23.01.2022 Our Cape Gooseberries are ripening Cape gooseberry are in the same family as tomatos and taste like sweet/tart bubblegum flavoured Berrys. They fruit from late winter into spring - oh what a joy!! The casing turns translucent and acts as its own natural Lolly wrapping. From Peru this perennial grows really well in the Melbourne climate just needing the occasional water through the hot summer months. ... We love to eat them straight from the cape but is also delicious on cheese platters, they can be stewed, made into a special jam, frozen or dried. High in Vitamin C and antioxidants, it can also lower blood sugars and assist with eye health and they are yum! #edibleforestyv #capegooseberry #edibleforestnursery

20.01.2022 Today Jaimie and Luke our edible forest gardeners were working out in our sister business the Yarra valley estate. Why is this exciting you ask? Well using compost made on site from all our weeds, we did up one of the gardens with edible and non edible plants can you tell which ones? (Hints further down) Edible- society garlic, Cana lily, yarrow and aniseed hyssop all available in our nursery... Non edible but beautiful- athropodium, azalea

19.01.2022 Symphytum sp- Dwarf Compfrey. Compfrey is a great plant to have in the garden. Its small and compact, but the main unique feature is its a mineral accumulator; which means it has the ability to pick up a lot of hard to reach minerals (from the soil) that other plants cant get to and store them in a more bioavailable form and in high concentration in their leaves. Because of this, its great to pick some leaves and make a liquid fertiliser or simply just throw the leaves ...directly into your compost! The little bell shaped flowers are quite attractive in late winter and keeping the bees happy so we thinks its a double win! #edibleforestyv #compfrey #mineralaccumulator #happysoilhappyplants

16.01.2022 Time to introduce you to the 'Yellow Colossal' tomato. This is a great heirloom producing large, pale yellow fruit. It is a climber so does require staking. Did you know that yellow tomatoes have lower acidity than red varieties? And beefsteak fruits are typically less acidic as well. so this is the perfect tomato for you is you are looking for a tomato low in acidity. If you are going to take the time to grow a tomato, make it a large one, full of flavour and a little bit ...different! The Edible Forest nursery has these unique type of tomatoe plants for sale. Come and collect some when we re-open on the 4th November, or ask for an order form and drive over and collect (if you are within the 25km radius!) #edibleforestyv #yellowcolossal #tomatoseason

15.01.2022 Let us explain bugs....the good bugs and bad bugs!! We’ve captured a good example of both in our forest recently! The first is a grape moth caterpillar (bad!) but as we are located around the Yarra valley winery’s - it’s not unexpected. We will wait and keep checking but if it gets worse we may need to use an organic spray. The second good!! Spotted this lady bug larvae doing a great job eating the cherry aphids in our orchard ... That’s what we like to see!! #edibleforestyv #goodbugsbadbugs #goodbugs #badbugs #benificialpests #ladybugs #grapemoth #organicgardening #permaculture #edibleforest #spring #permaculturelife #permaculturegarden #melbournegardens #yarravalley

14.01.2022 Late Winter blooming flowers are beautiful and are planted with the purpose of attracting bees; purple is bee attracting. 14.01.2022 Our Blue Broom is flowering (Psoralea pinnata) as our Edible Forest is still establishing, we use the Blue Broom as one of our early establishment plants. They are quick growing & provides shelter for other plants. A nitrogen fixing plant (legume family), it’s leaves are high in nitrogen so great for our compost and the bees love it in early spring. So many uses! Be careful, it can be considered a weed so it’s always good to think before you plant but here in our contained forest we have no problems with it escaping. We are taking pre-orders for the Blue Broom in our nursery, so if you would love to have this nitrogen fixing, bee attracting plant in your garden- message us! #edibleforestyv #bluebroom #permaculturegarden

11.01.2022 This week in the Edible Forest we found these little self-seeded strawberry plants. The team have transplanted them into pots and placed in our hothouse for a few weeks to mature, before they are re-planted back in the Edible Forest. 08.01.2022 Some people take horseradish by mouth for urinary tract infections, kidney stones, fluid retention, infections of the respiratory tract, cough, achy joints (rheumatism), gallbladder disorders, sciatic nerve pain, gout, colic, and intestinal worms in children. 07.01.2022 Purple cauliflower gets its beautiful colour from the presence of the antioxidant anthocyanin, which is also found in red cabbage and red wine. Purple cauliflower also contains about 25% more vitamin A than white cauliflower. Milder in flavor than a white cauliflower it's sweeter, nuttier and can also be less bitter than a white cauliflower.... Purple and orange cauliflower are higher in antioxidants. Both contain anthocyanins, which may help to regulate your blood lipid and sugar levels and body weight, as well as help to lower your cancer risk. #purplecauliflower #antioxident #veggiegarden #edibleforestyv #medicinalplant #behealthy #vitaminA #growwhatyoueat

06.01.2022 It is so lovely to see some colour from pea flowers in the Edible Forest veggie garden this time of year. With the growing interest in edible flowers, it is very important to be specific with the variety of each plant. For example garden peas, (Pisum sativum) such as English peas, edible podded peas and snow peas are edible, sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus) are poisonous - especially the flowers and seeds. #winterharvest #peaflower #edibleforestyv #veggiegarden #growwhatyoueat #happygardener #gardening

06.01.2022 Who likes it HOT?

06.01.2022 Can you guess the type of tree from only the blossom? Need a hint? As its flowering so early in spring- it must be a stone fruit tree. Whats your guess? #edibleforestyv #stonefruitblossom #isoguessinggame

05.01.2022 Mulberry ‘Hicks Fancy’ fruit is a rich sweet berry, almost black in colour, that ripens slowly on the tree which means the harvest can be spread out over a few months! But be warned- they can turn your fingers red when you pick a lot of them! #edibleforestyv #mulbery #harvest

03.01.2022 What is the Ponderosa Pink Tomato? It is a large flat dark purplish-pink tomato. We call it a 'beefsteak' as it has outstanding flavour and did I mention that they are big! The ripe fruit is sweet and mild with low acidity, they are firm and meaty, are perfect for slicing and are almost seedless. We love them in burgers and sandwiches.
