24.01.2022 It's really important NOT to feed wildlife. Honestly I know that we all love having animals around us, but it's super important to let animals forage for their own food. Here's some reasons why: Creates reliance on humans, which means that once the humans have gone, animals can starve Can cause agression towards humans Causes poor diets - ie, ducks and bread (huge no-no) Upsets the local ecosystem by allowing more dominant birds to take over (this is not evolution in ...process, as it is human induced). Jason Graham and his mum have been big on the wildlife scene for a while, and his mum has been proactive with local councils to erect reminders around the beaches. Jump on board with this, and heed the notices! The rest of you councils, come on, catch up!

22.01.2022 Another successful rehoming, this time from a lady who was struggling to keep up with her ringneck due to her blindness. Her ringneck, Poppy, is undergoing a trial run with the flock at Thiccles the fat purple ringneck and love is in the air already

22.01.2022 An incredible look at one of the common chicken ailments. Not only chickens, but our parrots too! Warning: graphic images

20.01.2022 After nearly 7,000 views and 45 shares, I am absolutely delighted to say that nearly all of the birds have found homes. I am waiting on confirmation for the pigeons, and no offers on the roosters yet, but everyone else has a great home to go to. It's very important to me that I match the right home with the right bird, and I very much follow my gut on this. It hasn't proved me wrong so far (touch wood) and I look forward to hearing how they have settled into their new homes n...ext week. Thank you for all the messages, I am sorry I couldn't get back to everyone, and if you are still keen on adopting a featherhead then please keep checking this page. Thank you so much for your support! Edit: Looks like the roosters have a home, too!

19.01.2022 Do you like what you see? This is an introduced bird, the kookaburra, eating a native species, a swamp rat. This is what happens when you do not control introduced species.

19.01.2022 EDIT: THE GALAHS ARE NOW SPOKEN FOR Thank you for all the messages. I have a lot to get through, so please bear with me. And forgive me if I dont get back to everyone! Well it has been a hectic week. On Saturday I went to visit the collection of birds that belonged to an elderly man who was in and out of hospital and possibly dementing. It was his daughter who got in touch with me, as she could see that the birds were neglected and they deserved better.... It's a sad scenario, but not altogether uncommon. Make sure you have a plan in place for your birds, should anything happen to you! Now, the birds. We have eight cockatiels, two galahs, one long-billed corella, two sulphur-crested cockatoos, a shitload of pigeons and some chickens. The cockatiels: couldnt get close enough to visually sex. One appears to have an injury to the chest, but was perfectly capable of flying. The galahs: female is friendly and had a scratch :) the male is not, and appears to only have one wing. Probably an amputation earlier in life, but he will get checked over by the vet. The corella: not tame. Otherwise healthy The cockatoos: one has no feathers around the face, I think because the other has been picking on it. Both appear to have plenty of dust and down and look healthy so unlikely to be PBFD. The pigeons: so many :( if homes cant be found for them, euthanasia is likely. The chooks: four or so roosters, and about 8 or 9 hens. A neighbour might be taking some, but it's not confirmed. Some look like Rhode Island Reds, while the others are bantams. One bantam rooster, maybe two. All of the chickens will need a full worm and mite treatment, but the roosters will need to be dispatched this weekend if homes arent found. Good news, sort of, is that Bonorong are happy to use their bodies so they wont go to waste. If anyone is interested in providing homes for any of these, please get in touch via messenger only (no texts please, keeping everything in one spot helps me keep organised!). I'm mostly concerned about the pigeons, as they are generally hard to rehome, and I cant take them. They also cant be left alone, as you dont want a feral flock to establish. Photos below, and please no nasty comments because this is a sad situation that we are trying to fix.

19.01.2022 This is Bert. He was originally found by a caring lady about six months ago, in horrible condition. She found his original owner who didnt want him back. So she spent the next six months caring for Bert and helping him regrow some feathers. He came to me today, as she felt he was lonely and also scared of her dogs. This is what I love about people who are selfless, and think about the animals welfare rather than their own ego. Bert will stay with me for a little while, and hopefully get some more feathers, and may be put up for adoption.

19.01.2022 Yesterday I rehomed over 92 birds. 50+ pigeons, 20+ chickens, 8 cockatiels, 2 galahs, 2 sulphur-crested cockatoos and one corella. I am so pleased that everything went smoothly, and every single bird, bar 7 roosters, was successfully rehomed. The roosters that I couldnt rehome went to ZooDoo to feed their animals. Three of the hens and two cockatiels will be heading to Mayfair Vet tomorrow (hopefully) to get checked over as they aren't in good condition.... Thank you everyone for your shares, couldnt have made this happen without your support! I'll post pics up soon of everyone in their new homes. But while I'm at it, a mild PSA - make plans for your birds in the event of an emergency. Not just for bushfires, but if you were suddenly hospitalised, or if you're getting on in years, who will inherit the birds? Common sense would say not to get a cockatoo when you are in your 60s. Honestly I feel that getting Kora - my 3yo major mitchell - at the ripe old age of 35, is pushing it, because I know she will probably outlive me. Make plans! And make sure other people make plans. Write a note in your wallet for next of bird kin. Just. In. Case.

14.01.2022 *sigh* you know you have a bird problem when you have to seriously consider if you should buy a new bed made from timber or iron, because what gets chewed on less... #nothingissacred

14.01.2022 This morning when I was brushing my hair I thought, gee it feels super smooth today! Then I realised Kora had done a lovely turd in it and I was dying my hair a new shade of brown/green/white. #lifewithbirds #shithead #maybeshesbornwithit #maybeitsaparrotturd

12.01.2022 *PSA TIME* I'm sure I've talked about this before, but I really need to talk about it again, because there are a LOT of people that need an education in ecology. I really hope that what I write here will make people think. It is something I feel extremely passionate about, and I have a science/zoology degree so I am not just talking out my arse, but as someone who has had years of education in this field.... INTRODUCED BIRDS I have had a large number of phone calls and enquiries lately regarding chicks that have been found, but not accepted by wildlife rescues such as Bonorong. There's a bloody good reason they won't accept them once they are confirmed to be an introduced species. Introduced species put the lives of native birds at risk. Starlings and kookaburras (yes, kookaburras are introduced in Tasmania) are well-known nest robbers. Both species nest in tree hollows and will kick out the occupants to keep that space for themselves. Both are aggressive, and will attack and kill other birds. Yes, that's right. Starlings will throw chicks and eggs out of nest hollows, and kookaburras do the same (and eat them). Starlings are classified as invasive for this reason, and rainbow lorikeets are also invasive for their aggressive behaviour towards natives. Blackbirds, turtledoves, sparrows, goldfinches and greenfinches are also introduced, but as they make their own nests, their biggest problem is stealing resources from natives such as food and nesting material. It's for these reasons I do not and will not take on introduced birds to raise, rehabilitate and release. I have in the past. But now I just can't bring myself to spend time and resources on a creature that is ultimately going to harm, either directly or not, a native bird's chances. We already have two endangered species of parrot, the Swift and the Orange-Bellied. Why would we risk endangering the entire species? If all lives matter, why do the native birds matter less? So do the right thing. If you have a confirmed introduced species, please TAKE IT TO THE VET. Don't try to raise it yourself, as it is something that requires training and more often than not, people who aren't trained in it end up killing the bird and prolonging its suffering. As a side note, I know that humans are destructive and cause more damage. Which is precisely why we should take responsibility for our fragile ecosystem and do what we can to help it. One of the worst ways we damage our environment is releasing species that don't belong in it. If everyone decided to release a starling or a kookaburra or a rainbow lorikeet, we would have thousands of the wrong birds in our environment, and that spells disaster for our natives, It's not the bird's fault, I know. It sucks. But we HAVE to take off the blinkers and see the bigger picture. It's not about you. It's not about me. It's about our ecosystem.

11.01.2022 One of my very first rescues, Mouse, died yesterday. It's the hardest thing about doing this sort of work, but theres satisfaction in knowing she had a good life. She was only a baby when I got her, suffering French Moult and missing tail and wing feathers. She was tiny, and would scuttle along the ground looking like a white and blue mouse She recovered fully, and grew out her feathers. I suspect that her initial illness impacted on her immune system, as it often does, and... left her susceptible to other illnesses that are usually thrown off easily. French Moult, or polyoma virus, is a common disease of budgies, and has a high mortality rate in chicks. While they can recover, adults are carriers of the disease and should not be encouraged to breed.

09.01.2022 When it rains, it pours, right? Incoming aviary birds from an elderly man who cant look after them; Two galahs, two sulphur-crested cockatoos, a corella and a bunch of cockatiels. Oh, and a shitload of pigeons and doves. Also up for adoption is a handraised 8yo galah, but I will post about him separately. ... At this stage Emma from Brightside will be taking the larger birds, but if there is anyone super keen on anything please let me know via messenger only, the next few days are going to be hectic! Of course, the usual high standards of rehoming apply. Any adoptions will be subject to rigorous review!

08.01.2022 ~ ASSISTED ADOPTION ~ BANDIT 8YO MALE GALAH... Bandit is an 8yo handraised galah whose family are finding it difficult to give him the love and attention he needs. They are located in the NW but are happy to travel to the right home. Potential adoptees need to have: Experience with galahs and their attitudes Lots of time to spend, would suit someone who doesn't work full time or works from home Preferably not with kids, unless said kids are understanding of bird behaviour and can recognise when birds don't want to play. Bandit is a very affectionate, very loving boy, and comes fully loaded with galah sass. Inbox only please, and please be prepared to send photos of your set up, plus a description of your current circumstances. This is so we can find the best fit for Bandit. Quick edit: This is not a first come, first served scenario. (No birds I put up are!) And I'm going to bed, any messages will be replied to tomorrow afternoon. Also text messages will NOT be responded to.

08.01.2022 It would mean the world to me if every one could please share this. I lost my maxi yesterday and I'm so heart broken. Please share and keep an eye out. Need my little birdie back.

06.01.2022 Update 5/11 5:20pm - Fantastic news Flames has been found! Mara was out doing the afternoon search and found her in a Gumtree. She called out to her and she cam...e! We are all so relieved, thank you so much to everyone who shared this post Update 4/11 7:50pm - Unfortunately we haven't had any sightings of Flames today. Lots of wild black cockatoo's around but not the gorgeous Flames. Please keep checking your yards and surrounding trees. Update 3/11 8:28pm - Flames hasn't been seen since approximately 10:30am this morning. We've wrapped up our search for the night but please keep your eyes and ears open. Flames has a very distinctive squawk and we're hoping she is still in the area. Please keep sharing this post Update 2/11 9:42pm - Flames was last seen at a property at the back of Edith Close, Forcett. We've had to leave her again for another night. Hopefully she stays close by. Any sightings tomorrow please let us know. Update: 2/11 6:53pm - Flames has been located but we're still unable to reach her due to the height of the tree she is in. If anyone can help out with a drone or any other ideas that would be great! Please contact me on Messenger if you can help. Update: 2/1111:05am - Flames is still missing, we are still out looking for her but word of mouth and someone sighting her are looking like our only options now. If you haven't shared my post already could you please do so... thank you very much to those that have already shared. If you live in the Dodges Ferry/Lewisham/Forcett area or know someone who does please check your yards especially if you have any trees. Update: 2/11 7:30am - Flames has flown off during the night and is still missing. If anyone sees her please let me know. Flames has flown off in the Forcett Area. Please keep an eye out for her, Mara currently knows where she is but is unable to get to her as she is too high and they have lost daylight. Mara is devastated and worried she'll fly off during the night!

05.01.2022 MISSING - COCKATIEL - WEST MOONAH (GLENORCHY CC REGION) 01/08/20 STILL MISSING 15/08/20 REWDARD OFFERED - **PLEASE NOTE: TLPR is not responsible for any reward ...offered** UPDATE: We reliably learn that our bird which flew away on Saturday around 12:30 pm from West Moonah was spotted Yesterday (Sunday) in Longley Crscent, Glenorchy. It landed on a boy's shoulder, stayed until he pushed it to fly, and every description he told about the bird exactly matched that of Chirpy. Interestingly the boy's appearance also very much like our son (both South Asian heritage, same skin colour, hair, height, etc). Unfortunatly we only got to know about it today evening only. Immediately I went around that area, including Tolosa park, played sibling bird's call and waied, and dropped leaflets. I am having hopes and planning to search from early morning tomorrow. *A recent photo, *Suburb/Street Name West Moonah, Sixth avenue *Description - Chirpy is a very friendly hand raised Cockatiel and loves to sit on peoples' shoulder, head, etc. *Date 01/08/2020 *Breed, sex - Cockatiel *Last location, time/date seen/direction headed West Moonah, Flew towards South West direction *Best Contact - 0401753123 Gumtree Advert: www.gumtree.com.au%2Fs-ad%2Fwest-moonah%2Flost-found%2Flost-bird-cockatiel-reward-200- PHONE: 0401753123 FB CONTACT: https://www.facebook.com/vijayalayan https://www.facebook.com/Tasmanianlostpets/inbox/ Triple M Hobart (Toni) #TLPRbirdglenorchy 2/8BR 12/8BR

05.01.2022 Pinky was NOT impressed to have fresh gum put in HIS aviary, and having HIS old branches replaced with horrible fresh ones! So I had to distract him with a feed bag for him to take out his anger on.

04.01.2022 Two of my new budgies need a name... head on over to Thiccles the fat purple ringneck to vote!

04.01.2022 I cant remember if I posted this or not, but here is a chicken exercise wheel that I made last year. Chicken enrichment is important, too! Now, I dont mind at all if people want to have a go at making their own chook entertainment - I figure the more enriched chickens out there, the better! BUT if you decide to make money out of this, please consider this rescue and make a sizable donation, leave some land in your will or just buy Featherheads a block and we'll call it even ;)

04.01.2022 Basil is currently undergoing a trial at a new home! Seems to have settled in so far, so likely to be permanent. Thank you for all enquiries! ~ASSISTED REHOMING~ Basil the Cockatiel... Basil is a 16yo handraised cockatiel who enjoys spending his day exploring empty paper bags and boxes and playing with bright toys. His parronts have sold their house with the intention of moving to sunny QLD with him, but then the good ol' 'Rona came along and delayed those plans. Unfortunately this means his parronts are living in a caravan for a while, and they feel it is unfair on him not to have the same space to explore. Basil will need a home where he is able to spend the day outside of the cage, possibly with another cockatiel to keep him company. He prefers females and hasnt wanted to be handled a lot lately, but is happy to sit on you all day. With the right positive reinforcement I'm sure he will adapt to a new home and having scratches again.

04.01.2022 Bandit has found his forever home, just around the corner from his previous home! Thank you all for your interest

01.01.2022 This bird is currently in my care. Please get in touch if you think it might be yours.
