25.01.2022 After a breakfast PD session with PIA about regional planning and discussing the importance of data it was a little coincidental to come back to the office and discover this old document while searching through some old files. Population in 1979: 162,062, population in 2006 (current RLUS basis): 193,990, population in 2016: 222,356. In other words the population of Greater Hobart grew by similar amounts in the 27 years between 1979 to 2006 than the 10 years from 2006 to 2016.

25.01.2022 We don't often get a chance to down tools, but today was a fabulous team day with a wonderful demonstration of team work after Emma fell into the Picton River #eraplanning #rafting #tahune #couldnotwantabetterteam

25.01.2022 This week the first stage of the Greater Glenorchy Plan project commenced with 'Beyond the Curtain'. ERA are leading the consultant team (Terroir, Playstreet and SGS Economics and Planning) to deliver the next precinct planning component of the project, which we commenced the situational analysis for a few weeks ago with our site familiarisation to the Claremont, Glenorchy and Moonah activity centres. We are looking forward to seeing the stories and final narratives that wi...ll come out of this initial engagement process and how it will inform the precinct planning. #beyondthecurtain #placemaking #vision #planningforthefuture #precinctplanning #planningmatters #eraplanningandenvironment

25.01.2022 We are looking for a new team member!

25.01.2022 The last couple of months have been long and relentless for us but tonight we have a little reason to celebrate and remind us that the hard work is worth it...an award for the Kelcey Tier Master Plan for Devonport City Council and a commendation against tough competition from Leigh Woolley for the Freycinet Peninsula Master Plan. We get to work with a fantastic group of subconsultants and the efforts are a result of great team work. Thanks to our clients for the opportunities! And well done to all the other #PIATASawards2019 winners

25.01.2022 It was amazing how quickly the snow set in on the drive home from a day of site visits in Launnie #snowstorm #midlands #sitevisits

24.01.2022 The planners at ERA can attest to often being asked what is it we do and then struggling to find a concise but comprehensive answer to the complexity of our profession. Now the Planning Institute is Australia has done it for us! #pia #planningmatters #eraplanning

24.01.2022 This is an insightful opinion piece by the NSW Minister for Planning that is as relevant to us as other states, emphasising the important links between population projections, national migration policies, economic activity and people living in cities #planningmatters #nationalsettlementstrategy

24.01.2022 A big day discussing the Tourism Master Plan for the TWWHA. Lots of insights to take forward to the next part of the project and look forward to further engagement as we continue working towards a draft #twwha #tourismmasterplan #engagement #movingtowardsthetensions #eraplanningandenvironment #noagroup #culturalheritagemanagementaustralia #sgseconomicsandplanning

23.01.2022 Our next working remotely insights are from Mark OBrien who joined ERA two years ago this week... ERA has been working from home for a few months now, with the transition occurring more smoothly than expected. Personally, I have been enjoying spending more time with my wife Lauren, a fellow town planner who has also made the shift to our makeshift home office (or should I say offices; Lauren gets the penthouse by the way, and Im firmly grounded).... Like many of you, I would say that I have mixed feelings about returning to the office. What I value most about the office environment is the opportunity to offer help and bounce questions and ideas off colleagues; this can be done online of course but its far less efficient and doesnt occur organically. What I will miss most about the home office is the flexibility to set my own pace. On another note, I found it interesting to decide what stationary I needed to bring home and what I didnt think essential. Ive included a picture of my favourite stationary items that transcend office location (nerd alert); a scale ruler bought travelling in Sweden and a mechanical pencil gifted from my father in law.

23.01.2022 James Hill our Senior Environmental Scientist recently completed an on-site Natural Values Assessment for a private client to assist with a planning permit application for a new dwelling on the Freycinet Peninsula. Biodiversity impacts are a common consideration in planning permit assessments and in this instance the site was covered by the Biodiversity Overlay under the planning scheme. The Natural Values Assessment in this instance provided recommendations for micro sitin...g of access to the land and mitigation measures associated with construction and environmental risk mitigation. James, is an experienced and qualified ecologist and not only assists with our larger environmental impact assessment projects under the management of our Environmental Team, but frequently helps our Planning Team out with small scale ecological assessments for planning applications #naturalvaluesassessment #planningpermitapplications #eraplanningandenvironment

22.01.2022 Its disturbing that this type of segregation still goes on today #equality #placesforeveryone #cities #socialhousing #eraplanningandenvironment

22.01.2022 We have been talking about our time working remotely and in isolation and what the experience had been like for everyone. Thanks to a great idea from Cumulus Studio thought we would share what we have been thinking about. Our newest planner Monica has delivered the first contribution... "I moved back to Hobart from Melbourne in January this year to start work with ERA, and the Covid-19 pandemic hit about a month later. Since then, Ive been planning from home. Life has change...d for all of us over the last couple of months. Personally, I found it a prime time to adopt a new furry friend, which has definitely helped with the transition to working from home. Pippa is an active labradoodle puppy who enjoys early morning walks, chewing socks, and is in training to be my assistant planner. Professionally, we at ERA continually chat about how Covid-19 can change the world and the way we live for the better. Our role in society has never been greater, as we can lead the community in shaping our environments in this new world. I hope that when life returns to our new normal, we remember the lessons from this time, such as the importance of our health, enjoying our surroundings, and spending time with loved ones. It is an opportune time to consider how Tasmanian cities and communities can be better places to live, that our homes are places we want to spend time in, our workplaces are safe, we have adequate and appropriate transport infrastructure to move us between places, and how we best utilise and protect our public spaces for the enjoyment of everyone. "

22.01.2022 This article popped up on our LinkedIn feed and we thought it was worth sharing #theenvironmentinplanning #cityplanning #eraplanningandenvironment

22.01.2022 We were lucky enough to assist Cumulus Studio and PWS with the approvals on this one. Things are looking a little different on the old air strip now. Great job Cumulus

21.01.2022 After an amazing 3 months travelling Frances Beasley has joined us ERA working across our engagement and planning teams. Frances brings experience in both the Tasmanian and NSW systems and is working towards her bushfire practitioner accreditation #eraplanningandenvironment

20.01.2022 In 2019, ERA assisted Purcell with the preparation of a Conservation Management Plan for the Treasury Complex and public buildings in Hobart. Last week our work on this was acknowledged with a PIA Tas Awards for Planning Excellence (Best planning ideas - small project). Well done Purcell. It was great to work with you on this project #piatasawards2020 #heritage #planning

19.01.2022 Emma was lucky enough to participate in this discussion on Tuesday and enjoyed the opportunity to listen to the wealth of experience in the room and to talk about the needs and future of women in business

19.01.2022 A couple of pit stops for Frances and Emma, to enjoy the Tassie landscape on a long road trip from Hobart to Smithton. Sunset is such a beautiful time #tasmania #centralplateau #landscapes #sitevisits #roadtrip

18.01.2022 This one has been a little while in the works, but it is exciting to see the Battery Point Slipyards Master Plan that we helped prepare out or public comment. Head to www.yoursay.hobartcity.com.au to view the plan #planningmatters #publiccomment #eraplanning

18.01.2022 An inspirational approach to redesigning cities for people. Thanks to Natalia Weglarz for sharing at the last PIA board meeting #planningmatters #peoplefriendlycities

17.01.2022 Our planning services at ERA extend over a broad range of roles and projects. The Wilkinsons Point amendment has been one where we have assisting Council in fulfilling its role as planning authority by providing independent expert advice to its elected members #planningmatters #planningassessment #eraplanningandenvironment

16.01.2022 It is great to see the implementation of some of the projects under the Freycinet Peninsula Master Plan. It’s not often that we get to see a master plan that we have worked on move so quickly to implementation.

16.01.2022 Public Engagement Sessions TWWHA Tourism Master Plan We are still accepting registrations for the public engagement sessions in Bothwell, Strahan, Devonport, Deloraine, Launceston and Hobart(Brighton) next week and the following. ... Just email [email protected]. Registrations not required for the drop-in sessions.

15.01.2022 An insightful presentation by Trooper Sanders this morning about being careful of inherent biases in data and the risks of reinforcing negative past practices in embracing AI for the planning of our cities and places #puacongress19 #planningmatters #eraplanning

15.01.2022 Today marks the start of National Reconciliation week across Australia. At ERA Planning and Environment we acknowledge the traditional owners of the land that we live and work on and pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging. Over the last 18 months we have had the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of cultural values in Tasmania through some of our projects. Our understanding is however only scratching the surface and continued learning about country and cult...ure is but one small commitment towards #reconciliation. For us at ERA we live in the country of the Muwinina people: under the shadow of the mountain called kunanyi. Tasmanian Aboriginal - palawa - people have lived here for tens of thousands of years. They have cared for country and coexisted with plants, animals, birds and marine life, for many, many generations. The words of Rocky Sainty "We are the land, country and she is us" stay with us at all times. As Planning Institute of Australia members, we also support the reforms set out in The Uluru Statement from the Heart #voice #treaty #truth.

15.01.2022 Understanding how our planning system in Tasmania was created and changed over time, helps to put current proposed reforms into context #planning #planningmatters #eraplanningandenvironment #tasmania #majorprojects

14.01.2022 Here are some of the first details for those planning related nerds out there. I know we will be paying close attention in our office as it rolls out #hobartcitydeal #thefutureofhobart #strategicplanning #eraplanning

14.01.2022 As we wait to hear about what emergency changes they will make to the planning system in Tasmania, these principles provide a useful guide to making sure that as a collective profession we do what we can to contribute to keep peoples lives and livelihoods going through the crisis and preparing for the recovery. This includes keeping the planning system running as close to normal as possible #planningmatters #adapting

13.01.2022 Melbourne spends 4 times more on public transport funding per capita than Hobart. Surely we can do better? #betterplanning #planningandtransport #planningmatters

12.01.2022 A quick video featuring one of our projects, the Callington Mill Whisky Distillery that we are working on with Cumulus Studio #eraplanning

12.01.2022 After a massive effort, the Greater Glenorchy Plan is out for consultation! A big thank you to our team of sub-consultants on this project, SGS Economics and Planning, Terroir and Playstreet for all their work over the last couple of months. It has been a great opportunity for us and we are proud of our research and the document that we have prepared #teamwork #planningmatters #cityplanning #precinctplanning #hobartcitydeal #eraplanningandenvironment

12.01.2022 Caroline is focussed and busy working on the public engagement process for the Department of State Growth’s south east traffic solutions. This project is one of our engagement only projects where we are assisting the client to facilitate public information and feedback rather than providing planning advice. ERA currently specialise in three types of work: planning, environment and engagement #engagementprojects #eraplanning

12.01.2022 One of the more significant projects that we have been working on over the last 12 months at ERA Planning & Environment has been the Tourism Master Plan for the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. A few weeks ago the draft master plan was released for public comment and was recently extended until 25 June 2020 as a response to COVID-19. Being lead consultant on this project has been an enormous privilege for us, with the opportunity to work with the Tasmania Parks and W...ildlife Service as well as our sub consultant collaborators: Cultural Heritage Management Australia, SGS Economics and Planning, the Noa Group and trusty editor Mel Roome at Hitsend. It has been a challenging but rewarding project: preparing a first of its kind document, on a topic which has significant public interest. We look forward to hearing from the community and stakeholders over the next few months. The draft plan can be found at: https://dpipwe.tas.gov.au//tasma/twwha-tourism-master-plan See more

11.01.2022 This looks like an interesting event!

11.01.2022 We wish all our clients and colleagues a Merry Christmas and happy New Year. May you all have lots of time to rest and spend time with family and friends. We thank you for all your support through 2018 and we look forward to collaborating with everyone again in what is set to be another big year. The office is now closed until 8 January 2019.

11.01.2022 Love the way this article explores the architecture of the Three Capes lodges and how the whole team, including us, are acknowledged at the end #eraplanningandenvironment

11.01.2022 Our planning services at ERA extend over a broad range of roles and projects. The Wilkinson’s Point amendment has been one where we have assisting Council in fulfilling its role as planning authority by providing independent expert advice to its elected members #planningmatters #planningassessment #eraplanningandenvironment

10.01.2022 This week the first stage of the Greater Glenorchy Plan project commenced with Beyond the Curtain. 10.01.2022 Parking Day organised by the Tasmanian Young Planners is this Friday. So come along and see how we can transform parking spaces into an urban oasis #parkingday2020 #piatasYP #planningmatters

10.01.2022 Love the excitement building. ERA were lucky enough to help John, the Callington Mill Distillery and Cumulus Studio through the approvals process including a rezoning and DA #callingtonmill #singlemalt #whisky #heritage #tasmania #southernmidlands #eraplanningandenvironment

09.01.2022 It was a lovely sunny day for our walkabout Boat Harbour Beach today #masterplanning #communityengagement #eraplanning

09.01.2022 Over the past 12 months we have been working with Notre Dame Priory to prepare a planning scheme amendment that would enable the establishment of a monastery on their property at Jerusalem Estate near Colebrook in the Coal River Valley. This is a beautiful and extensive agricultural property that will provide a fitting setting for a monastery in the benedictine tradition where they will live and work off the land. The amendment request has now been submitted to Southern Midlands Council and we look forward to working with Council and the Tasmanian Planning Commission to bring the vision to life #planningschemeamendment #specificareaplan #eraplanningandenvironment

08.01.2022 This weeks working from home update is from Caroline Lindus, who has been with ERA for just over four years.. "We have been working from home for about 10 weeks now. For the majority of our working from home experience, Ive also had my three children schooling from home too. This was a much more challenging experience than I had initially anticipated; the analogy of a computer screen with 25 browsers open seemed to be spot on for how my brain was working during that time. ER...A provides in-house planning support to Councils as well as private clients, so i found myself in effect remotely working for multiple organisations which does get hectic! Im very grateful to our understanding clients who didnt bat an eyelid when emails were responded to at odd hours, or phone calls or zoom meetings were interrupted by small children with very important questions. Now that the kids are back at school, Ive had more time to reflect on the experience. Ive realised that the hustle and bustle of an office is like caffeine to me at the start of the day, getting me going, motivated and focused, and Im missing that and the company of my colleagues. But Im appreciating the slower pace of life, and being able to admire the changing seasons, from my home office. Im thinking a mixture of working from home and in the office could be the perfect solution for our family as we transition to whatever the new normal is, post Covid19."

08.01.2022 With remote working continuing to be the norm for us, we take every opportunity we can to catch up as a team in person. Last week half the team managed to head off to Shambles Brewery for a beer and burger. Shambles is a project we helped get off the ground (in a very little way) by obtaining its planning and occupancy permits #teamwork #eraplanningandenvironment

08.01.2022 A big congratulations to our Caroline Lindus, who has successfully completed her certificate in engagement

08.01.2022 We have been lucky enough to work on with the Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority and Liminal Architecture in preparing this application. It is an exciting and sensitive vision for the site #cascadefemalefactory #newvisitorcentre #eraplanningandenvironment

07.01.2022 As of next week the ERA Planning and Environment staff will be primarily working remotely. Our systems are already set up for remote access in a way that retains our security protocols, but we are taking a bit of time this week to make sure everyone is comfortable and well set up for what could, in such uncertain times, be quite a few weeks or months. We believe it is important to make our contribution to #reducingthecurve and also to look after the well being of our staff, c...lients and colleagues by adopting a practice of #socialdistancing. We are electing to use teleconference and video conferencing and reduce face to face meetings and are adapting our stakeholder and community engagement approaches as necessary. The office phone will be diverted through to our mobiles. Importantly though, our commitment to our clients and the quality of our work remain unaltered and we will be available as usual via telephone or email #eraplanningandenvironment #smallbusiness #adaptability #teamwork See more

07.01.2022 Plane flights are always a good way to get your planning geek fix #landusepatterns #urbandevelopment #cities #planningmatters #eraplanning

06.01.2022 With more time in the morning before work, Frances in our office has been listening to podcasts, and recently the Making Sense Podcast with Sam Harris and Matt Mullenweg (episode 194). In the episode, Matt Mullenweg (founder of WordPress and Automattic) discussed the concept of distributed teams, a remote setup which a lot of us have recently had to adopt. Many organisations, including us at ERA Planning & Environment are currently trying to figure out how to work well as... a distributed team, with applications such as Slack and Zoom helping us to stay connected with each other. Being able to respond and adapt to this change in an innovative way, will enable us to be more resilient into the future. In the podcast, Matt Mullenweg provides insight into how we can maintain productivity during this time of quick transition to working as a distributed team and in particular, highlights the many opportunities for innovation that come with it. Who knows, it might also change the way our cities look and function into the future #newwayofworking #adaptation #innovaton #planningforthefuture #eraplanningandenvironment

06.01.2022 The Boat Harbour Beach Master Plan is now out for public comment. This has been a lovely little project to work on with the Council and community along with Cumulus Studio and The Noa Group. A copy of the document can be viewed at http://www.warwyn.tas.gov.au/yoursay #masterplans #communityengagement #eraplanning.

05.01.2022 The new year is now in full swing at ERA with our new team members started and just about a full house in the office. Just missing Claire Watt and our grads, Ivan and Jess #newyear #excitingtimesahead #eraplanningandenvironment

05.01.2022 Over the past couple of months we have been working hard with our subconsultants to get out the door the final strategic documents for a number key projects for us. We love doing strategic work and each of these documents have created interest and discussion along the way #planningmatters #strategicplanning #masterplans #eraplanningandenvironment

04.01.2022 We had a little morning tea in our office this morning with some Queens Pastry r u ok doughnuts to check in with each other in the midst of what has been a busy few months #mentalhealthawareness #ruok

03.01.2022 Any existing or potential tourism operators might be interested in a workshop that Peter Walker from Cumulus Studio and Emma from our office are running about development, planning schemes and working through the assessment process at the upcoming TICT state conference.

03.01.2022 One of our projects hit the local papers today. With the refining recently approved by the Commission the permit application for the Callington Mill Whisky Distillery is now on public exhibition #eraplanning

02.01.2022 We have a beautiful still and crisp evening in Strahan for our regional workshops on the TWWHA Tourism Master Plan. Great input from the workshop participants with anyone else welcome for the drop in session which starts at 6pm to 7.30pm #tourismmasterplan #publicengagement #regionalworkshops #eraplanning

02.01.2022 Our regular 15 minute catch up in the morning is an important way that we are all keeping in touch with each other, in the absence of walking into our office and having a quick natter. Its not mandatory and often we are short a team member or two because of other commitments (like today). It is something that we all enjoy and value with an opportunity to laugh. We are also discovering the benefit of having two of our staff social distancing on the North East coast and the North West coast so that we can still do our site visits when absolutely necessary without travelling out of our local area #teambuilding #adapting #eraplanningandenvironment

02.01.2022 It’s disturbing that this type of segregation still goes on today #equality #placesforeveryone #cities #socialhousing #eraplanningandenvironment

01.01.2022 James our Senior Environmental Scientist who joined ERA in February this year has our latest update on working through COVID-19, reflecting on our new temporary office space (until our new permanent home is ready in 2021): "After several months of working from home and in isolation, it feels great to have a new space to work from. Some of the team have chosen to continue to work from home and a few team members have taken the opportunity to work in the new office all or some of the time. I will be working here half the time and it has been good to have the opportunity for casual conversation with other team members like we used to. The new space with lots of breakout areas and a serviced kitchen area will make the continuing transition from our old home to our new through continued social distancing easy. It also has a great view!"

01.01.2022 Was a great morning touring around Lightsview in Adelaide with Marion Thompson after our PIA board meeting yesterday. Its amazing to see how much dwelling and amenity you can fit into a 4m wide lot! A great JV between Renewal SA and Peet.
