23.01.2022 Hi peoples please sign and share our petition to save our fishing industry and the very important generational and sustainable fisher families who built it and whose lives depend on it...

22.01.2022 Thanks Lauren Green for the article. There’s a link at the bottom of the story to learn more about the social impact campaign supporting the film and how to support the making of the film through a tax deductible donation. Please read and share some of my crazy ideas about the power of Hip hop.

22.01.2022 It’s been a while but thought I’d share that our film released over a year ago now still has a life in our schools, which I am so proud of. Making this film was about permanently documenting the great legacy of self-determination that our grandparents left us. Now young people all over Australia can learn from these amazing mentors but also engage in discussions around bullying, racism, identity, connection to country and the importance of family. The film was recently screened in my kids old school in Newcastle and the school is dedicating a whole unit to the film. If you or your school would like a copy of the film you can navigate to it here on the Ronin films website: https://www.roninfilms.com.au/fea/15771/teach-man-fish.html

21.01.2022 We are almost half way there to getting 10,000 signatures online as well as in hardcopy. Please support our petition by getting your friends and family to sign.... Thank you for helping us fight to keep our seafood locally owned and harvested and keeping hard-working families employed in an industry they've cared for generations. See more

18.01.2022 Just saw this yesterday- make sure you tune in. Apologies to my family, please excuse the typo, Nan and Pop had seven, not six, sons and three daughters.

17.01.2022 If you haven't seen it or just can't get enough, please come check out our film Teach a Man to Fish, screening under the stars during Reconciliation Week. Check flyer for more details- official event coming soon from Mid Coast Council- this is just a heads up...

16.01.2022 Thank you again NITV for giving me a platform to share my story- it means a lot to me, my family and community of Taree/ Biripi country.

16.01.2022 We need your support to get this petition read by the speaker in the next sitting of parliament. Apart from this online petition a hard copy has hit the streets of the Manning Valley and Great Lakes area. We are still very shy of our 10000 target so please sign and share to save our small fishing families and our precious resource.

16.01.2022 Please listen to one of the 100's of NSW fishermen affected by the recent fishing reforms, Sam Ragno. More testimonies to come. If you want to maintain a sustainable, healthy, fishing industry, run by experienced, generational, professional, local fishermen and not owned by foreign investors and unsustainable big fishing businesses, driven by greed, then please sign our petition to uncover the lies, fraud and deceit enacted on NSW fishermen and you, the seafood consuming public by this LNP government. https://youtu.be/RwFkAzaoUaU

15.01.2022 Uncle Al and Watto in action- thanks Lou Northam for posting

15.01.2022 Was an awesome night Friday night. The last screening of my film Teach a Man to Fish in Biripi country/ Taree/old Bar until the NITV broadcast. I feel honoured ...that I've been able to share mine and my family's personal and political history, struggles with racism but determination of a family I am extremely proud of, and who made me who I am. Big Thanks, love and respect to my wonderful family, our beautiful Biripi community and my new community of Old Bar. Thanks also to Old Bar festival for getting my little sideline business in outdoor cinema, Galactic Cinema to open up the Old Bar Beach Festival. Great night and awesome weekend! Don't forget Teach a Man to Fish is in the Byron Bay Film Festival on 20th October at 11am and is on NITV on 28th October at 8pm. See more

14.01.2022 NSW Liberal party has all but killed off the Professional Fishing Industry with only 700 fishers left, many only part time. Shooters + Fishers Party Mark B has been a strong supporter of Pro's recently tirelessly advocating for NSW Fishing families in Parliament

11.01.2022 Big Thanks to Jan Wooster and Dusty "The Printer" for donating these 3D printed versions of the JustUS Black Power salute. We are offering these limited edition trophies of our appreciation to the first 20 donations of $200 or more to our film production crowd funding campaign (on top of the other perks below). The film has been three years in the making as my doctoral creative research thesis on Indigenous Hip-hop for the University of Technology, Sydney. I really want the f...ilm to reach a larger audience than the academic space because it deals with important social justice issues in this country that we all seriously need to be engaged with AND it showcases some of the freshest Hip-hop to ever come out of this country. "Hip-hop gives voice to the voiceless. This film is about what those voices have to say about living black in Australia." However, it cannot be broadcast or distributed without paying for expensive music and film archive licensing. I also wish to employ some other clever creatives to provide further editing, animation, sound mixing, composition and everything else needed for final delivery of the film. Please find out more about the social impact campaign and how to donate here: https://documentaryaustralia.com.au//justus-what-hip-hop-/ REMEMBER THERE ARE REWARDS FOR YOUR SUPPORT APART FROM BEING TAX DEDUCTIBLE $20= Free ticket plus thank you credit $50 = Free ticket and T-shirt plus thank you credit $100 = 2 free tickets and 2 T-shirts plus thank you credit $200 = 3 free tickets and 3 T-shirts plus thank you credit $500 = 4 free tickets and 4 T-shirts plus thank you credit $1000 = 5 free tickets and 5 T-shirts plus special thank you credit For corporates and NGO's: $5000 = 10 Free tickets to film's Premiere PLUS 10 T-shirts PLUS special thank you credit PLUS business logo $10000 = 20 free tickets to Premiere PLUS 20 T-shirts PLUS special thank you credit PLUS bigger business logo $20000 = 30 free tickets to Premiere PLUS 30 T-shirts PLUS special thank you credit PLUS whole frame business logo $30000 = 40 Free tickets to Premiere PLUS 40 T-shirts PLUS "Executive Producer" credit PLUS whole frame business logo Thanks again for all the 44 supporters who have contributed so far to the cause. 08.01.2022 Another chance to see Teach a Man to Fish on the big screen and with an audience crying and laughing and admiring our beautiful Biripi country. Dad and I will be there for a Q&A afterwards as well. See you there...

07.01.2022 Hey peeps happy new year! Been a while but news just in- our film Teach a Man to Fish will be appearing at next weekend's Grow Your Own Festival in Tuncurry on Saturday 12th January at 3:05PM at Harry Elliot Oval. It's a bit of an experiment, with our film being the first to screen at this predominantly music and growers festival but hey why not! It will appear in a pop-up undercover cinema and there will be a Q&A with my father and I. Hope to see you there!

05.01.2022 Check out Teach a Man to Fish part 2: "Something smells fishy", to learn more about the shady politics that have got in the way of honest people trying to make ...a living, including my father and 1000's of generational fishermen across Australia. Please sign and share the petition https://www.change.org/p/save-our-fishing-industry-and-the- See more

05.01.2022 The quota system is so unworkable and goes against the so called intentions of governments to sustain fish stocks. If a fisherman catches more fish than his quota allows, he has to tip those fish overboard or cop a huge fine- most fish , if not all, will not survive. Therefore good eatable fish go to waste. Wealthier fishermen/businessmen don’t need to worry because they have enough quota to catch enough to sustain their livelihoods. This whole system is set up to penalise and eventually ruin small fishing businesses under the guise of protecting fish stocks. If that truly were the case they would cap the quota on all fishermen so that all fishermen were equal.

03.01.2022 Check out some grabs from last night's DPI forum in Wingham and hear what fishermen have to say about their industry and how Niall Blair has screwed them...

02.01.2022 For immediate release: Cinema Under the Stars for Reconciliation Week This National Reconciliation Week, MidCoast Council is proud to be hosting a series of Cinema Under the Stars events showcasing the brilliant film ‘Teach a Man to Fish’.... Written and directed by local filmmaker Grant Leigh Saunders, Teach a Man to Fish is an autobiographical piece about Grant’s life, focusing on the importance of family and how his culture and ties to his country called him home. Grant is a member of the Saunders family, his father Ray a prominent local Biripi man and renowned fisherman, and the film is a beautiful representation of their family history, the local fishing industry, politics, and connection to country. Having been a finalist in the Australian Documentary Prize at the Sydney Film Festival in 2018, Teach a Man to Fish is a must-see for locals and MidCoast Council’s team is honoured to be able to show it as part of their Reconciliation Week activities. National Reconciliation Week is the perfect platform to share Grant’s incredible film again and really highlight different aspects of Aboriginal culture, particularly on a local level, said Melissa Garton, Council’s Manager of Community Services. It’s a great opportunity to bring the community together to acknowledge the past and our progress to date, and will hopefully spark conversations about the meaning of Reconciliation Week and the part we all play. The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2019 is ‘Grounded in Truth: Walk Together with Courage’, and Reconciliation Australia’s Chief Executive Officer, Karen Mundine, said that it’s ultimately about relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians and the need for it to be grounded in truth. Teach a Man to Fish had the MidCoast talking in 2018 when it was shown at the Manning Entertainment Centre and will no doubt reignite interest and understanding of Aboriginal culture across the region following the three showings this month. Reconciliation Week Cinema Under the Stars events are being held from 5:30pm at Fotheringham Park Taree on Wednesday 29 May, Billabong Park Gloucester on Thursday 30 May and John Wright Park Tuncurry on Friday 31 May. These are family friendly, alcohol free events and everyone attending is encouraged to bring a chair, picnic blanket and rug along. These will be great events for the whole community. MidCoast Council has a long history of taking part in National Reconciliation Week and we really value its purpose towards strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples, added Melissa. There is no need to book or RSVP, simply turn up and find your spot under the stars. In the instance of wet weather, check Council’s Facebook Page for an alternative venue. Media enquiries or for more information visit our website at www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au or call us on 02 6591 7222

02.01.2022 Thank you everyone for all the birthday wishes. Apart from getting an awesome new hoodie from my kids, I also got a pretty special gift from the Documentary Australia Foundation (DAF). My latest film project, a Hip-hop/social justice film, Break it Down Under, just got approved by DAF for philanthropic support as well as through crowd funding donations- family cannot donate but facebook friends can. yay! If you want to give me a present then please donate, like and share. I ...will be applying through the typical film finance channels but they never fund the total budget required to make the film and having market investments will definitely help make the film and prove that the film is worthy of an audience and have real social impact. If you also know of social justice advocacy, educational and legal professional groups interested in Indigenous social justice and education, then please send them to the below link where they can provide philanthropic support:
