challenges including anxiety, phobias missing teeth or congenital issues complex medical conditions a history of dental trauma newborns, babies and toddlers If you feel your child could benefit from specialist care - give our friendly staff a call to discuss further. 05.01.2022 Soaking in the DELICIOUS newborn phase! Congratulations on becoming a mama Information overload is common at your place now right?! Here are 5 ORAL HEALTH tips you NEED to know and SHARE! 1: Dont neglect yourself . Many women do not seek dental care during their pregnancy (1). Please ensure you attend to anything in your OWN mouth that needs attention. Your health is very important... 2: Establish a dental home for your baby by 12 months of age. This is SUPER important. Things we would discuss includes: Caries risk Caries prevention Normal and abnormal oral development Detection of any abnormalities Diet and feeding habits Counselling regarding teething Non nutritive habits like dummy use, thumb sucking and grinding. Trauma prevention tips 3: Visit someone who is comfortable in assessing newborn babies and infants. Find your local oral health clinician who can assess very young children and dont be afraid to ask before your visit! 4: Start cleaning your babys teeth as soon as they appear in the mouth. Cleaning teeth and using age appropriate Fluoride products are important habits to start early. 5: Dental ACCIDENTS! They happen- so know what to do! When your child starts walking 12-30 months of age- the risk of dental trauma increases (actually twice as high as the incidence for all children) (2). So call your dentist/ paediatric dentist and have your child assessed. Lastly- if you are worried or have doubts about your child- listen to your gut instinct and talk to someone about it. Feel free to message me I am ALWAYS happy to help! I hope you have found this useful. Please tag all your Mummy friends and share my page more tips to follow! Dr Sandra References: 1. 02.01.2022 Dental health week- fact #2 Did you know?

02.01.2022 In honour of International Happiness Day- a little reminder for you folks to share your smile with the world! Flash back : Cambodia 2005 Phnom Pehn, Cambodia (World family Orphanage). Your ability to smile confidently is OUR TOP PRIORITY. Your oral health plays a critical role in your general health and it is an important aspect of health for everyone - especially for the little people in your lives. Australian oral health research facts regarding children: ... Approximately 40% of primary school children in NSW have experienced tooth decay in baby teeth by 5 years of age, increasing to around 50% of children by age 9 years 46% of children in NSW had not visited a dentist before the age of five Early childhood tooth decay is a predictor of future tooth decay in adolescence and adulthood The period between 18 and 40 months of age may be a significant period for the development of tooth decay, with rapid development of new tooth decay. This is also a critical time for preventive intervention, to stop or reverse early disease before fillings/treatments are required. On a more serious note: These facts concern me greatly. These facts mean that some children are not accessing oral health care and possibly enduring poor oral health which includes pain, infection and systemic effects. The current global health situation we are entering highlights that there are threats to our health that are somewhat out of our control. This exemplifies the importance of prioritising our health so that during such times, we can focus on staying well. Again, the aforementioned facts concern me greatly. Preventable diseases such as tooth decay (caries), are diseases we should not have to worry about during times when accessing health care/ hospitals/ medical clinics and dental clinics MAY become restricted. Just a reminder for our community to refocus on the health of our families and moving forward; to persist with the prevention of diseases that can be largely be avoided. After all, arent we lucky to live in Australia where the quality of health care is up there with the best of them? Dr Sandra

02.01.2022 We always look forward to meeting the new kids to the practice! Dr Sandra #barbiecareerdolls
