25.01.2022 A big thanks to all those who made it out to the Working Bee this last weekend. Because of COVID-19 it was only South Australian members that could go and we were a bit worried that numbers would be down, but typically there was a really good turn out and they got lots of niggling jobs out of the road. All ready now for 8th to 12 March 2021

25.01.2022 This is why we request entrants to do shakedown runs, why we mandate that vehicles return to the pit after each run to be checked for loose or missing parts, why we encourage entrants to report any problems straight away, why we will stop the event until we find those missing parts and why we will check the track before and after each session.

24.01.2022 Absolutely cracking day at Peter Page Holden. A lot of interest in the car and Land Speed Racing, it’s a real buzz to show people a different kind of Motorsport.

21.01.2022 Back into it . It has been a busy week working on what feels like a giant fibreglass jigsaw puzzle . I recently watched a video of a streamliner body being bu...ilt in only 23 days using CAD and a massive 3D robotic thing to machine a complete mould for the fibreglass .... I estimate I have spent 50 days and I am probably only a quarter of the way through the body work . See more

16.01.2022 A good read, thanks Jon for sharing.

16.01.2022 Well, heres the official 2020 Speedweek report: We got to the salt on thursday and cleared tech on friday. We were the third or fourth car off the line on sat...urday with nothing but high expectations and clean dry flat salt in front. But in all the excitement, the driver pushed the steering wheel too far onto the shaft which allowed the cool new paddle shifter to hit the digital gauge display. So, every turn of the wheel caused the transmission to upshift. So, that wasnt good. Bogged the motor and struggled up to 255 mph. On Sunday, we lined up for another early run. It was a great start with the car pulling hard through first and second gears. The motor started cutting out in third but eventually got up to the 7000 rpm and the 4th gear shift. The motor started cutting out more and sputtered through the final timing lights at around 355 mph. On the return road we found the remnants of an electrical fire that took out the entire wiring harnes and engine management computer. So that was bad. Lines were really short and there was basically no waiting for most of the afternoon. Only 363 days until next year!!

09.01.2022 As I write this we are just over 2 months out from Speed Week 2021. Up until the end of 2020 things were starting to look pretty good, and then we got the outbreaks in NSW and VIC. We have been getting calls asking if Speed Week will still go ahead. And the standard answer is we are still planning to run an event until someone tells us we can't. It remains a day to day proposition and is totally out of our hands. With that in mind, here's a review of where we are today. I'm u...sing the figures from the 2020 entry list as so far many entrants are sitting on their hands rolling over and confirming their entry for 2021. For 2020 we had 237 entries, 14 of those were from overseas, so unfortunately we won't see them again this year, except for Eva who already has her streamliner back in Australia. South Australia has blocked NSW from entering, so that is 56 entrants who at the present time cannot come. However there is still time for the block to be removed should numbers improve in NSW. Queensland is still open to South Australia, however for them to travel the normal route through NSW under the current restrictions means they cannot stop in NSW, which is virtually impossible.* There are two alternative routes one of which takes them on the Birdsville Track and adds an additional 1000 km to an already long 2000 km journey. Or to head even further north, which adds an additional 3000 km. This is something that I don't think many of the 38 Queensland entrants would contemplate. Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia are all currently open to South Australia, so we potentially have 129 entrants who can come to Speed Week. To make Speed Week financially viable, we would need all of those entrants to compete. And we need these entrants to confirm their entries as soon as they can. If you are delaying sending in your entry because of the new medical examination requirement please consider just submitting your entry now, you can lodge your medical at a later date, so long as we have it before Speed Week starts. The other complexity in all of this is the enforcement of quarantine on returning residents. This is an issue not only for entrants, but officials as well and will have a direct and dire consequence on Speed Week if re-introduced in any of the States. We can't even begin to predict where the situation will be in a month's time or two months' time, all we can do is keep working with what we have now. Looking forward, we realise that things may change and certainly may get worse before they get better, so we will delay any decision for as long as we can if it means ensuring that the event goes ahead. Thank you for your time, support and consideration. Be safe and healthy. * update from when I wrote this, Victorians can be permitted to travel through NSW to get home with a minimum of stops and contact.

05.01.2022 Speed Week 2021 and COVID-19 Please read this and feel free to pass it on to others. Our strategy is to run Speed Week with as many COVID-19 safe guards in place as practicable using the regulations as prescribed now, because if we did get some one infected at Speed Week we would have to be able to respond in a responsible manner. As part of our COVID-19 Management Plan we will be required to provide contract tracing information for all Speed Week participants.... This information will be captured via the entry forms, online payments, the volunteer register and manually at lake entry. You may end up getting asked to provide your details more than once, please bear with us, better to get it twice than not at all. We ask for your patience when queuing at lake entry, especially in the first few days as the collection of contact tracing information will be a manual process as we have no access to mobile coverage or internet to run a QR type system. (The use of 2 lanes, one for entrants and officials and the other for spectators will be strictly enforced at Speed Week 2021) Here are a couple of ways you can help. 1. Book your tickets online - https://www.dlra.org.au/online-booking.htm 2. Use our online COVID-19 Contact Tracing Record - https://www.dlra.org.au/covid19-contact-tracing.htm 3. Download a contact tracing form, fill it out and bring it with you to Lake Entry - https://www.dlra.org.au/docs/contact-tracing-record-form.pdf At this time in South Australia it is not mandatory for face masks in the general community, but it is recommended to wear a mask when out in public if you are unable to physically distance. So bring some masks and any other personal protective equipment you wish. We will be providing hand wash and sanitiser in high traffic areas, but please bring your own as well. Children under 12 years of age do not need to wear a mask. Masks or face coverings should NOT be worn by children under the age of 2 or anyone who has trouble breathing. Please be respectful to others as reasons for not wearing a mask are not always obvious. The best ways to protect yourself and others against COVID-19 continue to be: * Getting tested if you have any symptoms, no matter how mild. * Practising physical distancing (keep 1.5 metres between yourself and others wherever and whenever possible). * Washing (or sanitising) your hands regularly. * Wiping down frequently touched surfaces. * Covering coughs and sneezes in a tissue or elbow. * Staying home and avoiding others when sick.

01.01.2022 Impound Insights for El Mirage October 2020 While still a bit hungover from World Finals, a trip to the El Mirage lakebed seemed like a great cure. It was. In t...heory anyway. As technical inspection got under way on Saturday everyone was asked to follow the guidelines that were drawn up by the SCTA to keep in compliance with the standards set by the State’s governing bodies to battle to pandemic that has the world in its grips. As far as I could tell everyone kept it between the lines and were grateful that the SCTA had put together a plan that was sound enough to race by. A big thank you goes out to out to the members of the elected board and all the others who put the plan together. The weather on Saturday was epic but by the time we got to racing on Sunday it turned, and the meet was blown out by the high winds. There was a total of 60 entries but there were only 45 starts that were made and the first round wasn’t completed. This means that amongst other things, there were no points awarded for this meet. That leaves us one race to determine the champions for the 2020 season. Hopefully November treats us better. Let’s talk about some speed’s, shall we? The top speed of the meet went to Rick Yacoucci in the Costella Yacoucci streamliner with a wicked 268.484 mph pass. While this speed qualified for a record, Rick declined to keep it and give it another shot in November. Why would he do that you ask? It’s a points thing. There are 6 records officially in the books. Here they are. The first car into Impound was driven by Derek McLeish. He was behind the wheel of the Team McLeish Datsun entry and he opened it up with a 141.936 mph blast in the H/GCC class. Surprised to see Derek keep that one. Why you ask? It’s a points thing. The Hondata CRX entry had Aaron Hale piloting the entry in F/BFALT to a stout 213.146 mph record. Aaron put over 25 mph on a record that had stood since 1988! The final car to make an appearance was the Eight in a Row Racing entry in XO/BSTR with Randall Foehner at the controls. The once open record now stands at 169.384 mph. And here’s some motorcycle action for you The Green Fiend entry had Mikey Hanrahan in saddle and he pushed the 100/A-G record to 107.112 mph with Kawasaki power. Another 100cc entry had Robbie Cadwallader aboard a Kawasaki KX100 for his namesake entry in the 100/MPS-F class. Robbie ran 95.704 mph on an open record with a 92.000 mph minimum. And to wrap it up we have Randy Speranza setting a record in the 2000/SC-PBG class for the Speranza Brant Robinson Racing entry. Randy put down a 181.835 mph run to bump the record set in 2018. The November meet is a scant three weeks away with technical inspections on Friday ( 11/13 ) and two days of racing the following Saturday and Sunday ( 11/14 & 11/15 ). We will have to go through the gyrations of social distancing and or wearing a face covering so be prepared. There are downloadable forms on the SCTA website that will be required. Your patience and understanding is appreciated. Also, the November meet can be a chilly one so come prepared with something or someone to keep you warm Or better yet, both! See you in November. Cheers! Mike Kaehny Record Certification Officer
