24.01.2022 Hope to see you tonight for some dancing and listening to Floreal Ruíz. Stock up on tango before Easter! Covid update: "Strengthened travel advice for Greater Brisbane: Get tested and isolate until you receive a negative result if you have been in City of Brisbane and Moreton Bay Council region from 11 March 2021." https://www.covid19.act.gov.au

24.01.2022 Hi everyone, Thank you for coming last night! I was in a state of exhaustion (note to myself: don’t go to watch a difficult movie late on Sunday night), so I was quite wary of how I would manage the night, but I guess it went ok, seeing quite a few couples were still dancing at the last tanda. The theme last night was Floreal Ruíz. In some strange ways, this theme gelled well with my fatigue and made a different sort of flow. ... I love his recordings with Troilo, but those are quite complex and subtle, so it’s difficult to find a spot for them when I have a short milonga. It falls really flat if I play those at the wrong place in the night: it can kill the energy of the room. Floreal Ruíz sang with De Angelis’ orquesta, as well as Troilo’s (and others). I tend to think of Carlos Dantes and Julio Martel when it comes to the singers in De Angelis's orquesta, and I had completely overlooked Ruíz’s recordings until last weekend. I am not a big fan of De Angelis, but i realised there are some gems. So I made a tanda. That was the 7th tanda of the night (who’s counting?) the tango tanda just before the second vals tanda. I thought it was rather nice. And a bit later, I played a Troilo tango tanda with Ruíz (the one before the second milonga tanda). They are not the easiest, but oh how I love them the subtlety and melancholia. The third song of this tanda, La noche que te fuiste, is one of my favourite pieces. It breaks my heart every time. The third vals tanda of the night was also by Troilo and Ruíz. A couple of them were in duets one with Alberto Marino and the other with Edmundo Rivero. There’s something special about the duets they are so pretty. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the night! A few people commented on the tone of the music last night being different - the underlying cause might have been not so good (my lack of sleep) but I hope the resulting output brought you some joy. Have a lovely Easter, and see you in two weeks. Cheers, https://www.dropbox.com/s/4gt9aqm31wbybhn/20210329.pdf?dl=0
