24.01.2022 Four out of the six in this line up can cause gas and bloating. Any idea which 4 are the culprits? Green peppers - did you know that they are unripened red peppers? As they are yet to reach their peak ripeness, they contain certain chemical compounds that can cause gut problems for some. Artichokes - are high in fructans, a fibre that’s difficult to digest. This leads to fermentation which creates excessive gas & bloating. ... Leeks - also high in fructans Pears - contain fructose (a fruit sugar that many find hard to digest) & sorbitol, which can cause significant bloating in some people. 16.01.2022 Melbourne is synonymous with coffee, and today was a great day for a cup - as it’s International Coffee Day There are some benefits of drinking coffee for your gut health - it can improve bowel movement ... there’s increasing evidence that suggests it may improve the diversity of the gut microbiome However, if you already have gut issues, coffee may not be your friend. People with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis or irritable bowel disease often find that coffee aggravates their symptoms. The acid found in coffee can affect the lining of the stomach and caffeine can be a trigger for heartburn. An irritated stomach after coffee could be due to the caffeine, but it can also often be due to the milk or sweetness added. If you experience symptoms after a coffee, you could always reduce the amount, try decaf or try a soothing cup of tea instead #coffee #melbourne #guthealth #healthygut

11.01.2022 The answer is that most don’t know, as fatty liver disease is not often associated with symptoms. People generally only find out following a routine blood test or ultrasound. Non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects approx. 1 in 3 Australians and is becoming more common due to our diet of too much added fats and sugars. NAFLD more commonly occurs in people with -... obesity high blood pressure high cholesterol type 2 diabetes polycystic ovarian syndrome Other rarer causes include an under-active thyroid, rapid weight loss & certain medications (e.g amiodarone, steroids, tamoxifen) The majority of NAFLD does not lead to liver damage, and is called simple fatty liver. A small proportion (~5%) will progress to Non Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) which is inflammation and scarring of the liver which could eventually lead to cirrhosis. The treatment of fatty liver includes maintaining a healthy lifestyle, limiting alcohol intake, diabetes management and monitoring and treating other conditions such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol. If you have received an abnormal liver function test, it is important to see a specialist to determine the best course of action. This will include how to minimise complications. #fattyliver #fattyliverdisease #nafld #healthygut #healthyliver #liverfunction #gastroenterology #gastronorth

11.01.2022 What sleeping position is best for digestion? Many of us probably have a tendency to sleep on our left side after a big meal as it’s more comfortable. There’s a good reason why. Due to the shape of our stomach and its position in the body, lying on your left side allows gravity to help move waste to your large intestine, therefore aiding digestion. ... It is also theorized that lying on this side can help reduce reflux, due to the stomach (and its acid) sitting lower than the oesophagus. #sleep #sleepingtips #reflux #atetoomuch #digestivehealth #digestion #guthealth #healthygut #gastronorth

10.01.2022 Why do we have acid in our stomachs? Gastric acid is made by the parietal cells of the glands in the stomach. The secretion of this acid increases even before food reaches the stomach - just the thought, sight or smell is enough of a trigger. We need gastric acid to -... break down food, especially proteins, which aids digestion help absorb vitamin B12 & other nutrients kill bacteria and other pathogens in the stomach to prevent infection If we were to put stomach acid on our skin, it would burn it. Why doesn’t it burn holes in our stomach? Because our stomach has a mucous membrane that protects it from the acid. This wall of cells is constantly replaced. As one layer burns through, another replaces it. Very clever! #acidreflux #gastricacid #gutfacts #gastroenterology #guthealth #digestion #healthygut

04.01.2022 The calprotectin test is a biomarker that assesses inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. This test helps to discriminate between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). 01.01.2022 The main symptoms of acid reflux are heartburn (a rising burning sensation behind your breastbone) and regurgitation of food or liquid with a sour taste, caused by your stomach acid. It can be extremely uncomfortable and is often worse after a big meal or when lying down or bending over. Pictured below are some common trigger foods for reflux. Omitting some from your diet can help reduce your symptoms. ... Losing excess weight can also improve reflux symptoms. Being overweight leads to an increase in abdominal pressure which can then lead to acid back flow. Dietary changes that help you maintain a healthy weight can therefore improve reflux symptoms. #reflux #refluxsymptoms #refluxtriggers #healthyweight #acidreflux #regurgitation #triggerfoods
