25.01.2022 Only one of this week's 31 earthquakes managed to crack the yellow dot barrier - a magnitude 2.0 off Cape Liptrap in VIC. We've had 14 earthquakes here in 2020, the largest a 3.2 back in June #earthquakes #Australia #DataScience

25.01.2022 Only 21 earthquakes located in the region last week, with a magnitude 2.5 near Korumburra VIC reportedly felt

24.01.2022 51 earthquakes detected last week, the largest a magnitude 3.0 just off King Island, northwest of Tasmania. A magnitude 1.0 earthquake near Keysborough in the Melbourne metropolitan area follows a 0.7 two days earlier

24.01.2022 Another 39 earthquakes added to the catalogue last week, with a magnitude 2.4 off Cape Liptrap in an ongoing sequence, and a 2.3 felt in Lara (near Geelong in VIC) that had 3 aftershocks. A burst of 8 earthquakes in the space of 6 hours near Yea ranged from magnitude 0.0 to 1.0.

23.01.2022 Our tectonic plate isnt just one solid piece being pushed north at the rate your fingernails grow - its made of different strength bits of rock being squished, and each little crumple is an earthquake. Here are our 40 crumples from last week, ranging from magnitude 0.3 to 2.9.

22.01.2022 Of last weeks 46 earthquakes, only three were above magnitude 2. Those in NSW were a 2.3 west of Mudgee and a 2.1 near Appin. A group of three earthquakes near Boort VIC occurred in a 9 hour period yesterday.

22.01.2022 You wouldn't watch Avatar on a GameBoy, and just like you need a 4K TV to appreciate a Blu-ray Disc video, you need a high resolution recorder to capture the quality of whatever earthquake sensor you choose to use. But sensors have limits too. Learn more at our website.

22.01.2022 This magnitude 3 earthquake occurred 10 minutes ago about 25km offshore, south of Apollo Bay. Anyone in the area feel it?

21.01.2022 There were two magnitude 3+ earthquakes last week. The 3.2 south of Cape Otway in VIC was followed by a 2.0 a few days later, and this mornings Cleve SA event has been updated to magnitude 3.4. Note that our "week" ends at 10am AEST Monday (midnight Sunday in Universal Time)

21.01.2022 51 earthquakes were located in the region last week, with a red dot finally making an appearance: a magnitude 4.2 southwest of Burra in South Australia on May 14 at 3:23 pm local time. A magnitude 3.5 earthquake near Lake Eyre coincidentally occurred about 13 hours later (just off the top left of the map)

20.01.2022 The two largest earthquakes last week were in South Australia: a 3.3 near Booleroo Centre and a 3.0 near Parachilna. Offshore Victoria saw two moderate earthquakes: a magnitude 2.1 off Cape Otway and a 2.0 off Cape Liptrap, both locations relatively active this year.

20.01.2022 Its been a while since weve seen an orange dot on the map. The revised magnitude of this earthquake was 3.2, occurring just north of Lake Burrinjuck in NSW, followed by a 1.5 the next day. Another small earthquake in Melbournes east was reported felt, magnitude 1.8.

20.01.2022 Actually, those events were only about 10km offshore south of Cape Liptrap - automatic place names arent always the best choice...

19.01.2022 A magnitude 3.1 earthquake occurred near King Island just a few minutes ago

19.01.2022 Here are the traces from the felling of the Hazelwood towers as recorded on our seismographs up to 200km away

18.01.2022 A little magnitude 2.5 #earthquake occurred about 60km south of #Canberra 15 minutes ago

18.01.2022 Magnitude 2.9 earthquake occurred about 10 minutes ago near Mt Baw Baw VIC.

17.01.2022 29 earthquakes were detected in our region last week, with a magnitude 2.1 near Snowtown in SA and a magnitude 2.0 in the southern Victorian Alps. Where you've got mountain ranges, don't be surprised if the earthquakes that formed them over millions of years continue to pop up!

17.01.2022 A magnitude 3.4 earthquake just occurred near Pekina in South Australia. Did it wake anyone?

17.01.2022 A few minutes ago there was a magnitude 2.9 earthquake near Burraga NSW. If you don’t know the area, it’s about half way between Goulburn and Bathurst.

17.01.2022 Week 41 coincidentally had 41 earthquakes in our region. The largest was a magnitude 3.1 near Snowtown SA, one of four earthquakes in the area over a 4-day period. Near Melbourne we saw a magnitude 1.4 and 1.8 near Queenscliff, and a 0.7 in the suburb of Keysborough.

17.01.2022 A small magnitude 1.9 earthquake near Pakenham VIC just before 3am has been reported as being felt by local residents

17.01.2022 A few minutes ago there was a magnitude 3.0 earthquake near Wedderburn in central Victoria

17.01.2022 The collapse of the towers was visible on our earthquake monitoring stations in the local area and up to 200km away, with the peak amplitude equating to ground motion from a magnitude 1.0 earthquake or a typical quarry blast

16.01.2022 This is how one 18 storey building moved during an earthquake. The blue dot is the grounds motion, the green is from a sensor in the middle of the building, and the red dot is a from sensor on the roof. This M6.1 earthquake was 130km away from the building and only moved it around by a few millimeters, but our high resolution strong motion accelerographs (SMA-HR) have such a wide range they can detect everything from tiny motions that are imperceptible to humans, all the way up to destructive shaking that can exceed the force of gravity.

16.01.2022 Taking the sensors from our Geosystems borehole accelerometer, the new Gecko SMA-XR provides a wider range high resolution solution for structural health and modal response analysis. +/-10g range, flat (3dB) amplitude from 0.2Hz to 1.6kHz. Learn more at kelunji.net

16.01.2022 Were receiving a few reports of this earthquake being felt. Its outside of the region that we monitor with our network, but see here for more information: https://earthquakes.ga.gov.au/event/ga2020qppqrr

15.01.2022 Last week we located 29 earthquakes in southeast Australia. The two largest were a magnitude 2.5 in Bass Strait, and a 2.6 about 40km southwest of Echuca on the VIC-NSW border (which was followed by a magnitude 0.6 aftershock a few days later)

14.01.2022 Magnitude 3.4 earthquake occurred around 12:30am AEST approx. 55km north-northwest of Tamworth. It has been felt in the surrounding area, let us know if you felt it!

13.01.2022 After technical difficulties last week, we now have 77 earthquakes for the fortnight. The largest was one of six quakes within 30 minutes, a magnitude 3.2 off Cape Liptrap VIC, felt in Walkerville. A few other clusters can be seen near Meeniyan VIC, Jamestown SA, and Boorowa NSW.

13.01.2022 We don't have earthquakes in this area often, but small events would go unnoticed due to sparse seismograph coverage. The largest earthquake we have on record in the area of this morning's magnitude 3.1 (50km west of Pooncarie NSW, 100km north of Mildura) was a 3.8 in 2014

12.01.2022 Last week we recorded two clusters of earthquakes: 9 near Spilsby Island in the Spencer Gulf of SA (magnitudes from 1.1 to 2.4) and 6 near Muswellbrook in NSW (1.5 to 2.5). A total of 58 earthquakes were located for the week.

12.01.2022 A magnitude 2.5 earthquake just outside the ACT was the largest event in our monitoring region last week. A majority of the week's 33 events were spread throughout SA ranging from magnitude 0.0 to 1.7, from south of Kangaroo Island to Parachilna in the northern Flinders Ranges

11.01.2022 The magnitude 3.1 earthquake near Pooncarie in southwest NSW, the 3.0 near Moulamein NSW and the 2.4 near Lake Boga VIC were all reportedly felt last week. Earthquakes off Cape Otway continue: a total of 10 in the last month, between magnitudes 1.2 and 3.2

03.01.2022 40 earthquakes last week. The swarm continues near Maldon in VIC. Largest event was a magnitude 2.5 southeast of Hallett in SA. Most earthquakes we detect are under magnitude 2, which is only possible with our high density seismograph networks & lots of time time analysing data!

03.01.2022 Its a year since we started sharing our weekly earthquake maps for southeastern Australia. Heres a quick animation fading through each week over the last 12 months. #earthquake #observatory #melbourne #adelaide #hobart #canberra #sydney #seismology #australia

03.01.2022 Our alarm network covers southeast NSW, so earthquakes in the north aren't processed in real time. The largest of the six earthquakes NW of Tamworth was magnitude 3.4, with a 2.4 aftershock. A number of magnitude 2+ earthquakes in S.A. added to the 47 event tally for the week

02.01.2022 We dont have earthquakes in this area often, but small events would go unnoticed due to sparse seismograph coverage. The largest earthquake we have on record in the area of this mornings magnitude 3.1 (50km west of Pooncarie NSW, 100km north of Mildura) was a 3.8 in 2014
