24.01.2022 Today is R U OK? day. But really, EVERY day is for checking in with those you love, those you know, or those you think may be struggling. Ask the question today, and then really listen to the answer. Direct them to help in whatever form is available, accessible and acceptable to them. Follow up later to make sure the person is OK.... And then ask this of someone every day, every time you suspect the answer is "no - Im really not OK". Just having someone ask this question can increase our feelings of connectedness and self-worth, both of which are protective against suicide risk. But not everyone who is not OK is contemplating suicide - there are many other ways that mental health issues can manifest, including substance abuse, risk-taking behaviour, social withdrawal, anger.....the list is long. Be aware, be open to the question and the answer, and have a plan of how to help.

24.01.2022 Some insights and support from the amazing team behind COPE. COVID-19 has been, and continues to be, a very challenging time for most of us. The reasons for these challenges are many and varied. New Mums and Dads are likely to have been feeling some of the things mentioned here, and much more besides. Now more than ever remember to stay in touch with those you know with new babies at home. FaceTime or Skype them to see the new baby in action if you cant visit in person. Drop meals at the door, or order a bag of groceries to be delivered from your local shop. Be a listening ear, a willing errand-runner, or an advocate for their right to shield their baby from the world a little longer. At Eternal we use the tools provided by COPE to assist us to address and protect the psychological welfare of the families we care for.

12.01.2022 Today is International Day of Older Persons, when we acknowledge and celebrate the significant contributions of our senior members of society. At Eternal, one of our favourite older persons is Nanna Betty, who knits the beautiful beanies that all our babies receive. We’ve lost track now of how many she has knitted for us, but it would be many hundreds of little head warmers. Betty is Tania’s maternal grandmother, and one of her favourite people in all the world. Tania is grateful every day to have Nanna Betty in her life, and the lives of her children James and Evie, who love their Little Nan. We'd love to see some photos of your babies in Nanna Betty's beanies so we can show her how much they are loved! Please feel free to share here or email to us on [email protected]

12.01.2022 Always fit your own oxygen mask before helping others. Today on R U OK? Day, during Women's Health Week, we want to encourage all our wider Eternal family to ask your selves "Am I OK?". Check in with yourself now and do a quick scan from head to toe. Are you feeling rested? Fed and watered? Have you got up and moved in the last hour? When did you last smile or laugh? Do you feel comfortable in your own skin today? Are you feeling anxious or worried, angry and withdrawn, inade...quate and guilty? The term "self-care" gets used extensively - I feel like I see it everywhere, in fact - but that's because it is incredibly important. You can't be the best version of you without putting some effort into creating and maintaining that, just as I keep telling my teenage son he can't expect to do well in his school subjects if he hasn't done the work he needs to first. In order to be present, engaged and reliable for the people that matter in your life - whether your family, friends, workmates, clients or wider community - you need to first be whole and safe in yourself. If you don't think you are achieving that, you need to find ways to support yourself and ensure the resources you need are available. Or enlist the help of other people, either in your personal life or by consulting a professional. Just as you would show kindness to others today, by asking R U OK?, show yourself that compassion, check in and ask yourself that question, recognize the significance of the answers and seek the help you need. You are WORTH the effort and work it will take to make you feel whole and safe and OK. You DESERVE that time and effort to be spent on you. You can't provide a safe, supportive, nurturing space for others, a devoted and engaged listening ear, and a brain attuned to solutions and encouragement, if you can't first provide yourself with the same level of care and support. Our senior midwife Alana is always reminding me that a tank can only hold so much petrol, and if I give my petrol away to others, without putting anything back in the tank, it will eventually run dry. This is bad news for me, but also bad news for those people who are relying on me, and those who I might otherwise have been able to help. ALWAYS fit your own oxygen mask first, before helping others fit theirs. 11.01.2022 For those couples considering The Positive Birth Experience (Hypnobirthing Australia) course, get in touch with Erin ASAP! We cannot recommend this class highly enough.

11.01.2022 One third of women in Australia are living with some form of incontinence. Thats an incredible number, and one that we have the power to reduce with resources readily available to us. Pregnancy and birth are both independent risk factors for urinary incontinence, and education and support with regard to pelvic floor function and rehabilitation can help reduce the likelihood of an ongoing issue. This education should commence antenatally and continue postnatally to provide m...aximum benefit. Apart from the obvious quality-of-life reasons for reducing the incidence of incontinence, there is a health economics imperative as well, with estimates that physiotherapy treatment of urinary stress incontinence (due to muscle weakness or damage) can save the health system $16,000 per person in ongoing medical costs. Strengthening your pelvic floor and maintaining that strength can go a long way toward reducing your long term risks of urinary incontinence. This is best learned initially under the direction of a pelvic floor physiotherapist, such as our lovely and knowledgeable Eternal physios Alyssa and Annabel. If you want to start the process on your own, maybe while waiting to see the physio (they are very popular - because they are so good at what they do!), the Continence Foundation of Australias PELVIC FLOOR FIRST website is an excellent resource. http://www.pelvicfloorfirst.org.au//pelvic-floor-muscle-ex Maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding smoking, participating in regular exercise and eating a healthy diet that benefits the bladder and bowel will all help to reduce the likelihood of incontinence. 02.01.2022 IMPORTANT UPDATE - Consulting Arrangements In an effort to increase my capacity to care for you during your fertility journey, and to consolidate my working wee...k, I have made some changes to my consulting arrangements. For those of you planning a pregnancy in the near future, currently receiving treatment or about to embark on treatment, I have modified how and where I will be consulting. I am not leaving the wonderful team at TasIVF, simply adjusting the way I provide care. The nursing, laboratory, theatre and administration staff at TasIVF are second to none and I will continue to utilise their support for your Intrauterine Insemination cycles, IVF/ICSI cycles or donor egg/sperm treatment as required. I have worked in the medical suites at TasIVF for 3 years, but from the 17th August 2020 I will be consulting at Eternal Womens Health. This is conveniently located "upstairs" at Level 1, 2 Melville Street HOBART. Outlined below is a summary of the changes I have made. I acknowledge that during this period of transition there may be some teething issues but I hope that as a team we can transition your care smoothly. NEW PATIENTS Initial consultations will be held at my private Obstetric and Gynaecology practice - Eternal Womens Health. Patients who do not yet need, or are not yet ready to have Assisted Reproductive Treatments will have any ongoing fertility care at this location. I can offer investigation of sub-fertility, ovulation induction and cycle tracking at Eternal Womens Health. CURRENT PATIENTS All appointment bookings will be transitioned to Eternal Womens Health. As much as possible we will endeavour to limit changes to appointments, and hopefully minimise any inconvenience to you! If you require ASSISTED REPRODUCTION (such as Intrauterine Insemination or IVF) I will facilitate your care through TasIVF and continue to look after you during the journey from planning to (hopefully) pregnancy. All cycle scanning will be performed at Eternal Womens Health (with me). If you have any administrative or appointment queries please contact the team at Eternal Womens Health on 6220 1350. For clinical enquiries please contact the following: * IVF or IUI treatment - Nursing Team @ TasIVF on 6212 7700 * Ovulation Induction, cycle tracking, investigation of sub-fertility - Dr Emily Price @ Eternal on 6220 1350 As I have probably said to many of you in person - I am still the same person, I will still offer the same type and standard of care - it will just be from a different office! I look forward to seeing you soon, Emily

01.01.2022 Always fit your own oxygen mask before helping others. Today on R U OK? Day, during Womens Health Week, we want to encourage all our wider Eternal family to ask your selves "Am I OK?". The term "self-care" gets used extensively - I feel like I see it everywhere, in fact - but thats because it is incredibly important. You cant be the best version of you without putting some effort into creating and maintaining that, just as I keep telling my teenage son he cant expect to do well in his school subjects if he hasnt done the work he needs to first. In order to be present, engaged and reliable for the people that matter in your life - whether your family, friends, workmates, clients or wider community - you need to first be whole and safe in yourself. If you dont think you are achieving that, you need to find ways to support yourself and ensure the resources you need are available. You cant provide a safe, supportive, nurturing space for others, a devoted and engaged listening ear, and a brain attuned to solutions and encouragement, if you cant first provide yourself with the same level of care and support.
