25.01.2022 Separation anxiety is a hard thing for a lot of horses and their owners. Some people keep their horses separate from other horses thinking that if they don't form friendships then they won't have a problem. Horses are herd animals, if you watch a herd of horses out in a paddock you will at times see them scattered out on their own, but if something causes concern, you will see them come back and form a close herd again, safety in numbers. Something that we need to understand... is that a horses instinct of survival will kick in at moments of stress. We can help them with consistant groundwork to begin to learn to think their way through a problem, and not panic, the other benefit is that we form a close partnership with our horse through time on the ground. This partnership and trust then carries on into the saddle, it also helps the horse feel confident in situations that before may have sent the horse into a anxiety wreck. We are not with our horses 24/7 so when we are not their our horses need to be with others of their kind, friends , forage and freedom are the foundation needed for your horse to remain healthy happy and to feel safe. Seeing another horse over the fence is not enough, they need to touch, to scratch each other , and to play. Even if it is only for a few hours a day, please allow your to horse to be a horse and not isolate him from other horses, you will have a lot less behaviour problems as well. Happy horse, Happy owner Deb MacCallum

23.01.2022 Are you going away for Christmas/ New Year, have you left it too late or do you have too many animals to put in a boarding kennel. Have you thought of getting ...a pet sitter, I come to your place, so not only do your pets get to stay in their own place, I also can water plants, put bins in/out, and bring the mail in. I have vast experience with all creatures great and small, with horses being my life passion.I notice the small things and I am very vigilant with my visits. I live in Summerholm and can visit surrounding areas in a 30 km radius. Call Deb for a chat and quote 0400932092

20.01.2022 The way to a horses heart is through understanding, trust takes time to build, and is easily broken, there are no short cuts to a good partnership, you may get your horse to do what you want, but if you always think about how your horse feels about it, you may make different choices. This all takes time, and yes you will make mistakes, and you will never stop learning, stay open to that and remember to enjoy the journey.

12.01.2022 On the bit is about the whole horse moving freely forward without resistance , the head carriage is what comes naturally after the body is in balance.

12.01.2022 Well the New Year is upon us, what are your horsie plans for 2020, notice that I did not say resolution, we all know what happens to those. A plan is something that we can work on, bite size piece at a time, we can write it down, we can adjust it, but we do need to move forward with it. Mine is to get out more with my ponies, for pleasure, and with a few comps thrown in there, with the relationship and connection being the number one priority. So put it in writing girls a...nd guys, comment on this post, it as good as a handshake, you are then committed, but also remember that you can change your plan at any time. Edited to add: to say that I want get out more with my ponies is not a plan, I now need to form a plan , so I can make myself accountable, most competitions already have dates, so I need to decide which ones that I want to go to, next I need to decide exactly what other activities I am interested in, clinics, trails, cattle work, obstacles, there are so many choices, along with which horse I want to take. I am going to make 2020 the year of doing, who is coming with me, if not in person, then in spirit, and I would love you all to post your adventures on here, so I can follow you too. I will post here when I have that plan written down.

04.01.2022 A great video explaining that you do not fix a brace in your horse by focusing on the horses head, you may feel it in your hands, but it is by using lateral movements that will help your horse become softer and more balanced. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=235832450945875&id=174051142607406&d=null&vh=e

03.01.2022 When working with your horse What is the outcome that you want? How do you want your horse to feel about you?... Are you a teacher or a dictator? If you are learning something new or struggling with something, how would you like someone to help you? Then be that person for your horse. He isn't born knowing what to do, every interaction you have with him is teaching him something, he is a product of his environment, make it a healthy and fair environment , so that he can learn , and you will create the partner that most people only dream of.
