24.01.2022 Finished hand painted tie for Natalie

24.01.2022 Amended hand painted tie design on the right from last week’s draft design!

23.01.2022 Painting for Molly and Phil’s Change of Plans invite

22.01.2022 New packaging inspired by my other business @graciekwancandyboxes This is my last order for 2020, so on that note, I just want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to all of you who have supported me and my business(es) this year! Particularly I want to thank everyone who purchased my beautiful Liberty London fabric face masks Mask-gate was one of the most stressful, exhausting and overwhelming experiences where my business literally went from zero to 1000 overnight and I ended up aba...ndoning it altogether for a while there. However it did essentially allow me to really go for it at launching my 'COVID-proof’ business Gracie Kwan, which has kept me going this year. And as a result I can now pick Edward Kwan back up with the wedding industry hopefully back to some normality again next year (but who knows really ). So thank you thank you thank you and I hope you all have an amazing Christmas and New Years break, and hopefully 2021 will be less of a shitshow!! xxx

22.01.2022 ADULT BEGINNER BALLET // FREE TRIAL CLASSES // Taking expressions of interest! First of all, apologies this is not painting related but bear with me!!! This is something I have been thinking about doing for a while, since I left my career as a lawyer and finally came home to my true self (i.e. a creative). ... My friend @winnie.au and I have been loosely discussing me possibly teaching a casual ballet class once a week to complete beginner adults, once she secures a studio in the CBD for her aerial hoops school @fine.line.studio. I am thinking of running some free trial classes in the near future to work out if there is interest and if people enjoy my teaching before I jump into anything! BENEFITS OF BALLET: - fitness - it is beautiful and fun - you’ll develop good posture and tone up your muscles - ballet and classical music is something that I feel in my soul. I know that’s a bit extra , but basically I hope that you can find passion and a therapeutic feeling through doing it REQUIREMENTS: Nothing - no fancy clothes or flexibility required. Come in your activewear and socks. ABOUT ME: I trained full-time in ballet for 7 years from the age of 13 at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School and then the Australian Ballet School under the guidance of Irina Konstantinova, Lisa Pavane, Tang Xiuyun and Wang Jiahong. I ended up changing career paths and worked as a commercial litigation and intellectual property lawyer and as a Judge’s associate over a 5 year period. After leaving the legal world at the end of 2019 to run my creative businesses @graciekwancandyboxes and @_edwardkwan, my newfound flexible timetable allows me to attend ballet classes twice a week at City Dance Centre for PURE ENJOYMENT. I would love to help other non-dancers to experience the pure enjoyment of ballet! Please DM me or email me at [email protected] if you are interested x

21.01.2022 One more shot of Natalie’s finished hand painted wedding tie

20.01.2022 @emma_wiggle and the boys in their custom green velvet bow ties I made for @thewiggles to perform in a few years ago! While I’m now only doing hand painted products, I will still do non-hand painted custom orders when I get requests, if it’s something I can do and make! Just email or DM me to discuss and I’ll tell you whether I can do it! I don’t advertise this on my website but I always get requests from time to time. (I have actually done a few face mask orders on the low down for customers who refuse to wear any face masks other than mine but I only have navy blue and black Liberty available)

20.01.2022 Take 2 of Natalie’s tie design on the left This looks nicer!!

20.01.2022 One more shot of Tina’s hand painted wedding ties

20.01.2022 Congrats to my customer Andrew for taking out the Lawyers Weekly Corporate Counsel Awards - Not-for-Profit Lawyer of the Year Award AND the Excellence award, all dappered up in his custom hand painted Edward Kwan bow tie for the Zoom ceremony! I finished Andrew’s order the week before Lockdown 1.0 started in March this year, and the Awards ceremony was originally meant to be held in the first week of Lockdown. It’s sad he didn’t get to wear his matching bow tie and pocket square to a glitzy ceremony IRL, but at least it didn’t go to waste! #zoom #2020

18.01.2022 My beautiful clients Tina + Stephen on their wedding day Stephen and his best man/brother wore custom hand painted ties made by me - if you scroll down my insta a bit you might recognize the design! Photography by @jamesdayweddings

17.01.2022 Thanks to the Law Institute of Victoria for including me in this month’s LIV Journal, alongside Maggie McGowan and Sarah Davidson in an article called ‘Lawyers Turned Entrepreneurs’! The link to the LIV Journal is below. I talk about why I left the law to work on my own business and how my legal experience has helped. As I say in the article, 2020 has been an absolute rollercoaster but I’m really proud of myself for how I have adapted and survived. And it is all still a wor...k in progress! https://www.liv.asn.au//Novem/11_LIJ_November2020.pdf.aspx

16.01.2022 Wedding invitations sent off for printing today for my customers This is one of my non-custom hand painted invitations, meaning it’s ready to go and all I need is your text content! I will be listing up all the non-custom invitations/info cards/rsvp cards/save the dates on the website for purchase this week

15.01.2022 My customers know how to celebrate New Years in style! One of my very first hand painted bow ties right there Thanks for the photo @ultraden and happy new year everyone!!!

14.01.2022 And this is how the painting looks as a Change of Plans invite!

13.01.2022 Draft hand painted tie design for Tina My brief was blush and champagne coloured flowers (any type) and native foliage

13.01.2022 Draft design for Amelia This is a combination of two of my past tie designs that Amelia liked

12.01.2022 Round 2 draft for Tina’s hand painted wedding neckties Different lighting in this pic, but I changed the dark pink branches to be two diff shades of green (so Tina can pick which shade they prefer) and lightened the shade of the pink flowers!

11.01.2022 Happy first Father’s Day yesterday to Edward Bragg & Co in their matchy matchy Liberty face masks and bandana bib @rosiei19

10.01.2022 @birds_of_summer in the H E L E N face mask. The perfectly placed pink flower right in the center of the mask is no accident - we discussed and planned it’s placement in depth I will go above and beyond for my customers!

09.01.2022 Finished custom hand painted bow tie for Maya and Rohan! Happy with this one and happy that a customer has finally chosen to use rose gold on their design I often try to incorporate a bit of rose gold in my designs but it never ends up being the chosen design haha. For this bow tie, I have also painted something sentimental to Maya and Rohan on the inside of the bow tie strap, which I will post a photo of on here after their wedding. It is really beautiful!

09.01.2022 The bow tie painting process

09.01.2022 @pl.jw in the T I N A face mask. I convinced him not to buy 2 navy masks from me and to get 1 floral looks good!!

08.01.2022 Painting Natalie’s wedding tie designed to complement her dress

07.01.2022 Bow tie painting process shot 2. Those of you who have followed me for a while may have noticed I no longer post painting time lapse videos! This is mainly because I started wanting to take my time with my painting, to ensure that it is nice and perfect but also because I just want to take my time with it! This means I can paint small sections and then take a break and resume painting another section when I’m really feeling it! So while I may take longer to complete my orders it also means that my customers can be sure that they will receive my best work and attention to detail!

07.01.2022 Last week I got a text from a friend saying that her phone memory popped up saying that I handed in my resignation from my lawyer job exactly a year ago! I had resigned on a whim with no proper business plan, and took this photo on my last day of work a month later, ready to build my hand painted wedding bow tie and tie empire Little did I know that I would actually be walking straight into a year featuring a pandemic where weddings would be banned, I would start a candy gi...ft box business Gracie Kwan Candy Boxes (very random, but I love it!), and I would burn myself out so badly selling compulsory face masks that I would completely lose interest and motivation in my original business, Edward Kwan. I am getting my mojo back slowly though and have been working on my wedding orders super slowly to make sure that I still do my 1000% best work (and can safely say I think I did do so with Tina’s order ). As restrictions hopefully start easing and weddings start hopefully returning next year, I would greatly appreciate if anyone in my network could share the work I do through Edward Kwan with any friends who are getting married!

05.01.2022 @tdkelly1 in the S I M O N E face mask - ordered from Japan, posted to Singapore and finally delivered to Tristan in hotel quarantine in SG

05.01.2022 Painting Tina’s wedding ties

04.01.2022 I recently did an interview for the LAABH Foundation, talking about my career as a lawyer, making the decision to leave the law to run my business Edward Kwan just before COVID hit, and how my now-main-income-earner Gracie Kwan Candy Boxes was born out of the pandemic during stage 4 lockdown. LAABH has a whole ‘Interview Corner’ dedicated to interviewing former lawyers who are now in completely different careers. While many lawyers are really passionate and fulfilled in their... jobs, it’s no secret that a lot of lawyers struggle to find that passion. It is quite a long interview but I think the questions and my answers are actually quite interesting so if you have time to read it, I hope that it can inspire you in some way or another. Whether that is to quit your stable career and pursue a super niche random small business or whether it is simply to encourage you to find that ‘spark’ within the career you’re already in. I also talk a bit about mindset and self-belief, which I believe is the most important ingredient!

04.01.2022 This was my very first hand painted bow tie order for Nat and Blake in 2015! And while my painting style and skill has evolved heeapppps since then to more intricate floral designs, I still love the simplicity of this design!

03.01.2022 Well this is cool!!! Today I tried out my Cricut Foil Transfer System on one of my non-custom wedding Save the Dates (the hand painted part printed just using my own printer) and isn’t it awesome?! Earlier this year I was lucky to be given a Cricut Maker to help me cut out my bow ties with precision. Cricut has released this new Foil Transfer System which is now available at Spotlight, or online from Big W and Harvey Norman, which I got to test out! The foil transfer toil use...s unique pressure-activation rather than heat, there are heaps of different coloured foil sheets to choose from and you can choose from fine, medium and bold effects. I’m not currently printing my own invitations - I send them off to a third party to print. However we can have a think about how this could work if anyone is interested in the foil effect! 03.01.2022 Nearly completed hand painted ties for Tina’s wedding Just need to paint something sentimental on the end of her fiancé’s tie, which is something I do quite often for my clients! On the bow ties it is usually painted at the back of the neck where it’s hidden from view
