21.01.2022 Something I always get told by friends and now work colleagues as a dyslexic is that my emails and messages always come off harsh or abrupt. People always ask me if something is wrong when really I just find written communication really difficult to navigate! My messages on social media in particular are often short because I get so stressed about sending a reply those three dots turn into yet another written message I have to respond to! I honestly cant tell you how anxious this makes me. In todays post I sharing with you an email signature I have at the bottom of every email I send. Its just a nice disclaimer to make people a little more aware of my difficulties and to alleviate any misunderstandings. How do you navigate social media as a #dyslexic ?? Comment below!!

18.01.2022 Merry Christmas to our wonderful dyslexic community Thank you all so much for supporting us and our cause. Take care of yourselves this Christmas and New Year. If you are able to be with your families, take time to relax and reconnect after the tough year that was 2020. If you’re unable to be with loved ones this season, know that there are people out there who love and support you, even from afar. Treat yourself and others with kindness and compassion and try to look for s...ome small aspect of gratitude when reflecting on the year past. For me personally, I am so much more grateful for the ability to connect with my family- whether that be through technology or having the freedom to fly back to Melbourne if I needed. I am grateful to my team and their willingness to adapt to the ever changing situation and to our mentees who I have been able to learn so much more from this year as we expanded our mentoring program. Thank you 2020 for teaching me to appreciate the small things #christmas2020 #feelinggrateful #timetoreconnect See more

16.01.2022 How do you feel about the word disability? Although I think that the word disability comes with many negative connotations, in many ways it does reflect the struggles face daily. It also gives us the legal power we deserve when it comes to disability discrimination and other contexts. With that said, I feel that calling dyslexia a learning disability is a little inaccurate as it does not disable ALL forms of my learning- only those specific to reading and writing; hence... the more appreciated term specific learning disability (SLD). I know many people see dyslexia as an invisible disability yet I dont think this quite describes my experience either as personally, all you have to do is see a piece of my handwriting or hear me read aloud and all of a sudden my struggles become extremely visible. It simply depends on context. In summary, a very complex issue, however I personally identify with the word dyslexic and capitalise on the word disability when I need to. No matter what Im called, it does not define me #disability #dyslexia #disabilitydoesnotmeaninability See more

12.01.2022 When I was growing up my mum and teachers always tried to incorporate written based timetables which just didnt work for me. I lose things. I dont like to read things. Even if theyre pretty and colour coded. My brain is inconsistent and therefore I cannot rely on one diary or app/device. After years and years of trying different apps/diaries/calendars etc, this is the system I have come up with that best keeps me on track. Its simple, free, accessible across multiple devi...ces (in case I forget one) and cuts down the number of apps I have to use each day (as I already us one note for note taking and outlook for email). It builds in multiple reminders and categorisation systems so that I can easily track which tasks are urgent and if I do forget about something, Im always a few days ahead of schedule for those #dyslexicaccidents. It also allows me to use dictation/audio recordings so I can make sure Im accurately recording homework tasks. I hope it helps you or gives you some ideas about how you can organise your study #organisation #studygram #homework #deadlines See more

12.01.2022 Sometimes #dyslexia can feel incredibly isolating. Our eye reading friends don’t always understand the struggle as it’s not their lived experience. On the other hand, so many dyslexics are still trapped in the closet, meaning that you can go your whole life without having a conversation with another dyslexic about dyslexia. This connection is so important for maintaining self-esteem and being able to share the mental load. To all the dyslexic students out there, know that you’re not alone! There are so many of us out there who think just like you. If you’d like to meet another young person to have a chat about dyslexia or anything else, let us know! Send us a dm or email [email protected]

06.01.2022 If you’re neurodivergent, have a mental health condition and/or have a disability, we need you! We have multiple accessible options for you to get involved with this research, whether that be having a quick chat over zoom, drawing a picture of your journey, filling out some a written survey or recording some audio messages. For most of us, the education system has taken more than it has given. Whether your learning experiences have been good or bad, we need to change this system so that ALL STUDENTS have their voices heard, their strengths recognised and access to an education which prepares them for the future. Do your bit. Send me a dm here or email [email protected] for more info

06.01.2022 Its true that dyslexia DOES NOT affect our eye sight, however one thing I discovered this week was that its something you might want to mention before having your eyes tested....For me, my letter naming speed is quite slow (and sometimes inaccurate), so it could seem like my eyesight is worse than it is. Despite all of this, I did end up needing reading glasses after all which to be honest....Im not sure how often I would really use them! I translate almost everything I read into audio these days! #dyslexia #dyslexiahacks #audiobooksforthewin

06.01.2022 As I’ve mentioned before, writing is my biggest struggle as a dyslexic student. Some days it works and some days it just doesn’t. Today, thankfully, was a day when my brain was able to communicate my ideas in written form. I’ve still never experienced ‘the flow’ that people speak of, but today it was like wading through water, rather than wading through cement. For that I am very grateful #celebratethewins #dyslexia #assignmentlife

05.01.2022 I found this message on the whiteboard of a study room i was in today. To all of the year 12s and uni students who are in the midst of exams- hang in there. You are not alone in the struggle- many are silently struggling along with you. This message tells me that people are struggling, but also that people care; there is kindness in this world and sometimes that kindness comes from complete strangers. #examstress #randomactsofkindness #hanginthere #positivevibes

04.01.2022 Does this happen to anyone else?? Im currently in that phase of my holidays where I am correcting all of the mistakes my exam brain made during study week.....unfortunately my bathroom still smells like perfume, my pants never recovered from the coffee stain and I never found my laptop charger.....also down $133 bucks....lucky we only have exams twice a year! #exambrain #clumsylife #losingit

03.01.2022 Little quote for your Saturday evening. 01.01.2022 Episode #4 is here! This week Shadia and I are tackling a problem that has unfortunately resulted in many awkward teacher conversations for us in the past....Without our classmates around us during online learning, we're not getting the consistent reminders about upcoming assessments that we usually get, meaning we have to rely EVEN MORE on our own organisational systems. Hope these strategies help you out What do you do to keep organised? How do you remember those pesky due dates?
